Gran Canaria doesn’t really do “one size fits all.” That’s the first thing you notice. You land expecting a beach holiday and then realise you’ve got volcanic peaks, sand dunes that look like the Sahara, cobbled old towns, and resort strips stretching as far as the eye can see. Choosing where to stay in Gran Canaria isn’t just about price or star ratings. It’s about figuring out what kind of trip you actually want.

The south is warm, sunny, and built for tourism, think sun loungers, all-inclusives, and cocktails by 11am. The north is greener, a bit windier, and honestly feels like a completely different island. The interior? That’s for the hikers, the slow travellers, the people who’d rather stay in a finca than a five-star.

It’s one of the easiest warm-weather escapes going, especially in winter. But with so many areas to consider, picking where to base yourself can feel overwhelming. So here’s a proper breakdown.

The Best Areas and How to Choose

Las Palmas (North)

Las Palmas is the island’s capital and it’s got a city energy to it. You can spend the morning strolling along Playa de las Canteras, a long, gorgeous urban beach that somehow manages to feel relaxed despite being right in the middle of a city. Then spend the rest of the day pottering around the Vegueta old town eating tapas at places that have no English menus whatsoever (always a good sign).

It is windier up north, worth knowing if you’re going in winter. But for food, culture, and that authentic Spanish feel, Las Palmas is perfect. It’s particularly good if you’re travelling solo or as a couple who’d rather explore than just lounge.

Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés (South)

This is where most tourists end up and there’s a reason for that. The dunes at Maspalomas are stunning. You walk out into them and it feels like you’ve accidentally stumbled into the Sahara.

The area is well set up for families, with lots of all-inclusive resorts and water parks nearby. It’s also one of Europe’s most welcoming LGBTQ+ destinations. Playa del Inglés next door gets livelier at night, the Yumbo Centre is the hub for nightlife if that’s your thing, though you can very easily avoid it if it’s not. Peak season (Christmas through February) does get packed. Around 3 million tourists visit the Canaries during winter months, so book early if you’re planning on going then.

Puerto de Mogán (Southwest)

This one’s sometimes called “Little Venice” because of its small canals and flower-draped bridges. It’s a bit of an exaggeration but also… not entirely wrong. It’s genuinely pretty. Small, upmarket, and very much built around its marina. You can sit at a harbour side restaurant watching boats drift past while eating the grilled fish with a glass of wine.

It’s more expensive than the rest of the south, and the beach is nice but not enormous. But if you want somewhere that feels a bit more refined and less resort-heavy, Mogán is worth spending a bit extra.

Puerto Rico (South)

Good value, family-friendly, and with a beach that’s almost always sheltered from wind. Puerto Rico is a reliable choice that doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves. The bay is calm and perfect for kids. There are boat trips out for dolphin watching (we spotted a pod on our last outing, absolute highlight). It’s hilly though, which means a lot of steps and steep streets, something to bear in mind if mobility is a consideration.

Meloneras (South)

Meloneras sits just next to the dunes and has a lovely promenade lined with upscale restaurants, boutique shops, and some of the island’s finest hotels. It’s noticeably quieter than Maspalomas and draws a slightly older, more relaxed crowd. Ocean sunsets from the promenade are gorgeous and worth a walk even if you’re not staying there. If you’re after spa days and long lunches without the buzz of a resort centre, this is your spot. Just budget accordingly.

San Agustín (Southeast)

Sandwiched between Playa del Inglés and Meloneras, San Agustín is a solid middle ground. The beach has darker sand, almost black in places, which some people love and others find odd. It’s peaceful here, less dominated by large resort complexes, and the spa hotels along the seafront do a roaring trade for good reason. Good value compared to Meloneras, without feeling budget.

Rural and Interior (Tejeda, Arucas, Agaete)

Not for everyone, but absolutely worth knowing about. The interior of Gran Canaria, particularly around Tejeda and the Roque Nublo area, is dramatically beautiful. Volcanic rock formations, pine forests, tiny villages where people stare (in a friendly way) when outsiders turn up, we had someone come up to us and shake our hand in Santa Brigida. Small fincas and rural guesthouses here are brilliant for anyone wanting to hike and genuinely disconnect. You’ll need a hire car though; public transport out here is not the best.

Hotels Worth Knowing About

There are hundreds of places to stay across Gran Canaria, so here are some that consistently come up for the right reasons.

Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa – Meloneras. One of the island’s flagship properties. Huge, well-run, with multiple pools and direct access to that promenade. The thalassotherapy spa is impressive. Its a bit of a splurge but the facilities justify it for a longer stay.

Paradisus Gran Canaria by Meliá – Maspalomas. All-inclusive done well. The kind of place where you can spend an entire week without feeling like you’re missing anything. Great for families or couples who want everything sorted.

Marina Suites – Puerto Rico. Apartment-style suites with stunning sea views and a rooftop pool. More independent than a resort; better suited to those who want to self-cater or explore rather than be waited on constantly.

Radisson Blu Resort Gran Canaria – Playa del Inglés. Solid mid-to-upmarket option. Modern rooms, good pools, and well positioned for getting around the south.

Grupotel Orquídea – Playa del Inglés. If budget matters, this one ticks the boxes. It’s clean, friendly, family-run feel and has great pools.

Servatur Waikiki – Playa del Inglés. Another good budget-to-mid option. A favourite with families because of the pool area and the location, easy walking distance to the beach and the shopping centres.

Casa Cueva Bandama (where we stayed when we recently visited Gran Canaria) is a renovated cave dwelling near Santa Brígida. It’s only about 14 miles from the airport and tucked into the volcanic landscape near the Bandama Crater.

It’s not as crazy as it sounds, at first we didn’t even realise it was a cave house. It has two bedrooms, a jacuzzi, a pool-bar setup, a BBQ terrace, and amazing views. We loved relaxing outside with a glass of cava in the hot tub and the views were simply amazing!

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

Gran Canaria’s year-round mild climate is one of its best features — temperatures rarely dip below 18°C even in winter, which is why it’s such a popular escape from January through March. The south stays warmer and drier; if you’re going for guaranteed sunshine, base yourself down there.

Hire a car. I know I’ve said it already but it bears repeating. The south is walkable if you stay in one spot, but the moment you want to explore the interior or pop up to Las Palmas for a day, you’ll want wheels.

All-inclusives work well here if your priority is relaxation. But if you want to actually eat local food and see the island beyond the resort gates, a self-catering apartment or boutique hotel gives you more freedom — and often works out cheaper for longer stays.

Pack a layer for evenings, especially if you’re going to the north or staying into October or November. And try the local Canarian wine if you get the chance — underrated, genuinely good, and cheap by UK standards.

So, Where Should You Actually Stay?

It really does depend on what kind of trip you’re after. Families and sun-seekers tend to do best in Maspalomas or Puerto Rico. Couples wanting somewhere quieter and more upmarket will love Meloneras or Mogán. Culture hunters and city types should look at Las Palmas. And if you want something genuinely memorable rather than just a nice hotel — book the cave house.

Gran Canaria is one of those rare places that manages to be both easy and interesting at the same time. It’s well connected from most UK airports, the weather is reliably good, and there’s genuinely more to see than most people expect. Whatever kind of traveller you are, you’ll find your corner of it.

Sanur isn’t the Bali most people picture when they first start planning a trip. You probably think of Seminyak’s beach clubs or Kuta’s chaos. But Sanur is the quiet one and once you’ve spent a few days there, you start to wonder why you’d ever go anywhere else.

It’s one of Bali’s oldest resort areas, tourism here started long before the Instagram crowds arrived, and that history gives it a grounded, village-like feel that’s genuinely hard to find on the island particularly in the south.

There’s a 7km beachfront promenade lined with cafes, temples, and bikes for hire. The reef keeps the water calm, which makes it brilliant for families or anyone who just wants to swim without getting battered by waves. And it’s only about 20-30 minutes from the airport, which after a long-haul flight, really matters.

In this guide, I’m covering the best places to stay across every budget, from proper luxury retreats to guesthouses where the owner brings you coffee in the morning. Prices are approximate in USD for 2026 and do vary by season, but you’re generally looking at anywhere from $30 to $350 per night depending on what you’re after.

So Why Sanur?

The beach here is lovely, white sand, clear water, protected by a reef so it stays safe for swimming and paddling. The boardwalk is one of my favourite things about the place; you can rent a bike and just cruise for hours past little warungs, temples, and street art. Sunrise is something else entirely, I was out there at 6am one morning and had the whole stretch almost to myself. Worth the early alarm.

It’s also perfectly placed. Ferries to Nusa Penida leave from just down the road, so it works well as a base for day trips. And eating here is cheap if you step away from the resort menus, the local warungs on the main streets have meals for only a few dollars. One thing to flag: seaweed can wash up on the beach seasonally, which some people find off-putting. It comes and goes. Not a dealbreaker, just worth knowing.

The Luxury End

If you’re going to treat yourself somewhere, Sanur is perfect. The high-end spots here sit in the $150-350/night range, and a few of them are genuinely exceptional, not just “nice for the price,” but actually really special.

Maya Sanur Resort & Spa

This is the one I keep coming back to when people ask for a recommendation for a honeymoon or a romantic trip. The architecture is stunning, all lagoon-access rooms, private balconies, and those infinity pools that make you feel like you’re hovering over the water. The spa is excellent, the breakfast spread is impressive, and the staff have a way of making the whole place feel effortless without being over the top. It’s pricey, yes. But for a special occasion, it is definitely worth it.

