The south is warm, sunny, and built for tourism, think sun loungers, all-inclusives, and cocktails by 11am. The north is greener, a bit windier, and honestly feels like a completely different island. The interior? That’s for the hikers, the slow travellers, the people who’d rather stay in a finca than a five-star.

It’s one of the easiest warm-weather escapes going, especially in winter. But with so many areas to consider, picking where to base yourself can feel overwhelming. So here’s a proper breakdown.

The Best Areas and How to Choose

Las Palmas (North)

Las Palmas is the island’s capital and it’s got a city energy to it. You can spend the morning strolling along Playa de las Canteras, a long, gorgeous urban beach that somehow manages to feel relaxed despite being right in the middle of a city. Then spend the rest of the day pottering around the Vegueta old town eating tapas at places that have no English menus whatsoever (always a good sign).

It is windier up north, worth knowing if you’re going in winter. But for food, culture, and that authentic Spanish feel, Las Palmas is perfect. It’s particularly good if you’re travelling solo or as a couple who’d rather explore than just lounge.

Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés (South)

This is where most tourists end up and there’s a reason for that. The dunes at Maspalomas are stunning. You walk out into them and it feels like you’ve accidentally stumbled into the Sahara.

The area is well set up for families, with lots of all-inclusive resorts and water parks nearby. It’s also one of Europe’s most welcoming LGBTQ+ destinations. Playa del Inglés next door gets livelier at night, the Yumbo Centre is the hub for nightlife if that’s your thing, though you can very easily avoid it if it’s not. Peak season (Christmas through February) does get packed. Around 3 million tourists visit the Canaries during winter months, so book early if you’re planning on going then.

Puerto de Mogán (Southwest)

This one’s sometimes called “Little Venice” because of its small canals and flower-draped bridges. It’s a bit of an exaggeration but also… not entirely wrong. It’s genuinely pretty. Small, upmarket, and very much built around its marina. You can sit at a harbour side restaurant watching boats drift past while eating the grilled fish with a glass of wine.

It’s more expensive than the rest of the south, and the beach is nice but not enormous. But if you want somewhere that feels a bit more refined and less resort-heavy, Mogán is worth spending a bit extra.

Puerto Rico (South)

Good value, family-friendly, and with a beach that’s almost always sheltered from wind. Puerto Rico is a reliable choice that doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves. The bay is calm and perfect for kids. There are boat trips out for dolphin watching (we spotted a pod on our last outing, absolute highlight). It’s hilly though, which means a lot of steps and steep streets, something to bear in mind if mobility is a consideration.

Meloneras (South)

Meloneras sits just next to the dunes and has a lovely promenade lined with upscale restaurants, boutique shops, and some of the island’s finest hotels. It’s noticeably quieter than Maspalomas and draws a slightly older, more relaxed crowd. Ocean sunsets from the promenade are gorgeous and worth a walk even if you’re not staying there. If you’re after spa days and long lunches without the buzz of a resort centre, this is your spot. Just budget accordingly.

San Agustín (Southeast)

Sandwiched between Playa del Inglés and Meloneras, San Agustín is a solid middle ground. The beach has darker sand, almost black in places, which some people love and others find odd. It’s peaceful here, less dominated by large resort complexes, and the spa hotels along the seafront do a roaring trade for good reason. Good value compared to Meloneras, without feeling budget.

Rural and Interior (Tejeda, Arucas, Agaete)

Not for everyone, but absolutely worth knowing about. The interior of Gran Canaria, particularly around Tejeda and the Roque Nublo area, is dramatically beautiful. Volcanic rock formations, pine forests, tiny villages where people stare (in a friendly way) when outsiders turn up, we had someone come up to us and shake our hand in Santa Brigida. Small fincas and rural guesthouses here are brilliant for anyone wanting to hike and genuinely disconnect. You’ll need a hire car though; public transport out here is not the best.

Hotels Worth Knowing About

There are hundreds of places to stay across Gran Canaria, so here are some that consistently come up for the right reasons.

Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa – Meloneras. One of the island’s flagship properties. Huge, well-run, with multiple pools and direct access to that promenade. The thalassotherapy spa is impressive. Its a bit of a splurge but the facilities justify it for a longer stay.

Paradisus Gran Canaria by Meliá – Maspalomas. All-inclusive done well. The kind of place where you can spend an entire week without feeling like you’re missing anything. Great for families or couples who want everything sorted.

Marina Suites – Puerto Rico. Apartment-style suites with stunning sea views and a rooftop pool. More independent than a resort; better suited to those who want to self-cater or explore rather than be waited on constantly.

Radisson Blu Resort Gran Canaria – Playa del Inglés. Solid mid-to-upmarket option. Modern rooms, good pools, and well positioned for getting around the south.

Grupotel Orquídea – Playa del Inglés. If budget matters, this one ticks the boxes. It’s clean, friendly, family-run feel and has great pools.

Servatur Waikiki – Playa del Inglés. Another good budget-to-mid option. A favourite with families because of the pool area and the location, easy walking distance to the beach and the shopping centres.

Casa Cueva Bandama (where we stayed when we recently visited Gran Canaria) is a renovated cave dwelling near Santa Brígida. It’s only about 14 miles from the airport and tucked into the volcanic landscape near the Bandama Crater.

It’s not as crazy as it sounds, at first we didn’t even realise it was a cave house. It has two bedrooms, a jacuzzi, a pool-bar setup, a BBQ terrace, and amazing views. We loved relaxing outside with a glass of cava in the hot tub and the views were simply amazing!

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

Gran Canaria’s year-round mild climate is one of its best features — temperatures rarely dip below 18°C even in winter, which is why it’s such a popular escape from January through March. The south stays warmer and drier; if you’re going for guaranteed sunshine, base yourself down there.

Hire a car. I know I’ve said it already but it bears repeating. The south is walkable if you stay in one spot, but the moment you want to explore the interior or pop up to Las Palmas for a day, you’ll want wheels.

All-inclusives work well here if your priority is relaxation. But if you want to actually eat local food and see the island beyond the resort gates, a self-catering apartment or boutique hotel gives you more freedom — and often works out cheaper for longer stays.

Pack a layer for evenings, especially if you’re going to the north or staying into October or November. And try the local Canarian wine if you get the chance — underrated, genuinely good, and cheap by UK standards.

So, Where Should You Actually Stay?

It really does depend on what kind of trip you’re after. Families and sun-seekers tend to do best in Maspalomas or Puerto Rico. Couples wanting somewhere quieter and more upmarket will love Meloneras or Mogán. Culture hunters and city types should look at Las Palmas. And if you want something genuinely memorable rather than just a nice hotel — book the cave house.

