The restaurant’s menu is a delightful blend of Mediterranean and Italian cuisine. I enjoyed the fresh seafood, sourced daily from local fishermen.
The pasta dishes, crafted by Chef Sergio Martelli, had an authentic Italian flavour with a nod to sophistication. The use of organic vegetables and herbs from their garden was also noticeable.

5: Baan Ya Jai
Baan Ya Jai is a hidden gem in Koh Samui. It might not appear as glamorous and ‘romantic’ as some of the other venues I’ve mentioned, but believe me when I say it’s worth venturing inside for the food.
This restaurant boasts the culinary expertise of Chef Atitaya Paitoon, who built on her career, skillset and reputation in a top-ranking Thai restaurant, before deciding to create her own magic in her own now equally reputable restaurant.
Whist the premises are ‘unfussy’, the menu at Baan Ya Jai is tightly curated. Every single dish offers high-quality, tantalisingly good food with no room or reason for bad reviews.
They also offer vegetarian options, which is a plus for those with dietary preferences.
Each dish showcased a perfect balance of flavours. The limited menu ensures that each item is prepared with great care and consistency.

The menu featured a delightful range of French cuisine. I particularly enjoyed the duck confit, which was cooked to perfection with a crispy skin and tender meat.
The escargots were also delectible, offering a true taste of classic French flavours.
Each dish showed attention to detail and quality ingredients.
On top of all this, The Boudoir’s service was exceptional, and made me feel very welcome from the moment I walked in.

The unique twists they put on traditional meals are impressive – you can’t help but want to snap a photo of these edible masterpieces.
The staff were also on cue with taking orders, helping you choose, and generally making sure you have a wonderful meal in their company.
It’s not all about the food and decor here, either. Their incredible cocktail bar offers an extensive range of creative cocktails that complement the food perfectly, adding an extra layer of enjoyment and luxury to the whole experience.

10: Mekong Fusion Restaurant & Lounge
Mekong Fusion Restaurant & Lounge in Koh Samui is tucked away in a serene garden setting, offering a peaceful atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle.
I found it a welcoming escape, a santuary-like atmosphere with bamboo decor and lush surroundings that help you relax and unwind in comfort.
The food, however, is not so laid back. The menu is surprisingly diverse, featuring an enticing mix of Vietnamese, Thai, Burmese, and European dishes.
After much deliberation with so much to choose from, I went with the Vietnamese Pho, which was rich in flavour and tasted authentic.
Mekong Fusion certainly do themselves proud with their combination of fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, especially in such a welcoming lounge setting. It even has a well-stocked cocktail bar to add a creative tipple to your time here.

Traditional Thai Cuisine
When visiting Koh Samui, the traditional Thai cuisine is something you cannot miss.
The island offers a variety of unique and flavourful dishes that reflect Thailand’s rich culinary heritage, blending local ingredients and diverse influences.
Signature Dishes
One of the standout dishes you must try is Tom Yum Goong, a hot and sour shrimp soup. It’s famous for its bold flavours from ingredients like lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and galangal.
A bowl of Tom Yum is a perfect blend of spicy, sour, and savoury tastes.
Another dish I highly recommend is Som Tum, or green papaya salad.
This refreshing dish combines green papaya, tomatoes, peanuts, and chillies, all tossed in a tangy lime dressing, and is a great introduction to the complex flavours of Thai cuisine.
Pad Thai, often found in eateries all over Koh Samui, represents the perfect harmony of sweet, sour, salty, and umami. Served with stir-fried rice noodles, shrimp, tofu, and bean sprouts, it’s usually garnished with peanuts and lime wedges.
For an authentic experience, try it at local spots like Coco Tam’s Beach Bar.
Influences and Ingredients
Thai cuisine’s unique flavours come from a mix of local and international influences. Here are some ingredients you’ll come across in many dishes, and what they bring to the table…
Coconut milk adds a rich and creamy texture, while Thai basil provides a sweet and aromatic note.
The use of fresh herbs like cilantro and mint in dishes like Larb (spicy meat salad) highlights the fresh and vibrant profile of Thai cooking.
Fish sauce is also a key ingredient, offering a salty and umami taste that enhances many recipes.
Influences from Chinese, Indian, and Malaysian cuisines can also be found, such as stir-fries and noodles, and spices like turmeric and cumin. The result is a culinary scene that is both diverse and deeply rooted in tradition.
Dining with a View
Koh Samui offers numerous dining experiences with stunning views. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a meal by the beach or from a hilltop overlooking the island, here are some of the best spots for both.
Beachfront Restaurants
Dining at Koh Samui’s beachfront restaurants is a treat. One of my favourites is the Nikki Beach Club, where you can savour delicious seafood while watching the sunset. The elegant atmosphere, combined with the sound of waves, makes it an unforgettable experience.
Another excellent spot is the Baitong Restaurant. Their Thai dishes, such as the spicy papaya salad and fresh fish curry, are extraordinary.
Located right on the sands of Chaweng Beach, the views are breathtaking, especially in the evening.
Lastly, Fisherman’s Village is home to the charming Coco Tam’s. This spot has bean bags on the beach, allowing you to relax with a cocktail in hand. The pizzas and seafood platters are particularly delicious.
Hilltop Venues
Koh Samui’s hilltop venues offer panoramic views of the island. The Jungle Club is an amazing spot high in the hills.
Here, you can enjoy a mixed menu of Thai and international dishes while taking in the wide vistas. Their Pad Thai and burgers are highly recommended.
Equally impressive is the Sky Bar, set atop one of the island’s highest points. The 360-degree views are perfect for a romantic dinner, and their grilled seafood and extensive cocktail menu add to the charm.
Lastly, the Dining on the Rocks at Six Senses Samui provides a unique experience. Each of its ten terraced decks offers a different perspective of the ocean.
The fusion menu, featuring dishes like seared scallops and beef tenderloins, is a culinary delight with an equally stunning backdrop.
Cultural Dining Experiences
During my visit to Koh Samui, I found that the island offers rich cultural dining experiences. These dining adventures not only let you savour authentic Thai dishes, but also immerse you in traditional Thai culture through dinner shows and cooking classes.
Thai Dinner Shows
Thai dinner shows are a wonderful way to combine a meal with entertainment. These shows often feature traditional Thai dance, music, and sometimes even martial arts displays.
One popular spot to experience this is the Nora Buri Resort & Spa.
Here, you can enjoy a buffet of classic Thai dishes such as Tom Yum Goong and Pad Thai while watching a captivating show. The performers wear intricate costumes and enact classical stories – it really is quite a spectacle.
Another favourite is Santiburi Samui, which offers an excellent Khao Soi (curry noodle soup) alongside cultural performances.
Booking ahead is recommended for these popular events.
Cooking Classes
Like what you’re tasting and want to bring some culinary skills back with you as a souvenir? Cooking classes are an excellent way to learn more about Thai cuisine for both dining and cooking perspectives.
Many of these classes start with a visit to a local market, where you can learn about fresh ingredients, Thai herbs and spices.
I took a class at Smiley Cook, where the instructors guided us through making Green Curry and Som Tum. It was fascinating to learn the techniques behind these iconic dishes.
Another great option is the Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts. They offer both short and long classes and cover a wide range of recipes, from appetisers to desserts.
These cooking classes not only teach you how to cook Thai food, but also give you insights into Thai culinary traditions and culture. Plus, enjoying the fruits of your labour in a beautiful setting is a delightful bonus, and helps you relive those memories through food when you return back home.