Hyatt Regency Bali

A slightly different vibe, bigger, more family-oriented, with multiple pools and a private beach stretch. The grounds are beautiful, dining options are varied (the beachside setting at lunch is hard to beat), and there’s a club lounge that makes the upgrade worth it. A few people I know have returned here several times, which says something. Just skip the resort breakfast if it’s not included, there are better options outside for a fraction of the cost.

Bali Beach Hotel (The Meru Collection)

This one has history, it’s been part of Sanur’s landscape for decades and has been renovated into something truly elegant. Sea-view balconies, lagoon pools, a kids’ club, and a gym. The shared facilities with the adjacent buildings can feel a little disjointed if you’re not expecting it, but the character of the place more than compensates. It’s the sort of hotel that feels like it has a story to tell.

The Middle Ground: Great Value Without Going Overboard

This is honestly where Sanur shines brightest. The $60-200/night bracket here is stacked with good options, places with proper pools, gardens, and close enough to the beach that you won’t feel short-changed.

ARTOTEL Sanur

Boutique, stylish, with a rooftop infinity pool that catches the sunrise beautifully, this one tends to appeal to solo travellers and couples who want something with a bit more personality than a standard chain hotel. It’s not right on the beach (short walk), but the aesthetic more than makes up for it. The breakfast gets rave reviews, and it’s well-positioned for both the beach and the local shops.

Prama Sanur Beach Hotel

Direct beach access, a kids’ splash zone, a swim-up bar, and lush gardens, this one does family holidays well. The staff get consistently good feedback, there are bikes to hire, and the kids’ club means parents might actually get an hour to themselves. One minor note: pool shade is limited, so bring hats for the little ones.

Holiday Inn Bali Sanur

Don’t dismiss this one just because it’s a chain. The rooftop pool with ocean views is beautiful, the bedding is quality, and the location near the ferry terminal makes it particularly practical if you’re planning a day trip to Nusa Penida. Rooms are consistently clean and well-maintained. It’s not exciting, but it’s reliable and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Sanur Resort Watujimbar

Spacious rooms, plunge pools, and a large pool with a bar, this one punches above its price point. It’s close to the shops and beach without being right in the thick of it, which suits people who want a quieter base. Good for longer stays.

Our Budget Picks

Under $70/night in Sanur goes further than you’d expect. You’re not going to get a private villa, but there are some genuinely charming guesthouses and small hotels that make Bali feel accessible without any compromise on the experience that actually matters.

Laghawa Beach Hotel

Direct beach access, a garden pool, lotus ponds, and traditional Balinese architecture, Laghawa is one of those places that feels like a hidden gem. The grounds are quiet, the sunrise spot is hard to beat, and the whole thing has a character that you just don’t get from budget chain hotels. Rooms are on the older side and there can be some noise depending on where you’re situated, but for the price, it’s brilliant.

Kembali Lagi Guest House

Small, peaceful, and run with a level of care that you don’t always find at this price point. The pool is lovely, the breakfast gets excellent feedback, and the staff are the kind of helpful that actually makes a difference, sorting last-minute scooter hire, recommending where to eat whatever you want they’re there for you. There are family suites available, too, which makes it more versatile than it might first appear. It’s not flashy, but it’s warm and friendly.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Book

Stay central if you can, being walkable to the main strip of warungs and the boardwalk makes a real difference to how you experience the place. Resort dining is fine, but eating out at local spots will save you a significant amount and often taste better anyway.

Book via apps and check for shoulder season deals, late April through June, and again in September, tend to be sweet spots where prices drop but the weather holds. Peak season (July, August, and Christmas) sees rates climb sharply, so either book well ahead or be prepared to pay for it.

Renting a scooter gives you a lot more flexibility, particularly for getting to restaurants and markets beyond the main drag. Most hotels can arrange this for you. And if you’re planning a Nusa Penida day trip, check ferry times in advance, as the early morning boats tend to fill up quickly.

One last thing: check your specific hotel’s beach access before you book if that’s a priority. Some mid-range spots are a 5-10 minute walk rather than beachfront, which is fine for most people but worth knowing. The reef means tides can affect how much sand is exposed — not a huge deal, but something to bear in mind.

Why We Love Sanur

Sanur doesn’t need to be sold hard. It just works, for families, for couples, for solo travellers who want somewhere calm to decompress after months of planning. The accommodation options here span every budget without ever feeling like you’re compromising on the Bali experience.

Whether you end up at Maya’s infinity pool or a guesthouse with lotus ponds and a friendly host who knows every good warung in a five-minute radius, you’re going to be fine. More than fine, actually. That’s the thing about Sanur. It has a way of quietly exceeding expectations.

We took our own advice and decided to escape the never-ending grey skies of the UK in search of some winter sun. When Gran Canaria popped up as a destination we could fly to for under £200 for our family of four we couldn’t resist booking a long weekend and started to research all the things to do in Gran Canaria so we could make the most out of our time there.

Gran Canaria has winter temperatures that sit around 20°C, which is perfect for exploring this beautiful island with lush green mountains, sandy beaches and amazing Spanish food and wine.

Explore Las Palmas

Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria and really has it all, a beautiful sandy beach, lots of great cafés and restaurants and a gorgeous old town to wander round. It’s the perfect base if you want everything within walking distance.

Our first stop in Las Palmas was Playa de Las Canteras, a 3km long stretch of golden sand. Perfect for a morning stroll, feeling the sun on our faces and the sand between our toes was heavenly. To make it even better, there are plenty of places to stop along the promenade for a coffee and a pastry with uninterrupted sea views.

The Old Town (Vegueta) has a totally different feel to the beach with cobbled streets, colonial style buildings and gorgeous little squares. If you are interested in history then you have to visit Casa de Colón, a striking colonial-style building which is famous for its elegant inner courtyards, carved wooden balconies, and fascinating exhibits about Christopher Columbus and the Canary Islands.

Nearby, you will find the Plaza de Santa Ana which is home to the first church in the Canary Islands. This grand palm-lined square is famous for its bronze dog statues (which my daughter loved), elegant colonial buildings, and relaxed café atmosphere.

From here I suggest you just wander through the cobbled streets and find a little restaurant or cafe to have lunch or a drink. We found a lovely little place with tables in a tiny square that served traditional Spanish food.

If you fancy a cocktails with a view I would recommend Terraza Belevdere which is the roof top terrace at Boutique Hotel Cordial. It’s hidden away behind a small entrance way off Plaza de Santa Ana and doesn’t open until 3pm but is the perfect hidden spot right in the centre of Vegueta.

Take A Hike In The Mountains

Gran Canaria offers so many different hiking options through its mountainous landscape, and winter is the ideal time to explore, with temperatures reaching a comfortable 21–22°C. We were staying near Caldera de Bandama, which is a dramatic 1,000-metre-wide volcanic crater offering panoramic views from its rim. Here, there are a few different trails you can take but the 3.5km circular route around the crater was great for us.

Tamadaba Natural Park has a network of trails through ancient Canary Island pine forests, dramatic cliffs, and sweeping Atlantic viewpoints. If you want cooler air and quieter paths then this is the place for you.

Roque Nublo is the island’s most iconic hike, leads to a towering volcanic monolith at 1,813m with sweeping views across Gran Canaria, and even to Tenerife on a clear day.

If you like sea views and are up for a challenge then try the unforgettable coastal hike over rugged mountains to reach Güigüí Beach. One of the island’s most remote and wild beaches.

Taste Some Local Produce

The mountains are home to some gorgeous little towns each offering different specialities such as the chorizo in Teror, almonds in Tejeda or local goats cheese from Valleseco.

We visited the local town of Santa Brigida on Sunday morning and bought local cheese, vegetables and meat from the market and found a lovely little bakery for some sweet treats and then took them back to our villa for a lazy Sunday lunch with a view of the mountains. Heaven!

Wine Tasting

There are plenty of small vineyards in Gran Canaria offering a variety of wine tasting experiences. Bodega San Juan was really close to where we were staying. You get to walk through the vineyard, look around the small wine museum and the old stone cellar before tasting their wines paired with cheese and bread. The friendly guide gives you a little insight into the family history of the vineyard while you enjoy the sipping on a glass of volcanic wine.

Rum Tasting

If wine isn’t your thing then maybe opt for a spot of rum tasting. The historic rum distillery in Arucas, Destilerías Arehucas, offers guided tours through its production halls and one of the oldest rum cellars in Europe. After, you get to taste their various rums and liquers while learning about the history and process of making rum. The Canarian speciality of ron miel (honey rum) is delicious and you won’t be able to resist bringing a bottle or two home with you.

Little Venice of Gran Canaria

Known as “Little Venice” Puerto de Mogán is a little coastal village known for its colourful houses and small canals. It is one of the prettiest villages on Gran Canaria and definitely worth a visit. Its whitewashed houses are covered in flowers, there is a cute marina and even a lovely little sandy beach.

You can also wander up through the town to the mirador for lovely views and then return to the harbour to grab lunch with a sea view or relax on the beach.

The Paseo de Canarias Promenade

Firgas is a charming mountain village in the north of Gran Canaria with a unique focal point. Paseo de Canarias is a stepped walkway in the heart of Firgas designed to resemble a flowing waterfall. As you walk down the steps next to the water feature, you’ll pass colourful mosaic tiles representing all the Canary Islands, beautifully crafted ceramic benches, and detailed crests of Gran Canaria’s municipalities. Its not a full day trip but if you want to explore the north of the island it definitely needs to be on your itinerary.