Gran Canaria is one of those rare places that manages to be both easy and interesting at the same time. Pristine Beaches for Family Fun

Cala Galdana: The Family Beach Paradise

There’s something utterly magical about Cala Galdana – one of the best beaches in Menorca. I stood there last summer watching my kids splash in those shallow, impossibly blue waters and thought, “This is what holiday brochures promise but rarely deliver.”

The beach is shaped like a perfect horseshoe with fine golden sand that doesn’t burn your feet. It’s backed by pine trees offering natural shade, which is an absolute godsend when you’ve forgotten sun hats (guilty as charged). What makes it properly family-friendly are the amenities – clean toilets, beach bars that don’t charge the earth, and those colourful pedalos that my kids literally begged to ride every single day.

I must admit, the parking situation can be a nightmare if you arrive after 10am in high season. We learned this lesson the hard way and spent 40 minutes circling like vultures.

Get there early, seriously. But once you’re set up, it’s absolute heaven for toddlers – the water stays shallow for ages, and there’s enough space that you’re not elbow-to-elbow with other families. It’s without a doubt one of the best beaches on the island.

Son Bou: The Endless Beach

Son Bou is massive. And I mean massive – nearly 3km of beach that seems to stretch forever. Once my eldest went running ahead and became this tiny dot in the distance, giving me a minor heart attack before she came racing back.

What makes Son Bou brilliant for families is the space. Even in August, we found a spot that wasn’t crowded. The kids discovered a little playground right on the beach, and my history-mad 10-year-old was surprisingly excited about the ancient ruins nearby.

The free parking is a mega bonus (though it fills up quickly), and I love how the beach gently shelves into the sea – perfect for nervous swimmers. There’s a paleo-Christian basilica just a short walk away that makes for a quick history lesson when the kids need a break from swimming. My daughter rolled her eyes initially but was actually quite interested in the end.

Santo Tomás: The Quiet Retreat

If you’ve had enough of beach crowds (and let’s be honest, with kids, sometimes you just need somewhere quieter), Santo Tomás is your answer. We stumbled upon it almost by accident after a wrong turn, and it became our go-to quiet spot.

The beach has this laid-back, unhurried feel. There’s a small playground that kept my youngest entertained when she’d had enough of the sea, and the pedalo rentals were actually cheaper than at the more famous beaches.

What I love about Santo Tomás is that it feels like you’re in on a secret. Not totally deserted, but just busy enough to feel like you’ve made a smart choice. Perfect for a low-key beach day when you all need to recharge.

Cala’n Bosch & Hidden Coves

Cala’n Bosch isn’t just a beach – it’s a whole marina complex that’s surprisingly great with kids. We here when our first daughter was almost 1. If you have a buggy with you, it’s easy here (except the one we hired was so small we did hurt our backs having to crouch). The marina comes alive at night with restaurants and ice cream stops that had my kids literally jumping with excitement.

For older kids (or if you’re braver than me), the hidden coves like Cala Mitjana and Macarelleta are worth the effort. The hike to Macarelleta nearly broke me in the heat, but my kids still talk about that beach as the highlight of their holiday. That first glimpse of the turquoise water between the pine trees – my goodness, it’s like something from a film.

My top tip? Book one of those boat taxis to Macarelleta instead of hiking if you’ve got little ones. Worth every euro for the sea views alone, and you’ll arrive fresh rather than sweaty and irritated (not that I’m speaking from experience or anything).

Water Adventures for All Ages

Kayaking in Fornells Bay

Kayaking in Fornells with kids sounds terrifying, right? Trust me, it’s not. The bay is so sheltered it’s like paddling on a mill pond. We rented double kayaks so each kid could pair with an adult, which turned out to be a genius move.

I was very nervous before we set off (visions of capsizing with screaming children), but it was surprisingly easy. The water’s so clear you can see straight to the bottom, and my youngest spotted a starfish that had her chattering all day.

Book one of the guided tours that includes snorkeling stops – they provide all the gear, and the guides are brilliant with kids. Our guide Miguel knew exactly where to find octopuses hiding under rocks, which absolutely made the trip.

Boat Trips: Skipper for a Day

Renting a small boat was the single best thing we did in Menorca. For about €115, we had a little 5HP boat for 4 hours – no license needed and dead easy to drive. The guy at the rental place gave us a 5-minute lesson, and off we went.

We puttered along the coastline from Mahón, stopping at tiny beaches you can only reach by boat. The kids took turns “driving” (under very close supervision, obviously), and we brought a picnic to have on a deserted cove. It felt like a proper adventure, and the sunset cruise back to the harbour was magical.

Snorkeling & Sea Scooters

The north coast has some incredible snorkeling spots. Binimel·la became our favourite after I chatted with a local who tipped us off. The water visibility is ridiculous – my daughter counted seven different fish species in about five minutes.

Those sea scooters were a game-changer, especially for anyone in the family who isn’t the strongest swimmer. They pull you along underwater so you can cover more ground with less effort. My kids were absolutely buzzing after using them, spotting octopuses and even a small stingray.

For absolute beginners, Es Grau’s shallow, sheltered waters are perfect. We spent an entire morning there just floating face-down in the water, completely mesmerized by tiny fish darting between our fingers.

On our most recent trip to Punta Prima we chartered a private boat for a 6 hour day trip at a cost of around £600. But for that we had food, as much Cava and soft drinks as we could manage and the freedom to visit any of the cala’s we wanted and use the snorkels and paddle boards was something the kids and adults loved.

Waterparks: Splash Days

Splash Sur in Punta Prima is a teenagers’ happy place – big enough to be exciting but small enough that I won’t constantly panick about losing them. My teen must have gone down the Kamikaze slide about 40 times and my 8 year old (at the time) was even more of a thrill seeker!

For the younger ones, Aqua Center in Los Delfines worked better – more manageable slides and a splash zone that I’d imagine most kids will, I’m afraid, refused to leave. Quick tip: bring goggles for the saltwater slides unless you enjoy the unique sensation of eyeballs on fire.

Cultural Experiences for Curious Minds

Naveta des Tudons: Touch Ancient History

I dragged my reluctant children to this prehistoric tomb, fully expecting complaints. Instead, they were fascinated by its bizarre boat shape and the fact that it’s over 3,000 years old. Wait for your child to say something along the lines of, “People from the BRONZE AGE touched these stones!” with true wonder in their voice.

