Finding the best hotels in Rome can really shape your whole experience in this timeless city. Italy’s capital can be overwhelming, with so many iconic landmarks, ancient ruins, architecture, and beauty.
Having visited Rome a few times over the last 5 years I’ve stayed in my fair share of great hotels, and some less pleasant experiences. To help you get the most out of your trip, here’s my honest guide to the top hotels the city has to offer.
Our Favourite Places To Stay In Rome
Palazzo Manfredi – a grand 17th century building with a very central location. The view from the bar and some of the rooms of the Colosseum is unreal.
Rome Cavalieri – 5 star luxury with jaw dropping views. The complex includes 4 swimming pools and views over Rome from the rooftop.
Hotel Albergo del Senato – a more budget friendly hotel that has views of the Pantheon from the roof top terrace.
1: Hotel Artemide

The Hotel Artemide sits right on Via Nazionale, so within minutes you can walk to many of the city’s famous ancient sites and lively piazzas. The Colosseum is just 10 minutes’ walk away.
After long days exploring, it felt so good to come back and relax here. The staff really paid attention to detail – they were absolutely brilliant and genuinely helpful.
I dined at the Ambrosia Rooftop Restaurant which was wonderful – very creative Italian dishes and a view over Rome. The rooftop was closed for renovations part of the time, but I still enjoyed meals and drinks in the ground-floor lounge and can’t wait to see how they could’ve possibly improved what was already there. I believe this renovation is now complete (they finished in April 2025) so you shouldn’t have any problems.
The buffet breakfast is an absolute must. I’d definitely stay here again.

2: Palazzo Manfredi

So clearly, one of the standout features for the Palazzo Manfredi is its magnificent view of the Colosseum. It’s absolutely breathtaking, especially from the bar in the evenings. It really is in one of the best locations for close proximity and views.
The hotel itself is a grand seventeenth-century building. The interior is modern laced with classic, stylish with comfort, and some classic art too.
My suite had elegant wallpaper, oak floors, and a bathroom with beautiful marble. I had a view of the colosseum which felt unreal to wake up to.
The hotel’s restaurant offers fine dining, and I get why people recommend it for both quality and setting. Service was attentive without being overbearing.
The breakfast is really good. I’d definitely say that a sunset drink at the bar was my favourite part.
Everything from the welcome at reception to the thoughtful details in the room made my stay feel special. The staff here were brilliant.

3: The St. Regis Rome

The St. Regis Rome is an incredible establishment. I loved staying here. From wall to wall and ceiling to floor the detail and décor is amazing. It’s certainly a luxury hotel.
The location is within easy each of everything you’d want to see in Rome, but in a quieter area where I felt like I was escaping to my own exclusive stay.
While most of the communal spaces are rich in colour, the rooms are airy and light, spacious, immaculate, and very comfy.
The restaurant has a Mediterranean menu, prepared and presented to a very high standard. I got to enjoy afternoon tea here too, which was very good. Staff here were first class. Very helpful and friendly, professional and kind.
Though do have a spa here, and although I didn’t get to try it myself, the treatments looked good.

4: Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel

Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel – or Cavalieri, as it’s more commonly called – as a 5-star experience at the very least. When I walked in it was evening time and the place glittered with luxury. It looks richly decorated from top to bottom, and it’s immaculate.
The views are also jaw-dropping here. Especially when the sun sets over Rome and lights start to twinkle, it really does pay to stay here for the night.
The rooms are spacious, clean, and well-furnished. I could see the city from my window, which was delightful to wake up to. The hotel grounds are surprisingly large for Rome, too.
Those grounds include three outdoor swimming pools, and an indoor pool – so if you’ve had enough of sightseeing, you can enjoy some time at the hotel. On top of this, the Cavalieri has a high-end spa. You do have to pay $50 for a day pass, but it’s worth it if you have time – it’s an experience in itself.
Dining options include two full-service restaurants, which are fine dining and worth the reservation.
I adored my stay here and the service and professionalism of the individuals was second to none.

5: Hotel Albergo del Senato

If you want a hotel that’s a little more budget-friendly, I cannot recommend the Albergo del Senato highly enough. It’s somehow officially a 3-star, but for what you get for it I’d give it 10 out of 10.
Firstly, its location puts you right in the centre of Rome, beside the Pantheon. The building stands out with its heritage design from the 19th century, and is an absolute delight for convenience and beauty.
The hotel has so much character, and I felt very well looked after during my stay here. It’s clearly been well maintained, and and felt clean and safe the whole time.
Everything in my room was modern and comfortable – it had good air conditioning and strong WiFi, and the room was surprisingly quiet. I also appreciated the small touches like a mini-bar and satellite TV.
From the hotel, I could reach Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain in just a few minutes on foot. The Spanish Steps were close too. Being able to explore Rome’s top sites without needing public transport is a real bonus, especially if you’re on a short duration.
Having breakfast on the rooftop terrace and looking out over the city rooftops was also simply wonderful.