Dunas de Maspalomas

For a completely different experience you can visit one of the island’s most extraordinary natural landscapes, a vast expanse of golden Sahara-like sand dunes stretching along the southern coast. They are protected as a nature reserve so make sure you stay on the designated paths and don’t wander off into protected zones which are there to prevent erosion.

Its a lovely place to watch the sunset or you can combine it with some time at the beach as Playa de Maspalomas backs onto the dunes.

Why We Love Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria has a climate that is perfect all year round and makes a perfect place to escape the grim British winter. It not only has great weather but also has amazing food and a relaxed Spanish culture. The landscape is dramatic and diverse, just how we like it. One minute you’re high up in surprisingly lush mountains, the next you’re wandering the cobbled streets of a cute little town before grabbing dinner at a vineyard.

What’s not to love?

Sicily’s ancient Greek ruins are 100% worth visiting – but making a mistake could ruin the experience, and leave you out of pocket. Here’s what I’ve learned.

When you visit Sicily’s ancient ruins, you get to see the most beautifully preserved temples and cities that allow you to experience ancient civilisations and stunning architecture.

From the jaw-dropping Valley of the Temples in Agrigento to the perfectly positioned Ancient Theatre of Taormina (with views that’ll have your Instagram followers green with envy), these UNESCO treasures tell stories spanning thousands of years. The Neapolis Archaeological Park in Syracuse and the beautifully preserved temple at Segesta round out what’s essentially an open-air museum spread across the entire island.

But if you do it wrong, would should give you a tingle down the spine could easily become a sweaty, expensive nightmare.

After chatting with locals, fellow travellers, and making my fair share of blunders, I’ve put together these five genuine mistakes to avoid. Check them out, so that you get the very best experience, and memories from it.

1. Visiting During Peak Heat Without Timing It Right

Valley of the Temples in Sicily. Credit: Instagram @liv.tours

My first visit to the Valley of the Temples was a rookie mistake of epic proportions. I rocked up at 1pm in late July, with no consideration for going at ‘the right time’. I was convinced I’d just power through the heat. Big. Mistake.

Sicily’s Mediterranean climate turns these stunning ancient sites into absolute furnaces, especially from June through August when temperatures regularly soar past 35°C. After dragging myself halfway through the site, I was so exhausted that I gave up and missed some of the most impressive temples. What a waste of a ticket!

When I returned six months later and visited at 8am, it was a completely different experience. The morning light was gorgeous for photos, the temperature was bearable, and I practically had the place to myself.

You can still go in those popular summer months, though. The best bit about the Valley of the Temples is that they’re open until 11pm during summer months, and let me tell you, seeing those columns illuminated against the night sky is stunning. The evening crowd is thinner too, so you’ll spend less time queuing and more time soaking in the history.

Some quick time and money-saving tips:

Always check the specific opening hours for each site – they change seasonally

If you’re visiting Syracuse in summer, pair your Neapolis Park visit with a swim at nearby Arenella Beach to cool down after

Keep an eye on accuweather for heat waves – when temperatures hit 38°C+, even mornings can be brutal

2. Coming Unprepared for the Terrain, Water, and Sun

I wore my cute leather sandals – the ones with zero support and slippery soles. By the time I’d climbed the steep, uneven steps to the upper viewing sections, my feet were killing me and I was terrified I’d slip on the worn marble.

Sicily’s ruins aren’t your typical tourist sites with neat pathways. There are uneven stones, steep staircases, and long stretches of exposed walking. The Valley of the Temples alone covers nearly 3km of hilly terrain!

Don’t wear flip flops either – a woman at my hotel showed me her feet after a day at Neapolis Park in flip-flops and she was smothered in blisters. Which no doubt ruined the rest of her trip while they healed.

I also made the classic mistake of assuming I’d find water easily. At Segesta, which is relatively remote, I ended up paying €4 for a tiny bottle at the only café. Now I bring my own refillable bottle and ask my hotel where I can top it up.

This might sound obvious, but the sun protection bit is crucial. Pack your own or you’ll be paying around €22 from shops cashing in on this classic error.

Quick tips to save time and cash:

Pack sturdy trainers or hiking sandals with grippy soles

Download the Maps.me app and save offline maps with water fountain locations marked

Bring a lightweight long-sleeve shirt – sometimes covering up is better than reapplying sun cream every hour

3. Skipping Guides, Audio Tours, or Basic Research

“Aren’t these just old rocks?” I overheard someone say at Segesta. I nearly cried. Without context, yes, these magnificent ruins can seem like piles of ancient stones.

Segesta Sicily tour guide. Credit: Instagram @visittrapaniwithangelo

During my first visit to the Valley of the Temples, I wandered aimlessly, missing significant features because the signage was minimal and mostly in Italian. When I returned and spent €5 on an audio guide, the entire experience transformed. Suddenly, I understood why certain temples were positioned as they were, the symbolism behind architectural features, and the fascinating history of Greek colonisation in Sicily.

At Taormina, I spent €25 on a guided tour with a local archaeologist, and it was worth every cent. She knew exactly which angles offered the best views and pointed out details I would have completely missed, like ancient graffiti carved by Roman visitors.

I spoke with a British couple who’d skipped Syracuse’s Greek Theatre because they thought the Roman Amphitheatre was the “main attraction.” In reality, the Greek Theatre is arguably more impressive and historically significant – but without doing a bit of homework, how would they know?

If you don’t want to spend, here are some tips:

Spend a bit of time researching each site before visiting

Look for group tours that let you split the cost with other travellers

Check if your accommodation offers free guided tours – many hotels in Agrigento have arrangements with local guides

I’m not a history buff by any stretch, but having even basic knowledge about what you’re looking at makes such a difference between “nice pile of rocks” and “mind-blowing connection to the ancient world.”

4. Poor Transportation Planning and Falling for Scams

Getting to Sicily’s ancient sites can be… challenging. When I tried to visit Segesta by public transport, I missed the last bus back and ended up paying €50 for a taxi to the nearest town. Ouch.

Taormina parking. Credit: Instagram @jedireyandfn2187

The public buses in Sicily run on what locals jokingly call “flexible time.” The bus to the Valley of the Temples was supposed to come every 30 minutes, but after waiting nearly two hours one afternoon, I gave up and walked the 3km in the heat.

Parking at Taormina is another nightmare. The tiny car parks fill up quickly, and I ended up in an unofficial “parking area” where a man charged me €15 for the privilege of leaving my rental car in what was essentially a dirt patch.

Speaking of scams, always confirm the taxi fare before getting in. A driver outside Syracuse tried to charge me €35 for what should have been a €15 ride. When I questioned it, suddenly his English became “very poor.” Funny, that.

For my second trip, I rented a small car with full insurance coverage. It cost €30 per day, but the freedom to arrive at sites early and leave when I wanted saved me both time and stress.

Tips to avoid transport headaches:

Download the Moovit app for somewhat reliable public transport information

If you’re renting a car, get an international driving permit beforehand – some agencies ask for it

For sites like Neapolis in Syracuse, walking from the city centre is actually faster than dealing with buses or parking

When I stayed in Agrigento, I found a small family-run B&B just 15 minutes’ walk from the Valley of the Temples entrance. It was cheaper than city centre options and saved me all the transport faff.

5. Overpacking Your Itinerary and Missing the Best Bits

On my first Sicily trip, I tried to visit three major archaeological sites in one day. Absolute madness. Sicily’s winding roads, relaxed pace, and the sheer size of these sites make rushed itineraries a very bad plan.

Neapolis Park. Credit: Instagram @yourtravelinformation

I learned to limit myself to one major site per day, sometimes with a smaller attraction if they’re close together. This gives you time to properly explore without feeling like you’re in a race.

Everyone flocks to Taormina’s theatre. And yes, it’s gorgeous, but it gets incredibly crowded and expensive (€10+ entry). Meanwhile, Segesta was nearly empty when I visited, costs less, and the hilltop setting is breathtaking.

Don’t forget to mix your ruin-hopping with local experiences. Some of my favourite memories are of the €5 arancini lunch I had after Neapolis Park, sitting in a shady piazza watching Sicilian life unfold.

Time and money-saving strategies:

Build in buffer time for traffic, especially around Palermo and Catania

Check for free entry days – many sites offer complimentary access on the first Sunday of each month

Consider staying in less touristy towns near the sites – prices drop dramatically just 10km away from hotspots

I skipped the overpriced gift shop at Valley of the Temples and instead found a lovely ceramic shop in a nearby village selling similar items for half the price. The owner even explained the traditional designs to me over a free espresso.

Get Ready To Explore Sicily

Sicily’s ancient ruins are among the most impressive in the world. The blend of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Norman influences creates a unique archaeological landscape that tells the story of Mediterranean civilisation.

By avoiding these five common mistakes, you’ll save yourself time, money, and a fair bit of frustration. More importantly, you’ll create space for those magical moments that make travel worthwhile – like watching the sunset cast golden light across 2,500-year-old temples or sitting in an ancient theatre imagining the performances that took place there millennia ago.

March is a great month to travel as it is officially shoulder season. There are fewer crowds, temperatures are just warming up nicely and you can get some amazing value deals.