It’s dead easy to visit by car, and you can be in and out in 30 minutes if attention spans are waning. We paired it with a beach stop afterwards as a bribe, but it turned out we didn’t need one.

Fortaleza de la Mola: Fortress Adventures

This fortress saved our holiday during an unexpected rainy day. The kids went absolutely wild for the underground tunnels and machine gun rooms. The coastal views are stunning when the weather clears, and there’s enough space for them to run around without bothering other visitors.

Wear proper shoes though – I foolishly wore flip-flops and regretted it after two hours of walking on uneven surfaces. My child talks about the “secret passages” and pretends our garden shed is Fortaleza de la Mola when we’re back home.

Ciutadella Old Town: Cobblestone Charm

Ciutadella’s old town feels like stepping into a storybook. Those narrow cobblestone streets leading down to the harbour create a real magical atmosphere. We spent an evening just wandering, finding hidden squares and stopping for ice cream by the water.

The cathedral is worth popping into – it’s cool inside which provides blessed relief from the heat. And for dinner, we found this amazing place called C’an RAFA where the kids actually ate everything on their plates (yes, it’s true – miracles can happen).

Don’t leave without buying a pair of traditional Menorcan sandals (avarcas) – I still love wearing mine!

Festes de Sant Joan: Horses and Mayhem

If you’re lucky enough to visit during the Sant Joan festival in June, you’re in for a proper treat. We accidentally timed our trip with it once, and it was wild in the best possible way – horses prancing through crowded streets, traditional music, and a party atmosphere that even my normally-shy daughter got caught up in.

The horse parades are spectacular – those riders standing on galloping horses made my heart stop a few times. Check the festival dates when planning; it’s worth organising your holiday around it if you can.

Outdoor Adventures for Active Families

Camí de Cavalls: Coastal Path Explorations

The Camí de Cavalls is this incredible ancient path that circles the entire island. Obviously, I’m not suggesting dragging your kids around all 185km, but certain sections are perfect for family walks.

We did the bit between Binimel·la and Pregonda, which takes about an hour each way with kids. The views are sensational – all dramatic cliffs and secret coves. You’ll find yourselves collecting weird-shaped rocks while spotting lizards darting between bushes.

Bring loads of water and decent hats – there’s precious little shade, and nobody wants an overheated child in tow.

Horse Riding: Saddle Up

Even if you’ve never sat on a horse before, Menorca a Caballo offers rides suitable for complete beginners. Any horse-mad family members young and old will be in absolute heaven, while the more cautious can opt for a gentle pony ride at Trebaluger.

The trails take you through gorgeous countryside and along beaches that you can’t access by car. Watching my daughter’s face as her horse splashed through shallow water at the edge of a beach – pure delight that was worth every penny.

Lloc de Menorca Zoo: Animals and History

This isn’t your typical massive zoo – it’s smaller, more intimate, and focused on rescue animals. The lemur enclosure was the highlight for us; those cheeky little creatures jumped right over my youngest’s head, causing both terror and delight.

There’s a brilliant water play area for when the kids get hot and bothered, and bizarrely, a Bronze Age monument right in the middle of the zoo. We spent a whole day here, finishing with a picnic in the playground area while the kids pretended to be various animals they’d seen.

Practical Tips for a Stress-Free Trip

Definitely rent a car. Seriously, don’t even think about not renting one. Menorca’s bus system exists but trying to get to the best beaches with kids and all their stuff on public transport is a nightmare I wouldn’t wish on anyone. We have hired a car twice for our entire trip. The roads are good and easy to navigate and even in peak season you’ll struggle to find any major traffic.

Time your visit for late April to June or September if you can – the weather’s still gorgeous but you’ll avoid the August madness. We went in late May and it was perfect – warm enough for swimming but not so hot the kids were constantly complaining.

For accommodation, we’ve tried both Cala Galdana, Cala’n Bosch, Son Bou and Punta Prima with great success – they all offer something a little different. If you’ve got really little ones, the Royal Son Bou Family Club is brilliant – kids’ clubs that they actually want to attend (miracle), and the rooms are set up for families.

Food-wise, don’t miss trying dorada a la Menorquina (sea bream with potatoes and veg). Even my fussy eater demolished it at a little restaurant in Binimel·la. Most places are geared up for kids, so you won’t be getting unwelcome looks if yours aren’t perfectly behaved.

Pack water shoes – some of those gorgeous coves have rocky entries to the sea, and nothing ruins a beach day faster than a child with cut feet. And if you’re staying in Cala’n Bosch, bring a stroller – it’s properly flat and easy to navigate – but don’t rely on the hire one’s if you’re tall, bring your own.

For rainy days (they happen, even in paradise), the Castillo Menorca play centre saved our sanity. It’s basically a massive indoor soft play with a café where you can drink coffee in peace while the kids burn off energy.

From snorkeling in crystal coves to exploring ancient ruins, Menorca delivers those magical family moments that’ll stay with you forever. It’s the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation, without the crowds and madness of its bigger sister Mallorca.

That’s a long stretch of beach to find the best hotels in Fuerteventura. I’ve visited the island’s most stunning spots to find the top accommodation picks. Whether you want to unwind, explore, or maybe chase a little of both, these hotels and resorts should help you find your perfect base.

We last travelled here child free for a change, but have also visited with the kids and it’s a great destination for both types of trip – so you’ll find adult only hotels and child friendly hotels below, kicking off with one for the adults…

1: Secrets Bahía Real Resort & Spa – Adults Only

The Secrets Bahía Real Resort & Spa in Corralejo is gorgeous and clearly geared towards adults only – it felt calm and peaceful, and the hotel was immaculate.

The architecture of the hotel itself is rather beautiful, and it’s literally steps from the beach. All you’ve got from between the hotel rooms and the sand is a border of tropical gardens, which then continue round to wrap around the pools to create a private little world. They make the grounds look wonderful.

My room, which was a suite, was incredible, and looked out over Lobos and Lanzarote islands. I spent a lot of time on the balcony, especially with the sun rising or setting.

The pools are big and surrounded by palm trees and loungers, with plenty for everyone. I barely wanted to leave the grounds. Though if I did, I had the convenience of the beach and also a great town close by.

The spa here is very good – modern and quiet, and with a great range of treatments. If you’re after a luxurious escape, this spot is hard to beat.

2: Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace

The Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace is a superb resort and hotel, right on Jandía Beach with sweeping sea views. It’s so easy to wander onto the sand for a morning walk or just lounge all day.