6: Room Mate Collection Mia, Rome Colosseum

This hotel has recently been renovated (previously known as Capo d’Africa). The location was already perfect – just a 2-minute walk to the Colosseum and Roman Forum, and right in the heart of Rome. Since its refresh, it’s now beautifully presented in a stylish, elegant design. The best spot at this hotel has to be the large rooftop terrace. It’s stunning here in the evening, and equally as breathtaking in the morning over breakfast (which was superb).
The hotel is modern all around, and made luxurious with more simplistic décor and furnishings. My room was spacious and bright, and absolutely spotless. I had a very comfy night’s sleep here and enjoyed being in the room (which not hotel rooms achieve, as we all know).
The atmosphere in the hotel was very relaxed and ‘chilled’ – except the staff, who were absolutely amazing and very attentive. The Centrum Bar is a nice quiet spot – I sat here for a while to wind down from the day’s events before heading to my room.
You’ve got everything here: calm setting, beautiful scenes, authentic local flavours at the restaurant, comfort, even quick Wi-Fi, and close proximity to top spots. This hotel has a great mix of practicality and charm.

7: DoubleTree by Hilton Rome Monti

I loved my stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Rome Monti. It depends on what you like, but sometimes after a day of sightseeing you just want to slip back to somewhere comforting. Don’t get me wrong, this hotel is still high-end and modern – but they’ve designed it in a way that makes you feel relaxed and refreshed.
A clean hotel means a lot to me, and this hotel was immaculate. Lots of soft furnishings around, which I loved – and everything has been well maintained and cared for.
Again, there’s a great terrace here which has some photo-worthy views. And you’re right in the city, which is what we want after a day of sightseeing.
The cocktail bar in the evening was very good, with top service. In fact the staff again were very professional here across the board.
I must mention the fitness room. This kind of amenity isn’t always on the top of my agenda, but their fitness facilities are better than other hotels, so if you’re keen to maintain your regime this is a good spot.
Dining here is good, especially the breakfast – but I should probably mention too that when you’re in a good location like this one, you also have some fantastic restaurants right on your doorstep. Oh, one extra bonus here: the hotel has a coffee shop. A perfectly convenient pitstop to start every morning (or at the end of your day!).

8: The Westin Excelsior, Rome

The Westin Excelsior sits on the famous Via Vittorio Veneto, and stands out with its grand, classic architecture and stunning lobby. It’s a beautiful building on the corner that looks like a famous landscape of its own.
The magnificent chandeliers caught my eye when I first walked inside – chandeliers that large are a good sign you’re with a luxury host.
The location of this hotel is excellent – it’s near the Borghese Gardens and the Spanish Steps, and walking distance to many of Rome’s hotspots.
The building is older than some other hotels, so I was expecting it to feel and look a little more worn – but everything in here was traditionally beautiful, and very clean. The rooms are huge and look like something from a fairytale. It feels a little as though you’re in a grand castle, with modern amenities.
It has a spa, though I didn’t have time to try it myself unfortunately. I did however manage to book in for their restaurant, which served gorgeous food with excellent service. The piano bar is worth stopping by for a drink.
Staff are fabulous here. Everything at the Westin felt calm and refined. If you love vintage grandeur, this is a good pick in a gorgeous location.

9: Boutique Hotel Campo de’ Fiori

The Hotel Campo de’ Fiori is right in the heart of Rome’s historic centre. From the outside it doesn’t look much, with lots of hustle and bustle outside. But when I stepped inside it felt full of charm and pretty details, it was a lovely surprise.
The beauty of being located right in the middle of the action comes to life when you head to the rooftop terrace. It’s absolutely gorgeous. I was surprised how quiet and relaxed it was from there, and also other rooms in the hotel. It really is a delightful and indeed boutique place.
My room was rather quiet and spotless. It had a comfortable bed, fast Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a minibar.
Here, you’re just a short walk from Campo de’ Fiori square, and also close to other famous sights like Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. In the evenings I opted to try all the local restaurants, as there are so many around. Although I did stay for breakfast, which was great. (There’s also a grocery store next door, which was surprisingly handy.)
The staff made everything easy. They spoke English and were happy to help book tickets or recommend places to eat. I always felt welcome and looked after.

10: Six Senses Rome

The Six Senses Rome is an exceptionally gorgeous place to stay – the building itself is beautiful, and has been decorated by someone who really knows their interior design.
The lobby is bright, and the design mixes Italian luxury with comfortable furnishings. Staff greeted me warmly and seemed eager to help with everything, from recommendations to transport.
My room was spotless and comfortable – some would say it’s on the small side but everything about it was carefully considered and accommodating. I had a view of the city, and the bed was soft and the bathroom felt spacious, which isn’t always a given in city hotels.
And this really is a city hotel, in a fantastic location close by the everything Rome offers, with plenty of cafés and shops just steps away. Six Senses Rome strikes a nice balance between quiet relaxation and city convenience.
The spa is sensational here, too. Much better than many other hotels I’ve stayed at, and definitely worth visiting if you have time. The Roman baths are free for all guests.

Summary
Finding a hotel in Rome means balancing comfort, location, and value. I think I’ve managed to put together a range of options here, from historic buildings, charming boutique hotels, fairytale-like castles, to modern hideaways.
Staying in the city centre – especially around the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, or Piazza Navona – makes a trip to Rome so much easier, with more time to do all the things you wanted. All these hotels have wonderful staff, and I asked all of them questions about the area to test how helpful they were. All of them were so friendly and helpful, that if you are a little further out, you’ll have no trouble finding what you’re looking for.
Booking well in advance is a good idea if you want better prices in Rome. High season usually runs from April to October, and Christmas to New Year is also busy. Rates in August can drop slightly because locals leave the city for holidays, but the weather is very hot. I try to book three to six months out for peak travel dates.
For less popular months like November or January, extra flexibility gives you a better chance at last-minute deals.
Whenever you go, if you’ve got one of the best hotels in Rome waiting for you, you’ll have an incredible time.