I’ve always found March underrated. Everyone’s planning summer beach trips or have just got back from winter ski getaways, but March? March gives you options. Cherry blossoms in Japan, festival vibes in Spain or sunshine in the desert. Whether you’re after culture, food, or just some decent weather, there’s something that’ll work.

So if you’re thinking about getting away, here are six places to visit in March. These are spots where the timing makes all the difference and March is the perfect time to visit.

Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan: Cherry Blossom Season Begins

Late March in Japan is when things get really pretty. The cherry blossom forecasts start appearing (yes, they have apps for this), and if you time it right, you’ll catch the early blooms without the April madness. Temperatures sit around 10-15°C which is cool enough for a jacket but comfortable for walking around all day.

I spent ages tracking blossom predictions for a trip once, and everyone kept saying April was peak season. Turns out late March was perfect, fewer crowds, and the blossoms had this delicate, almost fragile quality that felt more special than full bloom.

In Kyoto, you can’t miss Fushimi Inari with its endless red gates. It does get busy, but go early morning and you’ll have more space to breathe. The Philosopher’s Path is stunning for blossom-spotting walks, and wandering through temple grounds when petals start falling feels like being in a film.

Hanami picnics are big here, people actually bring bento boxes and sit under the trees for hours. Pack some snacks from a konbini (Japanese convenience store), grab a spot in Maruyama Park, and just… relax for a while.

Tokyo gives you a different energy. Ueno Park is the classic cherry blossom spot, but it’s also where half of Tokyo seems to congregate. Still worth it though. Then there’s the contrast of neon-lit streets at night with blossom petals falling, Nakameguro river is good for this.

Food-wise, you have to try takoyaki from a street stall. Cheap, filling, and the right amount of comfort food when you’re walking around for hours. And if your feet are done in, find an onsen (hot spring bath). Nothing beats soaking your tired legs after a day of temple hopping.

Where To Stay In Kyoto & Tokyo

Hotel Kanra Kyoto – Stylish mid-range ryokan-inspired base in central Kyoto.

The Celestine Kyoto Gion – Elegant ryokan-style hotel in Gion, perfect for cherry blossom walks and early-morning temple visits.

Hotel Niwa Tokyo – Comfortable, well-located Tokyo stay with character.

Piece Hostel Sanjo (Kyoto) – Highly rated, affordable rooms right in the heart of town, great for blossom season exploring.

The Practical Bits

Flights from the UK to Japan can be reasonable in March, I’ve seen round trips for under £500 if you’re flexible with dates. Layers are your friend because mornings are cold but afternoons warm up. And yes, download one of those cherry blossom forecast apps. Sounds nerdy but it actually helps.

The one downside? Bloom timing is unpredictable. Some years they come early, some years late. But even without perfect blossoms, Japan in March is still stunning.

Seville and Granada, Spain: Festival Season in Andalusia

Spain in March means 15-20°C weather, warm enough to enjoy being outside without melting. And if you’re there late March, Semana Santa (Holy Week) kicks off with incredible processions through the streets. The atmosphere is something else, very intense, very beautiful.

Seville is where I’d start. The Alcázar gardens are blooming, and wandering through those courtyards feels like stepping into a different century. Flamenco shows are everywhere some are touristy, some are authentic. The real magic though? Tapas crawls. Order a drink and get free tapas with it, perfect if you are on a budget.

The cathedral is massive (the third largest in the world), and climbing the Giralda tower gives you views across the city. Worth the leg workout. And the orange trees lining the streets smell incredible this time of year.

Granada is about an hour away and worth the trip. The Alhambra is the palace everyone raves about, and they’re right to, it’s so impressive. Book tickets in advance because they sell out. The intricate tile work and garden courtyards are the kind of thing photos don’t quite capture.

What surprised me was how close Granada is to the Sierra Nevada mountains. You can literally see snow-capped peaks while spring flowers are blooming in the city. There are hikes up there if you fancy a change from city walking.

If you can manage it, head to Valencia for Las Fallas, a festival where they build massive sculptures then burn them. It’s chaotic and loud and absolutely worth experiencing. Happens mid-March, usually around the 15th-19th.

Where To Stay In Seville & Granada

Hotel Alfonso XIII – A classic Andalusian landmark with courtyard gardens and serious wow-factor.

Hotel Casa 1800 Seville – Boutique favourite in the old town with rooftop views and afternoon snacks included.

Shine Albayzín – Right beneath the Alhambra, combining historic charm with modern comfort.

Getting There

Ryanair and easyJet run cheap flights from UK airports to Seville or Málaga. March is before peak tourist season, so accommodation is more affordable too. Pack for changeable weather, it can rain, but somehow rain in Seville feels atmospheric rather than annoying.

New Orleans, Louisiana: Jazz and Southern Spring

March in New Orleans is post-Mardi Gras recovery time, which means the city’s calmed down a bit but still has that festival energy bubbling under the surface. Temperatures hit 20-25°C, and the azaleas start blooming in all the gardens. It’s when you get the soul of the city without quite as many tourists.

The French Quarter is the obvious draw, grab beignets from Café du Monde (yes, there’s always a queue, but it’s worth it), wander down Bourbon Street at night for live music spilling out of every bar, and just soak up the architecture. Those iron balconies and colourful buildings are ridiculously photogenic.

But the real gems are slightly off the beaten track. Frenchmen Street has better live music and fewer stag dos. Magazine Street is good for vintage shopping and local cafes. And you haven’t done New Orleans until you’ve tried a proper po’boy sandwich.

The bayou tours are brilliant. I wasn’t sure about kayaking near alligators, but guides know what they’re doing, and seeing the swamps up close is both eerie and beautiful. The WWII Museum is also excellent especially if you need a break from walking in the heat.

Food-wise, go for gumbo, jambalaya, and anything involving crawfish. It’s heavy, it’s rich, and it’s exactly what you want after walking around all day. The humidity starts creeping up in March, but it’s not yet at “can’t breathe” levels.

Where To Stay In New Orleans

Hotel Provincial – Great-value French Quarter stay with classic balconies and peaceful courtyards.

Hilton Garden Inn New Orleans – a comfortable, modern hotel with spacious rooms and convenient access to the French Quarter, streetcar lines, and local dining.

Flights from the UK usually connect through Atlanta or another US hub. March deals exist if you book early. Stay in the Garden District if you want something quieter than the French Quarter.

Charleston and Savannah: Southern Gardens in Bloom

These two cities in South Carolina and Georgia basically turn into postcards in March. Temperatures sit around 18-23°C, and the azaleas and dogwoods are in full bloom. It’s pre-humidity season, which means you can actually enjoy walking around historic neighbourhoods.

Charleston has incredible antebellum homes and tree-lined streets that make you feel like you’ve time-traveled. The Battery waterfront is lovely for an evening walk, and the food scene is phenomenal, lots of seafood, obviously. She-crab soup is a thing here, and it’s delicious if you’re into that.

The beach islands near Charleston (Folly Beach, Isle of Palms) are great for a day trip if you fancy some coast time. And there’s something charming about taking a carriage ride through the historic district, touristy but actually quite nice.

Savannah is about two hours away and has a completely different feel. The squares dotted throughout the city are beautiful, especially when spring flowers are out. Forsyth Park is the big one, bring a book, grab some takeaway coffee, and just sit for a while.

The ghost tours are surprisingly fun, even if you’re skeptical about that sort of thing. The city’s history is fascinating (and dark), and evening walks through the historic district have this atmospheric quality. Plus, the tour guides are usually entertaining.

Low-country boils are the food experience here, basically seafood, potatoes, and corn all boiled together with Old Bay seasoning. Messy, casual, and exactly the kind of meal you want.

Where To Stay In Charleston & Savannah

The Vendue – Art-focused boutique hotel near the waterfront with rooftop sunset views.

Zero George Street – Peaceful luxury hideaway known for its courtyard and award-winning dining.

The Marshall House – Historic hotel right in the heart of Savannah, full of character and Southern charm.

You’ll want to fly into Atlanta from the UK, then drive down (rental cars are easy). Both cities are walkable once you’re there, but having a car gives you flexibility for day trips.

Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona: Desert Blooms

Arizona in March is what desert travel should be—21-27°C, clear skies, and if you’re lucky with winter rainfall, wildflower superblooms that transform the landscape. It’s hiking weather, without the summer heat.

Phoenix has Camelback Mountain for proper hikes with city views, and spring training baseball if you’re into that. But the real draw is getting out into the desert. Seeing a saguaro cactus in person is weirdly moving, they’re massive and strange and beautiful.

Tucson and the Saguaro National Park are about 90 minutes south. The trails here range from easy strolls to challenging hikes, and sunset in the desert is one of those experiences that sounds cliché but I always love a good sunset. The light turns everything golden and pink, and it’s so quiet.

The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix is worth visiting if you want to learn about the ecosystem without committing to a full hike. And Sedona (two hours north) has those famous red rocks that look photoshopped but aren’t. The hiking is excellent, and the town has a quirky, slightly hippy vibe.

Stargazing in the Arizona desert is spectacular as minimal light pollution means you see stars you forgot existed. Bring layers because desert nights get cold, even in March.

Where To Stay In Phoenix & Tucson

FOUND:RE Phoenix – Creative, design-led hotel close to downtown galleries and desert hikes.

The Scott Resort & Spa – Palm-lined pools and resort vibes without feeling over-the-top.

Arizona Inn – Classic, relaxed Tucson favourite with gardens, tennis courts and old-school charm.