The hotel focuses on comfort and calm. My room had everything I needed, and more – it was on the highest floor, with stunning views of the sea and beach.

I loved the heated pool and the adults-only area with its own pool, lounge, and bar. That being said, it’s also suitable for families.

Dining was fantastic here. There’s a buffet serving local food and a Japanese restaurant with ocean views. All in all there was lots of options and plenty of each, and even some creativity in what was on offer – plus it all tasted amazing.

If you book a Star Prestige room, you get extras like a private sun terrace, special check-in, and access to the spa water circuit. All staff were wonderful, and the entire hotel was spotless.

3: Sheraton Fuerteventura Golf & Spa Resort

The Sheraton Fuerteventura Beach, Golf & Spa Resort is sensational. Yes, it’s right on the beach, offering beautiful views from many rooms. But the entire hotel itself has been so brilliantly designed, with lots of landscaping involved – even inside the hotel!

The pool area is awesome. It’s heated so even if you’re here off peak, you’ll enjoy a swim amongst all the shrubs and trees – it really is a great space to spend time in.

My room was spacious and well equipped, and overlooked the sea. I love a sea view, but the pool is kept so clean and pretty that even rooms overlooking poolside have a decent view.

The restaurants on-site gave me plenty of choice, from Spanish dishes to international favourites. The staff were super helpful and efficient.

The golf course seemed to be a huge hit. I’m not into golf myself, but what a bonus if you are to have one on the resort. I did notice a lot of partners left on their own on poolside, though I can’t say they looked disappointed about it!

The spa offers some good treatments. I didn’t have a chance to book in myself, but I had a nose and it looked very much like a perfect place to have a pamper.

4: Barceló Fuerteventura Royal Level – Adults Only

Barceló Fuerteventura Royal Level – Adults Only is of course unsuitable and indeed unavailable for families (but there is a family-friendly version next to it, which I mention in position 6 in this guide).

Adults only is a major selling point for many of us, and this hotel relishes in providing a tranquil and recharging environment for us grown-ups. The hotel sits right on Caleta de Fuste beach, and many of their gorgeously decorated spaces overlook it.

The rooms are stylish and spacious, decorated with simple local touches. Some suites have their own patios, though I’d personally always opt for a balcony with a sea view.

There’s a private restaurant and pool just for Royal Level guests, which made things feel a little more exclusive. The heated saltwater pool is lined with palm trees and loungers, and little areas to retreat to.

I spent some time at the wellness centre for a bit of pampering, and the gym was very well-equipped for a quick workout. Staff were always friendly and ready to help.

All-inclusive meals were very well stocked and tasted good. The breakfast is excellent. Water sports, tennis, and a golf club are all close by, too.

5: XQ El Palacete

XQ El Palacete is standout. I absolutely adore this hotel – it’s in the most perfect location, sitting right above the ocean in Morro Jable, and every room and suite has a sea view.

Waking up to the sound and sight of the Atlantic honestly never got old. The atmosphere is calm, and the staff pay attention to the small details, which we all know is what makes all the difference to a holiday.

The food and drinks here are excellent. Really high quality, and much better than many hotels I’ve been to. (Remember, men aren’t allowed to wear shorts or trackies to dinner, so pack those linen trousers.) Evenings had live music and a relaxed atmosphere – I enjoyed every single night of my stay.

The rooms are spacious and bright with such breathtaking views. The outdoor pool looks out over the water, and the sun terrace is perfect for lazy afternoons. There’s also a jacuzzi and massage area.

Barceló Fuerteventura Royal Level is attached to the adult-only hotel I mentioned earlier. Again, it sits right on the golden sands of Caleta de Fuste, so you’re at the sea in no time.

The suites here are spacious and bright, with gorgeous Atlantic views. Don’t think that because this one welcomes families, it’s of lower quality – everything felt calm and organised, and the suite had all the comforts I wanted.

Some suites come with terraces or even a hot tub, which I think is a great option for couples who still want some luxury along with their family holiday.

Eating at the hotel was easy, with buffet and à la carte restaurants plus a few bars. The food was fresh and varied, and as a family we loved relaxed meals by the pool. The kids’ entertainment and family pool were great.

The exclusive Royal Level pool has saltwater and plenty of loungers. There’s a spa and gym for guests over 16, and you’ll find things like mini-golf and live shows for all in the evening.

Staff were helpful, and I liked being just a short drive from the airport and the island’s capital.

7: Hotel Riu Palace Jandia

Hotel Riu Palace Jandia is a crisp, luxury hotel that sits right on the beach, so you can step out and be by the sea in seconds. The beach is wide and clean, perfect for lounging or swimming. It’s a very quiet beach too, which is a bonus day and night.

However, you also have the wonderful grounds of the hotel itself to enjoy. Everything here is glossy and clean, and airy and roomy.

Rooms are modern and comfortable, immaculate and spacious, and it had a glorious view of the sea. Even the balconies had plenty of room to watch the waves with a cup of tea or a glass of wine.

The dining experience is great, with some fine dining options that were very good indeed. Evening meals were just as good as the brilliant breakfasts they put on, and all with fresh and well replenished options.

8: Barceló Corralejo Bay – Adults Only

Barceló Corralejo Bay is all about the extras and detail – it’s a very good option for adults who just want to unwind and relax. First off, you’re in a good location – just five minutes’ walk from either the beach or the town. But when I stayed, I didn’t want to leave the hotel grounds.

There are plenty of poolside amenities which means no fighting over sun loungers, and actually I quite preferred the day beds with their own tub – what a treat. Every area of the hotel looks clean and designed in a stylish, light décor with warm tones – it really is a delightful environment to be in.

The wellness centre here is impressive, with a range of treatments, massages, and a hydrotherapy circuit available. The outdoor pool is heated, too.

Our room was bright and came with a private terrace – it makes a difference when you actually want to spend some time in your hotel room. The bed felt super comfortable, and I had no trouble getting Wi-Fi anywhere in the hotel. Some rooms show off side views of the ocean or pool, and a few have extras like a hot tub or a Balinese bed.

The fitness studio stays open long hours, which made it easy to squeeze in a workout. Food was good here. By midweek I did fancy trying something else, so we walked into the town to try out a local restaurant before nipping back to the luxury of our hotel.

You get everything here. Pampering (oh, the spa is absolutely gorgeous), It’s peaceful, and you’re still close to Corralejo’s main buzz.

9: AVANTI Lifestyle Hotel – Only Adults

The AVANTI Lifestyle Hotel in Corralejo is a real hidden retreat for adults. It’s gone for simplicity and elegance laced with luxury, from the Egyptian cotton sheets to the fresh flowers in my room.

Each room feels thoughtfully put together, and with fewer rooms overall, there’s a real sense of privacy here. That alone is quite an achievement, as you are minutes away from plenty of shops and restaurants to explore. Somehow, when you walk back into the hotel it’s as though you’re nestling back into your own little retreat, which is wonderful.

The rooftop terrace became my favourite spot, where there’s a hot tub and those sweeping sea views. The natural light and white interiors make everything feel airy, and it’s easier to judge a hotel’s cleanliness with this décor: AVANTI scored top marks – it was immaculate.

The food was incredible here. Breakfast stood out for me – lots on offer from omelettes to full English and croissants, all while gazing out at the ocean.

The staff were exceptional here and made us feel so welcome.

10: Barceló Fuerteventura Castillo

Barceló Fuerteventura Castillo sits right on the beachfront in Caleta de Fuste, which as we’ve seen is a great spot to stay.

The bungalows you reserve here are bright and spacious. Some are set up for families, while others come with whirlpool baths and terraces. Mine had a whirlpool bath and overlooked the gardens and the sea – it was perfect.

Dining here is easy, with buffet and à la carte restaurants serving both local and international dishes. I grabbed light lunches at the pool bar and tried the Italian menu in the main restaurant.

The all-inclusive option is good value, and upgrading to the Plus package means more branded drinks (which is always my preferred option). There are three outdoor pools, a large wellness centre, and plenty of activities for families or anyone who likes to stay active.

The entertainment team keeps kids busy, while the gym and spa offer some space to unwind.

I thought this was a wonderful stay with attentive staff in a well maintained hotel, at a very good price.

Summary

So much can shape your hotel choice in Fuerteventura – from how easy it is to get around, to what you want to do, and who’s coming with you. Every factor can shift your trip from just okay to genuinely memorable. There’s something for all of us here, though I think being in a good location where you can both explore and relax is the winning combination.

Fuerteventura means ‘windy island’, which believe me, is a welcome breeze when the season is hot. That being said, I travelled in November and the weather was still around 24 degrees with a breeze in the evenings. This little island is a wonderful getaway, and just a short flight away from the U.K.

This 2,200-year-old Egyptian temple was gifted to Spain in 1968. Standing there at sunset, watching the golden hour reflect off the temple’s stones whilst couples share wine on the grass nearby, made me understand why it’s become such a local favourite.

Last summer, I met an elderly madrileño who told me he’d been coming here every Sunday for twenty years. “The tourists come for photos,” he said, “but we come for peace.”

Madrid Río and Plaza de España

Madrid transformed 40 kilometres of riverfront into a brilliant linear park. Cycle paths, fountains, and enough space to lose yourself for hours. I hired a bike for €3 and spent an afternoon following the river, stopping at cafes along the way.

Plaza de España deserves a quick mention too. The Cervantes monument is free to admire, and the square connects perfectly with Gran Vía for an afternoon stroll.

Pro tip: Cycle Madrid Río early morning, then walk to Gran Vía for window shopping and people-watching.

The Big Three’s Golden Hours

Prado Museum: Monday to Saturday, 6-8pm. The queues can be heavy, but arriving at 5:45pm usually works. I learnt this the hard way when I turned up at 7 and stood there for an hour.

Reina Sofía: Monday, Wednesday to Saturday, 7-9pm, plus Sunday afternoons. Picasso’s Guernica alone is worth the wait. I remember standing in front of it whilst a Spanish art student beside me explained its historical context – better than any audio guide.

Thyssen-Bornemisza: Mondays, 12-4pm. Smaller crowds, brilliant collection. Perfect for escaping Tuesday afternoon rain (speaking from experience).

Hidden Cultural Gems

Andén 0: Madrid’s secret metro museum feels like time travel underground. Found beneath Chamberí station, it preserves a 1919 metro station perfectly. I discovered it by accident whilst getting properly lost and spent an hour fascinated by vintage posters and old turnstiles.

Frontón Beti Jai: This restored Basque pelota court offers free entry most days. It’s architectural brilliance meets sporting history, and barely any tourists know about it.

Museo de San Isidro: Madrid’s history in a beautiful building. Free entry, and they often have special exhibitions that big museums would charge €15 for.

These smaller spots taught me something important: Madrid’s best cultural experiences often hide in plain sight, waiting for curious wanderers rather than guidebook followers.

Streets Full of Stories: Free Historic Wandering

Madrid’s landmarks don’t hide behind admission fees – they’re right there, part of the living city.

Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor

Sol’s famous Kilometer 0 marker gets stepped on by thousands daily. Why? It’s the geographical centre of Spain. Standing there, I always imagine all the journeys that began from this spot.

Plaza Mayor deserves some time, not just a quick photo. The uniformity of its red buildings creates this incredible enclosed feeling, like you’re inside a postcard. Early mornings reveal it at its best.

Don’t leave Sol without trying bocadillo de calamares from one of the surrounding bars. It sounds grim (fried squid sandwich), but trust me, it’s a Madrid institution.

Gran Vía and Surrounding Streets

Gran Vía buzzes with theatres and Art Deco architecture. I love walking it at night when neon signs create this almost Times Square-esque vibe, but distinctly Spanish. Last time we visited Madrid we stayed in a hotel right next to the Gran Via metro station and have stayed at a fair few Gran Via hotels – one of the best locations if you want to be super central.

Calle Montera, running from Gran Vía to Sol, shows Madrid’s grittier side. Some might warn you off, but walking it during the day reveals brilliant vintage shops and character that sanitised tourist areas lack.

Hidden gem: Pop into Círculo de Bellas Artes if you can spare €4 for their rooftop. OK, so it’s not free – but the 360-degree views make it the best €4 you’ll spend and one of the best rooftop bars in Madrid you’ll find.

Royal Palace Area

EU citizens get free Royal Palace entry on Mondays and Thursdays (after 4pm). Non-EU folks should content themselves with the exterior and surrounding gardens – honestly, the building’s facade is impressive enough.

Almudena Cathedral, right next door, offers free entry to its main nave. The contrast between its modern interior and traditional exterior always surprises visitors.

Sabatini Gardens provide perfect Royal Palace views without entrance fees. Spanish couples love this spot for evening walks – follow their lead.

El Rastro Flea Market

Arrive early to beat crowds, but stay late for the atmosphere. As vendors pack up, locals emerge with wine glasses, transforming the medieval streets into impromptu tapas tours.