Direct flights from London to Phoenix exist on British Airways. Rental car is essential here, public transport isn’t really a thing. Pack sun cream, good walking shoes, and more water than you think you’ll need.

Jaipur and Varanasi, India: Holi Festival

India during Holi (usually mid-March) is unforgettable. Temperatures hit 22-30°C, and the festival involves throwing coloured powder at everyone. It’s chaotic, messy, and one of those experiences you’ll talk about for years.

Jaipur (the Pink City) has incredible palaces and forts. The Amber Fort is stunning, especially if you arrive early before tour groups. And the street food scene is excellent, think chaat, samosas and lassi from roadside stalls. Just pace yourself because your stomach needs time to adjust.

The City Palace and Hawa Mahal are the main sights, but honestly, wandering through bazaars and watching everyday life unfold is equally compelling. It’s loud, crowded, and colourful in ways that feel overwhelming and thrilling at the same time.

Varanasi is more spiritual as it’s one of Hinduism’s holiest cities, and watching sunrise ceremonies on the Ganges is genuinely moving. Take a boat ride at dawn, and you’ll see rituals that have been happening for thousands of years.

Holi in these cities means you will get covered in coloured powder. Wear clothes you don’t mind ruining, and embrace the chaos. People are welcoming if you’re respectful, and being part of the celebrations feels like a privilege.

Where To Stay In Jaipur & Varanasi

Samode Haveli – Former royal residence with courtyards and a peaceful escape from the city buzz.

Rawla Narlai – Atmospheric heritage stay if you want something unforgettable outside the city.

BrijRama Palace – One of the most iconic stays on the Ganges, best experienced at sunrise.

Practical Advice

Air India and other carriers offer decent deals from the UK in March. Organise your visa in advance (straightforward online process). Pack light, breathable clothes, hand sanitiser, and an open mind. The crowds and dust can be overwhelming if you’re not prepared, but it’s also an incredibly rich experience.

Why We Love Travelling In March

March doesn’t get enough credit. It’s that transitional month where destinations show you something different, whether it’s cherry blossoms just starting, festivals in full swing, or desert landscapes coming alive. The weather’s usually decent, the prices are reasonable, and you’re travelling when places feel more authentic, less overrun.

Check Skyscanner for flight deals, book accommodation early if you’re hitting festival dates, and pack layers because March weather is reliably unreliable everywhere. And maybe support local businesses where you can, small guesthouses, independent restaurants, local tour guides. Your money goes further, and the experience tends to be better.

I’ve spent more time than I’d like to admit digging through reviews, watching room tours, and reading traveller stories to figure out which are the best places to stay in The Cotswolds, whatever your budget.

Before you start booking, it helps to understand what you’re working with. The Cotswolds covers a massive area, we’re talking 800 square miles across five counties. So “staying in the Cotswolds” is a bit vague. You could be in a bustling market town or a quiet village.

Most places fall into a few categories: luxury country hotels with spas and fine dining, historic inns that’ve been around for centuries, boutique B&Bs run by locals, and self-catering cottages if you want your own space. Prices range anywhere from £100 a night for a decent pub room to £500+ for the full country estate experience.

Location matters more than you’d think. If you don’t have a car, you’ll want somewhere central like Stow-on-the-Wold or Moreton-in-Marsh with good transport links. But if you’re driving, the quieter villages, like Tetbury or the Slaughters, offer more atmosphere and fewer tour groups.

The Luxury End: When You Want to Splash Out

Lygon Arms, Broadway

This place has been around since the 1500s, which gives you some idea of the character and history you’ll find there. It’s been renovated fairly recently, so you get the historic bones with modern comforts, no need to choose between charm and a decent shower.

The rooms are spacious, and the spa’s vaulted ceilings make it feel a really special. People rave about the food here, particularly the steaks and afternoon tea.

Broadway itself is central enough for exploring, you’re close to Chipping Campden and the Cotswold Way if you’re into walking. The main downside is the price tag. You’re looking at £200-£400 a night depending on when you go. And in summer, the village gets absolutely rammed with visitors, so it’s not exactly a peaceful hideaway during peak season.

Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa

If you want the full country estate fantasy, this is it. Set in 500 acres near Chippenham (technically on the edge of the Cotswolds, but close enough), it’s got everything: an equestrian centre, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and a spa that people travel specifically to visit.

The rooms are truly luxurious and it’s more of a destination in itself than a base for exploration. You could easily spend your whole weekend on the grounds without needing to leave. The main catch is the price (£300+ per night) and the fact you’ll definitely need a car since it’s quite remote. But for a special occasion or if you just want to be spoiled, it’s the perfect place.

Lords of the Manor, Upper Slaughter

Upper Slaughter is one of those villages that doesn’t feel real, it’s so picturesque. This hotel fits right in: elegant without being stuffy, with gardens that overlook the valley and a restaurant people get quite excited about.

The place attracts a lot of couples looking for a romantic break, and you can see why. It’s got that “escape from everything” feel whilst still being close to the classic Cotswolds villages like Bourton-on-the-Water. Breakfast gets mentioned a lot in reviews, apparently it’s substantial enough to keep you going through a morning’s walk.

Historic Inns: Character Without the Luxury Price Tag

The Wood Norton Hotel, Evesham

Technically this sits just on the edge of the Cotswolds, but it’s a great option if you want Victorian grandeur without the full luxury hotel price. On arrival you can pick up an information sheet giving you a brief history, surprisingly the building was used by the BBC during World War II as well as being owned by French royalty.

The hotel staff were really friendly, and as our room was not quite ready when we arrived, we sat in one of the wood panelled rooms and enjoyed a lovely cream tea.

The rooms are spacious with gorgeous views over the Evesham Vale, we watched the sun set from the terrace and also had amazing views from our bedroom window.

As we visited in January we were delighted to find an open fire in the bar, where we enjoyed a cosy drink before dinner. The restaurant serves great food and a few dishes are created in collaboration with their Culinary Director, Glynn Purnell, who brings his signature flair to the menu.

We loved the relaxed atmosphere and the rural setting, with easy access to Broadway and the northern Cotswolds villages.

The Porch House, Stow-on-the-Wold

The Porch House claims to be England’s oldest inn, allegedly dating back to 947 AD. It has exposed beams, wonky floors and is packed full of history.

Stow-on-the-Wold is really central for Cotswolds exploring, with the Thursday market and antique shops providing some activity beyond just wandering. The pub food is great (not Michelin-starred, but hearty and local), and being right in the town centre means easy access to other Cotswolds restaurants and cafes.

The rooms are cosy rather than spacious, and walls in old buildings aren’t always thick, so weekends can get a bit noisy if the pub’s busy. But for authentic Cotswolds character at £150-£250 a night, it’s a great option.

The Howard Arms, Ilmington

This one’s been around for 400 years, sitting in a village that most tourists miss entirely. That’s part of its charm, you get the thatched cottages and rolling hills without the crowds.

The rooms have fireplaces and breakfast gets consistently good reviews. The village has some brilliant walking routes if you’re into that, with footpaths leading straight from the pub.

Its location is perfect if you want peace, less ideal if you want convenience.

If You’re Watching the Budget

The Holford Arms, Knockdown

Near Tetbury, so not in the thick of tourist central but still close enough to the main attractions. This one kept coming up when people were looking for somewhere that prioritizes food quality without charging luxury hotel rates.

The gastropub vibe means you’re getting good meals without stuffiness, and the area’s quieter than somewhere like Bourton-on-the-Water, which can feel a bit busy in the summer. Rooms are straightforward, clean, comfortable, nothing fancy but at a reasonable price for The Cotswolds.

Self-Catering Options

If hotels aren’t your thing, there are loads of cottages and Airbnbs scattered throughout the area, particularly around Lechlade and the smaller villages. You can often find places for under £150 per night, especially if you’re booking for a few days.

The advantage is having your own space and a kitchen, which helps with costs if you’re staying a while. The downside is you’re responsible for breakfast and you might miss out on the social aspect of staying in a pub or hotel. But for families or groups, it often makes more sense than booking multiple hotel rooms.

Booking Tips

Spring and autumn are your best bet for avoiding crowds whilst still getting decent weather. Summer is gorgeous but expect packed car parks and fully booked restaurants everywhere.

You really do need a car unless you’re staying somewhere like Moreton-in-Marsh with a train station. The villages are spread out, and buses are patchy at best.

Pack layers and decent walking shoes. Even if you’re not planning serious hikes, you’ll end up wandering through fields and along footpaths.

Our Favourite Places To Stay In The Cotswolds

Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa – A full country-estate escape with Michelin-star dining, an exceptional spa, and acres of private parkland.

Final Thoughts

The Cotswolds has this reputation for being quintessentially English, and I suppose it is, but that means different things depending on where you stay. The luxury hotels offer polish and pampering. The historic inns give you character and stories. The quieter spots provide actual peace rather than postcard-perfect tourism.

What works for you depends on whether you want to be in the thick of things or tucked away somewhere genuinely quiet. Whether you care more about the room or the restaurant. Whether you’re happy navigating country lanes or prefer walking to the village pub.

There’s no single “best” place to stay, just the one that matches what you’re looking for. Though I will say this: wherever you end up, book dinner in advance. Nothing ruins a romantic Cotswolds evening quite like ending up eating meal deal sandwiches in your room because everything’s fully booked.

Legian sits right between Kuta’s chaos and Seminyak’s polished boutique scene, which makes it perfect if you want a bit of both worlds and it’s only half an hour from the airport. It’s one of those places where you can roll out of bed and be on the beach in five minutes, spend your afternoon getting a massage for less than a tenner, then grab fresh seafood and a cold Bintang as the sun sets. It’s not fancy but that’s why I love it.

The beach itself runs for ages, with a flat boardwalk that’s perfect for evening strolls (though you’ll have to dodge a few vendors and the occasional beach football game). The surf’s gentle enough for beginners, which is why you’ll see loads of surf schools set up along the sand. We had our first ever family surf lesson here and it was so much fun we extended it.

What I’m about to share comes from my own stays and plenty of conversations with other travellers I’ve met along the way. Whether you’ve got £30 a night to spend or you’re ready to splash out on something a bit special, I’ll help you find the best places to stay in Legian.

Padma Resort Legian – a gorgeous beachfront resort with multiple infinity pools, lush gardens, and amazing service

Why Legian Makes Sense

The location is the main draw. You’re within walking distance of loads of restaurants along Garlic Lane, there’s shopping on Legian Street when you need a new sarong or some souvenirs, and the beach is basically your back garden. Day trips to Ubud for the rice terraces and temples are easy enough to arrange, or you can head south to Uluwatu for dramatic cliff views.

Cost-wise, Legian is really reasonable. You can find basic but clean accommodation for around £30 a night, or go completely overboard with luxury resorts that’ll set you back £400 plus. Street food is ridiculously cheap. I’ve had full meals with a beer for under a fiver. Even the nicer restaurants won’t break the bank compared to what you’d pay back home.

One thing that struck me about Legian is how it manages to feel lively without being completely overwhelming. There’s energy and buzz, especially near the beach, but walk a few streets back and things calm down. It’s that balance that makes it work for so many different types of travellers, families, couples and solo adventurers.

The Luxury End

Padma Resort Legian

Padma Resort Legian might be the most talked-about place on the strip. It’s directly on the beach with infinity pools that look out over the ocean, four pools in total, so you’re not fighting for space. They’ve got garden chalets scattered around, complimentary bike rides if you fancy exploring, and an adults-only club lounge that feels very exclusive. Rooms start around £110 a night depending on when you book.

I chatted to a family who stayed there and they couldn’t stop going on about the morning bike adventures and how attentive the staff were. They did mention it set them back a fair bit, something like £10k for eight nights with five people, which includes flights and activities.

If you’re looking for beachfront luxury where everything’s taken care of, this is the one for you.

Legian Beach Hotel

Legian Beach Hotel is built in a traditional Balinese style with 236 rooms ranging from standard superior up to spacious pool villas. Prices vary wildly, from about £75 for a basic room to £350+ for the fancy villas. They’ve got two pools: the Frangipani pool is family-oriented with a swim-up bar, whilst the Coco pool is adults-only if you want to escape the splashing.

What I found interesting here was the amount of activities they lay on. There are Balinese dance classes, cooking workshops, themed dinners, and evening fire shows. The beachside bungalows come with sarongs as a welcome gift, which is a lovely touch.

The food got good reviews across the board, though some people mentioned the gardens looked a bit tired in certain areas. Still, the overall consensus seemed to be “amazing” for the price point.

The Stones Hotel

The Stones Hotel is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, so you know it’s going to be a certain standard. It has a massive pool with a swim-up bar and jacuzzi, spacious rooms with balconies (some have private plunge pools), and it’s literally steps from Kuta Beach and the shopping areas. Rooms go from around £110 upwards.

The breakfast buffet here is apparently something else with custom eggs, loads of salad options, Asian dishes, even ice cream. You get welcomed with fresh coconut water, which feels very Bali. The bathrooms are done up in marble and feel quite modern.

It’s about a five-minute walk to the beach and 20-40 minutes to the airport or Seminyak depending on traffic.

Bali Mandira Beach Resort & Spa

Bali Mandira Beach Resort & Spa is another beachfront option with an infinity pool for adults and a separate fun pool for kids. The swim-up bar is a nice feature, and they’ve got family cottages if you need the extra space.

What people seem to love most is being able to walk straight onto the beach from your room – no roads to cross or long walks through corridors. The spa gets high marks too. One woman told me she’d had this incredible massage there that felt like “complete mind and body reset,” though that might’ve just been the holiday talking.

Astagina Resort Villas And Spa

If you want something a bit more secluded, Astagina Resort Villas And Spa offers private pool villas set in tranquil gardens. Two large communal pools, spa discounts, complimentary breakfast and high tea, and you’re still close enough to shops and the beach. Prices start around £75 a night. The villas are genuinely spacious, good for couples or small groups who want their own space. The pools are great if you’ve got kids who want to splash around whilst you sit nearby with a drink.

Away Bali Legian Camakila

Away Bali Legian Camakila has a day spa, sauna, gym, and pools (basically everything you need without the luxury price tag). Some rooms are poolside which is handy if you’ve got early-rising kids. The staff consistently get praised, the food’s decent, and the beach is ridiculously close. Air conditioning works well, which matters more than you’d think during humid stretches.

The Jayakarta Bali Beach Resort

The Jayakarta Bali Beach Resort gets mixed reviews, but still a great option. Parts of it feel a bit dated but it’s one of those older properties that’s been around forever. The pools are large with plenty of sunbeds, you’ve got direct beach access, and the breakfast is good. The staff are friendly and it’s in a family-friendly location. If you’re not bothered about having the newest fixtures and fittings, and you prioritise location and beach access over Instagram-worthy interiors, it does the job. Prices are around £50-70 a night.

Champlung Mas Hotel is another humble option close to the beach, markets, and food courts. Beautiful garden, easy transport connections, and the staff are really helpful. It’s basic in the best possible way, clean, comfortable, affordable. Great if you’re the type who spends minimal time in your room.

For proper budget picks, Zest Legian sits right in the heart of everything, Legian Village Hotel has pools and is on Garlic Lane which puts you close to loads of dining and shopping options, and Ibis Styles Bali Legian offers that reliable Accor standard for around £25-75 a night depending on the season. All family-friendly, all delivering more than you’d expect for the price.

Villas and Airbnbs Worth Considering

If you want your own space, Big Garden Villa 3BR on Airbnb is fantastic. It has three bedrooms AND three and a half bathrooms, spread across two floors. You’ve got a full kitchen, living area, free Wi-Fi, international TV with YouTube, and this massive private garden with its own shrine (that the owner comes and puts offerings on every day).

It sleeps six, costs around £100-150 a night depending on dates, and it’s a five-minute walk to Padma Beach. It is just off Garlic Lane so shops and restaurants are only a few steps away. When we stayed there a new mobile coffee shop (on the back of a scooter) had just opened up a few hundred metres away so the morning coffee run didn’t take long.

The host, Daisuke, sorts out tours and surf guides if you need them, and nothing is too much trouble.

Our kids loved having an actual garden all to themselves and a private pool they didn’t have to share.

My favourite part was the balcony that caught the early morning sun. I could just open the bedroom doors and sit out there with a cup of coffee and my book before everyone else got up.

Sun Island Boutique Villas sits on the Seminyak border and offers both private and shared pool options with breakfast included. Prices start around £110 a night. You get the privacy of a villa with the accessibility of being close to everything Legian and Seminyak offer.

Practical Bits That Actually Help

If you’re travelling with family, prioritise beachfront properties with decent pool setups. Places like Jayakarta or Mandira work well. Villas like Big Garden give you space to spread out without paying resort prices. Some people split their stays between Legian and somewhere quieter like Sanur, which I would definitely recommend.

High season (July-August, December-January) sees prices spike, so book early if your dates are fixed.

The wet season means pools become essential rather than optional. Morning activities and day trips work better than afternoons when the rain tends to hit. Traffic is worse during peak times, so build in buffer time for airport transfers.

Why We Love Legian

Legian gives you options, which is what makes it work. You can drop serious money at Padma Resort for that full beachfront luxury experience, or you can grab a villa like Big Garden for space and privacy without the resort price tag. Budget travellers aren’t stuck with rubbish options either as places like Kumala Pantai and the various mid-range hotels deliver clean, comfortable accommodation without the frills.

The mix of beach access, affordability, cultural touches, and proximity to the rest of South Bali makes Legian so versatile. It’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but, if you need absolute quiet and no vendors, look elsewhere. For most people who want a balanced Bali experience without having to choose between budget and location, it works.

In February, the days are short, the weather’s miserable (if you’re in the UK like me), and the only thing keeping me going is scrolling through travel pics and thinking, “Right, where can I escape to?”

February is actually brilliant for travel if you know where to look. You’re past the New Year price hikes, schools are back in session, and a lot of destinations are in that sweet spot between peak seasons. Plus, if you time it right around half-term or Presidents’ Day, you can get decent deals without battling the summer crowds.

I’ve spent far too many Februarys shivering in cardigans and wishing I’d booked something warmer. So this year, I did my research, proper deep dives into what actually works for a February escape. Whether you want to defrost on a beach, chase some snow, or just explore a new city without melting in 35-degree heat, here are some of the best places to visit in February.

Our Favourite Places To Stay In February

Hotel Bardo – a peaceful, adults-only boutique hotel with private pool villas, ideal for a crowd-free February escape in Tulum.

Hotel Peter and Paul – a gorgeous hotel set in a restored church complex, perfect for experiencing New Orleans before Mardi Gras crowds.