One thing to note here though: watch your belongings – pickpockets love Sunday chaos.

Mercado de Motores

Once monthly, this vintage railway museum transforms into a market. Free entry, brilliant atmosphere, and you’re exploring Spanish railway history between stalls. I discovered it purely by chance and watched kids play around on old train carriages whilst parents browsed handmade crafts.

Madrid’s street art scene thrives in neighbourhoods like Lavapiés and Malasaña. Grab a map from tourist information and create your own street art tour.

Sol’s street performers range from brilliant to bizarre. I once watched a break dancer perform to saxophone music whilst a statue performer caught tourists’ reactions – proper performance art.

Pro tip: Follow Time Out Madrid on social for free event listings, and don’t be shy about dropping coins for performers – they’re part of Madrid’s charm.

Free Walking Tours

Sandemans and Guruwalk offer tip-based tours around €5-10. These introduced me to Madrid’s hidden corners I’d never have found alone. The guides work for tips, so they’re genuinely invested in showing you brilliant content.

I joined a “Hidden Madrid” tour that revealed secret courtyards, forgotten monuments, and local haunts. Money well spent – or should I say, well-tipped.

Cultural Events and Festivals

Madrid’s cultural programming is mega. Free outdoor theatre happens regularly in parks during summer. Following @madridfreeweb on social media became my secret weapon for finding events.

Let me share the practical stuff that’ll keep your euros intact whilst maximising experiences.

Getting Around

The 10-trip metro card costs €6.10 – brilliant value. Madrid’s centre is walkable though, so mix walking with metro when your feet protest.

I learnt this lesson after attempting to walk everywhere – sometimes it just isn’t worth the exhaustion and time spent, when you can just get a metro card for next to nothing.

Safety Stuff

Pickpockets target tourists, especially near major sites. I watched someone lose their phone at Retiro’s Crystal Palace. Keep bags zipped and phones secured. Crowded metro carriages and busy markets require extra awareness.

Timing and Planning

Check museum free hours before heading out – they change seasonally. Monday becomes “park day” when many museums close.

Print or screenshot free hour times; don’t rely on mobile data when you need it most.

Food Hacks

El Tigre (near Gran Vía) serves massive free tapas with drink orders. €3 beer comes with enough food for lunch if you’re strategic.

Menú del día offers three courses plus wine for €10-14 at lunch. Spanish office workers swear by this – follow their lead.

Language tip: Basic Spanish goes far here. “Gracias,” “por favor,” and “¿Habla inglés?” opens doors, even if you butcher pronunciation like I did initially.

Tenerife is just a short flight away – within just a few hours you could be enjoying the largest of the Canary Islands and its wonderful beaches, warm weather, and Spanish culture. Famed of course for its year round pleasant temperatures, you’ll find plenty going on in the winter months as well as the summer months.

Amongst the many hotels on the island, we’ve selected the best hotels in Tenerife. Take a look at why we think they’re worth some serious consideration.

1: The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama

The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife has a dramatic sea view that’ll notice as soon as you arrive. As well as the views, the hotel itself has well-kept and lush gardens, and elegant architecture.

The grounds are huge – everything about The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife of course feels luxurious. The beach club was perhaps my favourite spot. It sits right on the sand. You’ll also find seven different pools scattered around, which all offer something a little different in design.

The room I stayed in was very comfortable, had wonderful sea views, and was decorated in calm, earthy colours.

The food and drink here scored highly for me. M.B, which is the hotel’s two Michelin-starred restaurant, was easily my favourite. Expectations were high, and easily met with incredible food and wonderful staff.

You can also opt for less fussy dining in other areas, especially the beach club, and also Txoko, which is Basque cuisine with some local dishes to enjoy.

This hotel is very family friendly, with the chain’s largest Ritz Kids program in Europe right here. All staff were kind and helpful, and were keen to help me when I needed advice on the local area and transport.

2: Bahía del Duque

Bahía del Duque is in a great location, overlooking the sea in Costa Adeje. I’d say it’s the best area in Adeje. The hotel itself is beautiful to look at, especially with the sea views and landscaping.

There are 4 well-maintained pools here, and the hotel always looked clean and tidy throughout my stay. There’s also plenty on offer for food and drink, with eight restaurants and seven bars, one of which is a juice bar.

The spa is definitely worth a visit. Staff were excellent here in all areas of the hotel – attentive, friendly, and also give you space.

This hotel’s location is perfect. You’re right on a beautiful beach, so you can easily explore the local area.

3: Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora

The Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora is a neat, calm location, with sensational views of the sea. Even when the lobby area got a little busy, it still felt peaceful and relaxed, while staff were quick to help us guests.

You only have three pools here. One of them is enough for plenty though, and spans across the hotel. Another pool for kids which has slides and a splash park, and a third heated pool.

The gardens are lovely, and you can get straight to the beach from the hotel. Dining was very good here, with plenty on offer in 7 restaurants and 3 bars. The buffet was regularly topped up and tidy, and food was always fresh.

This hotel seems more suitable for couples, but they welcome families too – you can opt for the RedLevel add-on, which gives families their own lounge areas, extra facilities in their family rooms, plus exclusive breakfast areas and even a PlayStation room.

4: Royal River, Luxury Hotel

Royal River, Luxury Hotel is what you’d expect it to be in terms of luxury – very peaceful and private, and it’s adults-only.

The villas are spaced out, and each has its own private pool. I stayed in a Grand Pool Villa, but there are River Villas that join onto a river-like pool and Lagoon Villas are on a lake.

The rooftop infinity pool is stunning. It has panoramic views that look over the Costa Adeje Golf Course and the sea – it really is a great spot for watching the sun go down.

The four restaurants were amazing, as was the spa. The decor throughout was simply beautiful, and cleanliness was first-class.

It’s a little further from the beach, but it offers a tranquil space of luxury away from the crowds in return.

5: Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey

Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey does things a little differently; it’s an urban hotel in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with a ‘colonial’ design and peaceful gardens. I loved this hotel for how different it is compared to the typical look of many others, including its Fuerteventura hotel that we visited not longer after this visit.

The spa is worth a visit, especially the hydrotherapy circuit. They only have two pools here, indoor and outdoor, which are small and intimate. Dining is good, with four restaurants. I can recommend the Papa Negra Sprunch experience, and the breakfast was standout.

The Iballa lobby bar is a great place to have coffee (and study the photos of famous guests who have stayed here). The hotel is full of character and charm, and is very clean, too.