The Pearl Hotel – a retro boutique hotel with a heated pool and relaxed vibe, well suited to San Diego’s mild February weather.

Warm Beach Destinations

Let’s be honest, the main appeal of February travel is finding somewhere that doesn’t require three layers and a big coat. If you’re chasing sun and sand, these places are perfect without the eye-watering summer prices.

Mexico has become my go-to recommendation lately. The Riviera Maya especially, you’ve got Cancún if you want the all-inclusive vibe, Tulum if you’re after something more low-key and Instagram-worthy, or Akumal if you just want to swim with sea turtles without a hundred other people doing the same thing. The weather sits comfortably in the mid-20s to low-30s, which is that perfect beach temperature where you’re not melting but you’re definitely not cold.

I had a friend who went to Tulum in February and couldn’t stop talking about the cenotes, these natural swimming holes that are amazing. She found one that was practically empty mid-morning on a Tuesday, just crystal-clear water and limestone rocks. The Mayan ruins are worth a look too, though do them early before it gets too hot. You can easily do a week there for under £1,500 if you’re sensible about where you stay.

Puerto Rico deserves more love than it gets. It’s technically part of the US, so no passport drama if you’re flying from there (not helpful for us Brits, but worth noting). The bioluminescent bays are genuinely magical, I’m talking water that literally glows when you move through it. The rainforest walks are brilliant too, proper lush and green. Flights from the Northeast US are cheap in February, often under $200 return, which makes it very accessible.

The US Virgin Islands and Bahamas are solid choices if you want that Caribbean vibe but with a bit more structure and familiarity. The USVI in particular felt really safe and easy to navigate when I visited. The water temperature in February is still around 26 degrees, which is perfectly swimmable. Plus, the resorts tend to be quieter, so you’re not fighting for sun loungers at 7am.

St. Lucia and St. Maarten are gorgeous if you fancy something a bit different. St. Lucia’s got the dramatic Piton mountains and jungle vibes, while St. Maarten has that dual French-Dutch thing going on, which means excellent food and beach bars. Both get lovely and warm in February but without that oppressive humidity you get later in the year.

Hawaii is great for whale-watching in February, humpback whales migrate there, and apparently, you can see them from the shore if you’re lucky. I’ve not done this myself yet (it’s on the list), but a friend went to Oahu and saw whales from her hotel balcony. The Big Island’s volcanoes are stunning, and Kauai’s hiking trails are meant to be incredible. It’s not cheap, but February’s one of the better times to go if you want to avoid the worst of the crowds.

Winter Adventures

Not everyone wants to lie on a beach. If you’re one of those people who actually enjoys winter sports or dramatic snowy landscapes, February’s got you covered.

Utah’s national parks look absolutely stunning under snow. Moab, Bryce Canyon, Arches – they’re all transformed when there’s a dusting of white on those red rocks. Temperatures drop to around -5 to 10 degrees Celsius, so pack accordingly, but the trade-off is virtually no crowds. You can actually take photos without fifty other people in the background, which is worth the cold fingers.

credit @dinosaur802

I went snowshoeing in Canyonlands one February, and it was eerily beautiful, just us, the snow, and incredible rock formations. The ranger-led tours at Bryce Canyon come highly recommended too, though I didn’t manage to squeeze one in.

Colorado and New Mexico are the obvious picks for proper winter sports. Aspen’s pricey but undeniably beautiful with fresh powder in February. Santa Fe gets absolutely blanketed, they have over 300 inches of snow some years, and the art scene there is brilliant if you need a break from skiing. The food’s excellent too, lots of Southwestern flavours and cosy restaurants perfect for warming up after a day outside.

City Breaks and Cultural Spots

Sometimes you just want a proper city break with good food, decent nightlife, and maybe a museum or two. February works surprisingly well for this because you’re past the festive chaos but before everything gets unbearably hot.

New Orleans in the lead-up to Mardi Gras is an experience. The actual Mardi Gras day can be crazy, but if you go a week or two before, you get the building energy without quite the same chaos. The jazz scene, the French Quarter wandering, the food, it’s all brilliant. And crucially, you’re not dealing with that oppressive summer humidity that makes walking around New Orleans feel like moving through soup.

San Diego has gorgeous weather in February, consistently around 20 degrees and sunny. The zoo’s amazing, the beaches are lovely without being packed, and the food scene’s excellent. Torrey Pines for hiking, the Gaslamp Quarter for nightlife, La Jolla for seals and fancy dinners. It’s got a bit of everything without feeling overwhelming.

Las Vegas might seem like an odd choice for February, but the weather’s actually decent (low 20s), the pool parties are starting to kick off but aren’t at full madness yet, and you can get really good deals on shows and hotels. It’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you want pure entertainment and a break from reality, Vegas it is. The buffets, the shows, the general absurdity of it all, sometimes that’s exactly what you need in February.

International Destinations Worth the Flight

If you’re willing to go long-haul, February opens up some incredible options in the Southern Hemisphere or places with perfect dry-season weather.

Thailand has its dry season, which means beautiful beach weather without the rain. Also it’s really affordable, you can eat incredible food for a couple of quid, accommodation’s cheap unless you’re going full luxury, and there’s so much variety. Beyond the obvious Bangkok and Phuket, there are quieter islands and northern cities like Chiang Mai worth exploring.

The Maldives has its best weather in February, calm seas, clear skies, that beautiful blue water. It’s expensive, but if you’ve got a special occasion or you’re really treating yourself, February’s the time to go. The underwater scenery’s just as impressive as the overwater bungalows, if not more so.

New Zealand and Australia are in full summer mode. New Zealand’s landscapes are so spectacular, the South Island especially with those fjords and mountains. Australia’s massive, but Kangaroo Island’s seal colonies are adorable, and there are beaches everywhere that put European ones to shame. It’s a long flight from the UK, but if you’ve got the time, it’s worth it.

Costa Rica combines beaches and rainforest perfectly. The wildlife spotting’s excellent, and February’s in the dry season, so you’re not constantly dodging downpours. South Africa has pleasant weather for safaris without being too hot, and the landscapes are incredibly diverse. Both are good for eco-tourism if that’s your thing, with loads of opportunities to see animals in their natural habitats.

Final Thoughts

February doesn’t have to be a month of enduring grey skies and counting down to spring. There are genuinely brilliant destinations that work perfectly this time of year, whether you want warmth, winter sports, city culture, or long-haul adventure.

The key is booking reasonably early for any peak dates like Valentine’s Day or half-term, and being flexible if you can. Weather apps are your friend for checking conditions closer to the time, especially for beach destinations where a few rainy days can really impact your trip.

Personally, I’m leaning towards Mexico this February, those cenotes have been haunting my dreams since my friend wouldn’t shut up about them. But wherever you end up, just the act of booking something gives you that boost to get through January. And that’s worth it on its own.

Have you ever woken up to the sound of a volcano erupting in the distance, or opened your eyes to see an orangutan swinging through the trees just metres from where you’re lying? Times when you’re completely disconnected from emails, social media, and the endless ping of notifications are rare. Too rare for many of us, yet they’re there for the taking.

That’s what off-the-grid travel is all about. Not just escaping Wi-Fi (though that’s brilliant too), but immersing yourself in places so removed from everyday life that you can’t help but be present. And let me tell you, after spending years chasing these experiences, they’re worth every minute of planning.

The thing is, these hidden gems are getting noticed. What were once secret spots whispered about by hardcore travellers are now trending for 2025. People are desperate for authentic experiences away from the masses, which means capacity is limited and popularity is growing.

I’ve curated six absolutely stunning bucket-list adventures that blend raw nature with unique activities. From sleeping in geodesic domes in Canada to watching a volcano erupt in Guatemala, these are the trips that’ll give you stories to bore your friends with for decades – or simply treasure for yourself for a lifetime.

1. Sunnd Nordic Eco Resort, Northern Ontario, Canada

Sunnd Nordic Eco Resort. Credit: Instagram @emilywhoexplores

The first time I stepped into one of Sunnd’s geodomes, I nearly gasped. Floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over Lake Superior, surrounded by forests that seem to go on forever. At night, with no light pollution, the stars were so bright I could see the Milky Way without even trying.

What makes Sunnd special isn’t just the location – it’s how thoughtfully designed everything is. The wood-fired hot tubs (absolute heaven after a day of hiking) are heated using fallen timber. And the guided tours to ancient Indigenous pictographs taught me more about the area’s heritage than any museum could.

I spent three nights there, and will always remember waking up to mist rolling over the lake. One morning I spotted a moose drinking at the shoreline, completely undisturbed by my presence. That moment of connection with nature is what keeps pulling me back to places like this.

It’s ideal for solo travellers or couples who want to disconnect but still have cozy amenities (no roughing it required). And while it’s not dead cheap, the experience justifies every penny.

My advice is to book directly through Sunnd’s website rather than comparison sites – you’ll often get better rates. And do it early, especially for summer and autumn, as they’ve only got a handful of domes and they fill up quickly.

2. Darwin Ranch, Gros Ventre Wilderness, Wyoming, USA

Imagine rustic log cabins nestled in a Wyoming valley so remote you need a 4×4 just to reach it. That’s Darwin Ranch, where I spent what might have been the most transformative week of my life one summer.