It works for both leisure and work trips, with spaces for events and plenty of quiet corners for relaxing.

The hotel’s in a great location, and if you’re driving it’s perfect for a decent parking spot.

6: Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife

I’ve been to a number of Hard Rock Hotels, so I knew what to expect with this one in Tenerife – lively vibe, modern and cool, but comfortable too.

This hotel is on the beachfront, and has 3 very clean pools which are on the luxury end and very spacious too. You’ve also got an adults-only pool and a kids’ one, which is a bonus.

This place always has enough sunbeds, and staff were on hand if you needed anything. Even during busy times, the pool area never felt particularly crowded.

There are 12 restaurants to choose from and bars, all well stocked with plenty of variety. On some nights there was live music, which is expected from any Hard Rock Cafe establishment, and makes a good night even better.

My room felt fresh and roomy, with music-themed decor that was fun but not over the top, plus some decent facilities.

7: Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide

Parador de Cañadas del Teide is in a league of its own in terms of location in Tenerife. It sits within Teide National Park, surrounded by mountains and nature.

It’s far from the city and typical tourism spots, in a quiet part of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. My room looked out over the park and Teide itself.

It felt cozy here, especially after a long day exploring. The mountain air made it easy to sleep, and the silence at night was wonderful – at most you’d hear the trees and the odd animal.

The hotel’s restaurant serves local dishes. I spent some time in the indoor pool after hiking. They even had a small exercise room, though I didn’t use it myself.

You’ll need to drive to get here, but the roads are good. Staff were helpful, even with advice on good walks and the park.

The whole experience felt authentic and very different from your standard hotel stay.

8: JOIA El Mirador by Iberostar

JOIA El Mirador by Iberostar is a sanctuary for adults-only. The hotel sits right by Playa del Duque beach on the Costa Adeje “Golden Mile”.

The hotel is super elegant, and has a romantic atmosphere you wouldn’t get in a family resort.

My room gave me access to the exclusive Star Prestige La Balconada area. I spent lots of time on the private sun terrace with a stunning sea view.

Here, you get a butler and concierge team who aren’t overbearing, just genuinely helpful. There’s a big spa (over 1,000 square metres), plus a gym with sea views.

I tried all three different restaurants, including the fine-dining El Cenador, and the pool bar is great for service.

Service overall felt polished and attentive, but not too much.

9: Royal Garden Villas & Spa

Hotel Royal Garden Villas in Costa Adeje has individual villas which each have their own private, heated, pool. It’s definitely a luxury retreat where lots of attention goes into every detail.

My villa had a fully equipped kitchen, a drinks cabinet, and a terrace with ocean views. It was peaceful and comfortable, with tasteful décor and soft fabrics everywhere.

I tried the buffet breakfast at the Jardín Restaurant and liked the variety and quality. Staff were attentive and friendly, and the wine selection at dinner was a surprise.

The spa was really good, and has a Jacuzzi and Turkish bath. Plus, the hotel sits close to the golf course, which is a huge advantage for golfers (and those who’d rather be left in the spa).

It’s not just for couples though – families are welcome here, too.

Iberostar Selection Anthelia is right next to Fañabé beach in Costa Adeje, so you can see the sea from almost anywhere here. The hotel also offers lots of green space and gardens, so it’s a great location on and off the premises.

For pools, you’ve got the saltwater pool and the two freshwater pools, as well as children’s pools that have slides and a pirate ship theme. There are lots of sunbeds available, and all the views are superb.

The spa is decent here too, with some very good treatments for just yourself or as a couple.

Dining’s great here, with five different restaurants and three bars. Breakfast was particularly good. Local dishes and international options were all well stocked with lots of variety.

Staff were very friendly and professional, and the atmosphere is casual but with real attention to detail.

Entertainment ran from day into night, with activities for both adults and kids. A quality all-rounder for everyone, in a great spot.

The little garden has a quirky cocktail menu served in cute little tea cups and vintage glasses. Its also has a food menu which does great brunches and tapas.

Walking into Azotea del Círculo, I was immediately struck by the stunning views of Madrid. This rooftop bar sits at the top of the illustrious Círculo de Bellas Artes building, offering nearly 360-degree views of the city’s skyline so it’s a great place to take in the sunset.

The menu at Azotea del Círculo features innovative Spanish cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. I enjoyed some delightful tapas, each dish harmoniously blending traditional flavours with modern touches.

To complement the food, the bar offers an impressive selection of cocktails. Sipping a well-crafted cocktail while gazing over Madrid’s rooftops was an experience to remember. The blend of excellent drinks and breathtaking views makes this spot truly special.

Ella Sky Bar Madrid is a gem in the heart of Madrid. It’s located on the 10th floor of a historic building, offering stunning views of Callao Square and the iconic Schweppes sign. The atmosphere is both stylish and relaxing, making it a perfect spot for any time of day.

Dining here is a treat. The tapas, seafood, and meat plates are delicious, and the cocktails are expertly crafted. I particularly enjoyed their brunch at the weekend, which featured a wide selection of dishes for a reasonable price.

El Retiro Park

El Retiro park once belonged to the Spanish royal family and it still retains its air of grandeur. With tree lined avenues to stroll along, beautiful statues to admire and a pretty rose garden to explore you’ll manage to while away a few hours here. Bring along a picnic and enjoy in the shade of one of the 15,000 trees in the park or hire a rowing boat and enjoy the park from the tranquility of the water. A stroll through the park is without a doubt one of the best things to do for free in Madrid.

El Retiro is open from 6am until midnight from April to September and from October to March is open from 6am but closes at 10pm.

San Miguel Market

If you love food as much as we do then you will be in heaven at Mercado de San Miguel. The hardest part of visiting this amazing food market is deciding what to eat, there are so many different options, from traditional Spanish fare to some of the hottest new food trends such as delicious filled bao buns.

It can get very busy so finding a seat is tricky but there are plenty of places to perch while you enjoy your food and soak up the atmosphere. However, if you are there on a Tuesday from 1st March 2024 they take bookings for tables in the evenings click here to find out more.

Calle de Cava Baja For Tapas

Another one for the foodies, Calle de Cava Baja, in La Latina neighbourhood, is a street full of amazing tapas places. Take a leisurely stroll down this colourful little street and you will find over 50 tapas restaurants. It is famous for having the best tapas in Madrid so makes the perfect place for a tapas crawl.

All the tapas bars had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists mixing and enjoying tapas with a glass or two of wine.

Palacio Real

Palacio Real (the Royal Palace) is the largest palace in western Europe and is definitely the grandest building in Madrid. Unusually, it is open to the public even though it is the head of state’s residency.

There is a great atmosphere around the palace with musicians and street performers entertaining the visitors. You also have sweeping views of the countryside surrounding Madrid.

This view is due west so makes the perfect spot to watch the sunset over Madrid.

Chocolate & Churros At Sin Ginés

Sin Ginés Chocolatería is an institution in Madrid. It was established in 1894 and is famous for its rich melted chocolate and freshly fried churros. Just writing about them is making my mouth water!! Surprisingly Sin Ginés is open 24 hours and it’s always busy as churros make the perfect snack anytime of day or night.

They were so good that we went twice during our three day stay.

Plaza Mayor

Right next to Sin Ginés Chocolateria is Plaza Mayor a grand central square in the oldest part of Madrid. There are cafes and restaurants on all sides of the square so it makes the perfect place to people watch while enjoying a refreshing drink or a spot of tapas.

Visit A Roof Top Bar

There is a plethora of roof top bars to choose from in Madrid, often on the top floor of hotels, but sometimes hidden in more unusual places such as above bag shops. They are one of the best places to enjoy a glass of cava or a cocktail while enjoying a refreshing breeze and taking in the stunning views. Away from the hustle and bustle of the streets below you can relax and take some time out.

El Rastro Flea Market

There’s only one thing to do on Sunday morning in Madrid; head straight to El Rastro Market. This sprawling open air market spreads out across the streets of La Latina with more than 700 stalls, perfect to discover all sorts of hidden treasure.

It’s not only great to pick up a bargain or some souvenirs, it’s also a place for Madrileños to meet and grab a coffee or a bite to eat in one of the many cafes and tapas bars close by.

We found Madrid to be a wonderful city to explore and would definitely return as we didn’t have time to do everything during our stay. We loved that beneath Madrid’s regal exterior a relaxed, laid back vibe can be found around every corner.

Free Entry To Museums And Art Galleries

Barcelona has hundreds of wonderful museums and art galleries but most of them charge a fee. However, if you plan wisely, you can devise an itinerary to visit all the places on your wish list and not pay a penny. Many museums and galleries are free on the first Sunday of every month and often have other times during the week when they don’t charge an entrance fee. For example, The Picasso Museum is free on Thursdays from 5pm to 7pm (beware booking is still essential) and The Contemporary Art Museum is free every Saturday from 4pm to 8pm. It’s best to visit the museum or gallery’s own website to check times before you go.

Stroll Down Las Ramblas First Thing In The Morning

Las Ramblas is the most famous street in Barcelona and gets extremely busy all year round, but it’s one of those quintessential places you simply have visit when in Barcelona. The street is about a kilometre long and runs from Plaça de Catalunya to the old port. This wide, tree lined avenue is flanked by beautiful historic buildings and is full of flower stalls, street artists and pavement cafes. If you visit early then it has more of a local vibe and is slightly less crowded.

Passeig Marítim

Passeig Marítim is the 4km long promenade that runs alongside Barcelona’s gorgeous, golden sandy beach. Barceloneta beach is the closest to the city and the most popular, but if you fancy something quieter then head north towards the Forum area. It’s the perfect place to head to and rest your tired feet after exploring the busy city. Simply grab a drink from a nearby shop and sit on a bench to enjoy the view and my favourite pass time, people watching.

Get Lost In The Gothic Quarter

From the beach you can head back through the Gothic Quarter’s gorgeous, historic winding streets. Barri Gotic is the oldest neighbourhood in Barcelona and round every corner you find quirky independent shops, quiet little plaças, cute little bars and pavement cafes. Wandering through the cobbled streets, finding hidden gems and getting a little bit lost is one of the best ways to see any city.

Visit A Food Market

La Boqueria is the most famous food market and is just off Las Ramblas, so attracts thousands of visitors daily. It has over 300 stands offering fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables both locally produced and some more exotic fare than you might find even in the best Barcelona restaurants. It also has many take away stalls offering everything from traditional Spanish tapas dishes to sushi.

However, if you want something a bit more authentic and less touristy, head to Santa Caterina or

These markets still offer amazing food and drinks and are full of atmosphere, with less tourists and more locals.

Gaze At Gaudi Architecture

Visiting Sagrada Familia might be top of your list to visit while in Barcelona, this stunning cathedral is the most iconic building in the city. It has now been under construction for over 140 years and is expected to be finished in 2030 at the earliest. However, this is just one of many Gaudi buildings that you can visit. Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and Palau Güell are just a few of the other examples of his modernistic architecture.

If you plan a route you can see many of his most famous buildings in one day, on foot and using public transport. The other option is to book yourself on a free walking tour of Barcelona where all you need to pay is a 3€ booking fee and your transport costs.

Explore Parc Güell

Parc Güell is possibly my favourite Gaudi creation, as it combines beautiful art work and colours with gorgeous views out over Barcelona. It is set on the hill side in the area of Gracia, north of Sagrada Familia so you will need to take the bus or the metro to get there. Like the museums, there are times when entry to the monumental zone of Parc Güell is free. The first Sunday in every month from 1st November to 30th March you can gain access for free and from 1st April to 31st October every Sunday between 5pm and 8pm.

Visit During One Of Barcelona’s Many Festivals

The Spanish love a festival so finding a time when they are celebrating is easy. While we visited recently it was Santa Eulàlia Festival which happens at the beginning of February and though not as huge as the city’s many summer celebrations, this festival still provides a chance to see lots of the local traditions – such as sardana dances, correfoc fire runs and castellers (human towers), and plenty of parades featuring giants, devils, dragons and other assorted beasts.

There is practically a festival every week including carnival parades, fireworks, film and music festivals. The choice is yours!

The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

This spectacle of light and music started way back in 1929 during the Great Universal Exhibition and was refurbished more recently in 1992. The Magic Fountain is an amazing display of colour, light, motion, music and water acrobatics and it definitely lives up to its name. Make sure you check the website as display times do change and are suspended during droughts.

Why not visit the Castell of Montjuic while you are there? It’s free on Sundays after 3pm and all day every first Sunday of the month.

Slide Into Shopping

A little bit of fun to finish with. The famous department store Sephora has a branch located just off Plaça de Catalunya, in the centre of Barcelona, and has recently installed an innovative way to get into its store. You can now ‘slide into beauty’ down an enclosed spiral slide. So if you’re looking for a bit of a thrill after a day of serious sightseeing its the perfect stop off before you hit those tapas bars.