Each morning began with freshly baked bread and locally roasted coffee before heading out for fly fishing in crystal clear streams. I’d never been on a horse before, but by day three, I was confidently trotting through alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers. The guides were brilliant – patient with beginners like me but also happy to challenge more experienced riders.

What I loved most was the evening meals. After a day in the wilderness, everyone – guests and staff alike – gathered around a huge wooden table for family-style dinners with food grown in their own gardens. The conversations flowed as easily as the local wine, and I made friends I still keep in touch with.

It’s not a budget option at around £575 per night all-inclusive, but for that you get accommodation, activities, and absolutely incredible food. It’s perfect if you want adventure without sacrificing comfort.

You’ll need to book 6-12 months ahead for summer spots. Trust me on this – I tried to extend my stay while I was there, and they were fully booked for the next two seasons.

3. Pater Noster, Sweden

Pater Noster, Sweden.

There’s something utterly otherworldly about staying on a tiny Swedish island where your only coordinates are longitude and latitude. Pater Noster sits on a craggy rock in the North Sea, and getting there is half the adventure.

I spent three nights there last September, and the first thing that struck me was the silence. Not just quietness – pure silence, broken only by waves and seabirds. My accommodation was minimalist in that gorgeous Scandinavian way, with sheepskin throws and huge windows framing the endless sea.

Days here aren’t about doing – they’re about being. I spent hours just watching the water change colour with the sky. Went fishing with the keeper and caught mackerel that we grilled for dinner. Read half a novel in a single sitting because there was nothing to distract me.

It’s the perfect place for solo travellers needing headspace or creative types looking for inspiration. I came home with more writing done than in the entire previous month in London.

Booking through their website gives you the best rates, but be prepared to be flexible with dates – there are only nine rooms, and the weather conditions sometimes mean arrivals must be rescheduled.

4. Acatenango Volcano Hike, Guatemala

Acatenango Volcano Hike.

One winter, I found myself huffing and puffing up the side of Volcan Acatenango in Guatemala, questioning all my life choices. But then night fell, and across the valley, Volcan Fuego began erupting – spewing bright orange lava into the dark sky every 20 minutes like clockwork.

I’m not going to lie, the 4-hour hike up was challenging. My quads were screaming, and the altitude had me taking breaks every few hundred metres near the top. But camping on the side of an active volcano, watching nature’s fireworks display while huddled around a campfire with newfound friends… worth every laboured breath.

The sunrise summit push was another challenge – a 5am wake-up call to climb the final stretch in the dark. But standing above the clouds as dawn broke over the landscape, with volcanoes poking through a cotton wool blanket of mist, was one of those moments that stays with you forever.

This one’s brilliant for budget travellers – tours run between £50-£100, including guides, equipment, and meals. Book through OX Expeditions in Antigua if possible; their guides are incredible and safety-conscious.

And for heaven’s sake, take warm layers! It gets so cold at the summit – I had five layers on and was still shivering.

5. Kinabatangan River, Malaysian Borneo

Kinabatangan River. Credit: Instagram @harry.r.taylor

Gliding down the Kinabatangan River at dawn, I held my breath as our guide cut the boat engine. There, just metres away, a wild orangutan was building its nest for the night, methodically bending branches into a comfortable bed.

Borneo’s wildlife encounters aren’t like your standard safari – they’re intimate, up-close, and often unexpected. During my three-day riverboat tour, I spotted proboscis monkeys with their comical noses, pygmy elephants bathing at the shoreline, and hornbills soaring overhead.

The eco-lodges along the river are basic but comfortable, with mosquito nets and cold showers that feel amazing in the humid heat. What they lack in luxury, they make up for in location – my balcony literally hung over the water, where I could watch crocodiles swimming past while sipping my morning tea.

This experience is perfect for wildlife lovers and photographers. The guides are passionate about conservation and know exactly where to find animals without disturbing them.

Book through Borneo Nature Tours at least three months ahead, especially if you’re travelling between March and October. And don’t scrimp on time – give yourself at least three days to really experience the river’s rhythms.

6. Mar y Aventuras Kayaking, Sea of Cortez, Mexico

Mar y Aventuras Kayaking. Credit: Instagram @rachillasyifaa

There’s nothing quite like paddling your kayak onto a deserted beach, knowing you’re the only humans for miles around. The Sea of Cortez in Mexico is one of the most biodiverse seas on the planet, and exploring it by kayak was an adventure I didn’t know I needed.

I joined a five-day expedition with Mar y Aventuras, camping on different beaches each night. During the day, we paddled through turquoise waters, stopping to snorkel with sea lions and tropical fish in what felt like our personal aquarium. Our guides knew every hidden cove and were brilliant at spotting wildlife – we saw dolphins, manta rays, and even a whale shark on my trip.

The best part was how accessible it felt. I’d never kayaked like this before, but after a thorough safety briefing and technique lesson, I was confidently navigating the gentle waves. And while the camping was basic, falling asleep to the sound of waves just metres from your tent is pure luxury in my book.

This adventure is brilliant value, with 5-day trips running £500-£800 including equipment, guides, and all meals (freshly prepared fish tacos on a beach? Yes please!). October through April offers the best weather – I went in November and it was perfect.

Time To See The World Off-Grid

If you’re feeling inspired to disconnect and have a proper adventure, here are my hard-earned tips:

Always book directly with operators where possible – you’ll often get better rates and more flexibility if plans change.

Small groups make for better experiences. I found trips with 8-12 people hit the sweet spot of social interaction without feeling crowded.

Most of these destinations book out 6-12 months ahead for peak seasons, so start planning now for next year.

Pack thoughtfully – I froze on Acatenango because I underestimated how cold it would get, and my camera died in Borneo because I didn’t have a proper waterproof case.

Choose operators with good sustainability credentials. The places I’ve mentioned all work hard to minimise their environmental impact and support local communities.

There is no point in waiting to see the world at its best. Pick one adventure from this list and start planning today. Your off-grid escape is waiting – swap your screen time for stargazing, wildlife encounters, and stories you’ll be telling for years to come.

You know that moment when you’re rushing through airport security, juggling your laptop, phone, and boarding pass while trying to yank your suitcase through the scanner? I had one of those mornings at Heathrow last month on a short hop to Madrid. Except this time, I wasn’t fumbling. My Level8 Grace let me grab my laptop from the front compartment in about three seconds, and the thing just glided through on its own while I sorted myself out.

Small win, but it set the tone for the whole trip.

That’s what pulled me towards Level8 in the first place. The brand’s been around since 2008, starting in the US with this clever MacBook compartment design that had something like 230 shock-absorbing points (bit excessive, maybe, but impressive). They’ve won a bunch of design awards – Red Dot, iF, IDEA – and even did a collab with Jay Chou’s fashion label PHANTACi back in 2018. Not bad for a luggage company.

Level 8 Grace Carry On

The Grace series feels like a natural extension of all that. It’s aimed at people who want something functional but stylish, without the eye-watering price tag of some of the fancier brands out there. I’ve been using the Grace EXT Expandable Carry-On (the 20-inch model) for a few months now, and I wanted to share what’s worked, what hasn’t, and whether it’s actually worth your money.

Quick specs: It’s an ABS+PC hardshell suitcase that expands up to 15%, has a front laptop compartment (fits up to 15.6″ screens), weighs around 8.5 lbs, and comes with a lifetime warranty. It’s also airline-compliant, which is always a relief when you’re trying to avoid checked baggage fees.

I’ve taken it to Amsterdam, a quick jaunt to Edinburgh, and a longer trip through Spain. So I’ve got a decent sense of how it holds up. Let’s get into it.

First Impressions

The suitcase arrived in a couple of days – free shipping to the UK, which was nice. Packaging was minimal, just enough to keep it safe without being wasteful. I went for the blue matte finish, and honestly, it looks more expensive than it is. The surface has this slightly textured feel that doesn’t show fingerprints, which I appreciate because I’m constantly grabbing it.

It’s light enough that I can lift it into an overhead bin without feeling like I’m at the gym, but it doesn’t feel flimsy. The expandable zipper sits flush when it’s not in use, so it doesn’t look bulky or weird. I spent a few minutes figuring out the TSA lock (the instructions were a bit vague), but once I set it, it’s been solid.

The front pocket was the first thing I opened, and I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical. I’ve had suitcases with front compartments before, and they usually feel like an afterthought—too shallow, awkward to access, that sort of thing. This one’s different. It’s padded, roomy enough for my 14-inch laptop, and has little pockets for cables and documents. I tried stuffing in a notebook, charger, and headphones alongside the laptop, and it all fit without feeling crammed.

Build Quality

The shell is made from ABS+PC, which is basically a blend of two plastics that are meant to be both lightweight and impact-resistant. I’ve knocked it around a fair bit – bumped it down cobblestone streets in Madrid, shoved it into tight train luggage racks, and watched baggage handlers toss it onto the carousel with zero care. So far, no cracks, no dents. There’s a tiny scuff on one corner from where I misjudged a doorway, but the matte finish hides it well.

I read someone’s post from a few years back about taking their Level8 Grace through Japan – four flights, multiple train rides, and it came out looking pretty much the same. That lined up with my experience. The shell’s sturdy without being heavy, which is the whole point really.

The wheels are another standout. They’re 360-degree spinners, and they actually spin smoothly. I’ve used suitcases where the wheels feel like they’re fighting you the whole time, but these just glide. They’re quiet too, which matters when you’re rolling through a hotel corridor at 6am trying not to wake everyone up. I did notice a bit of noise on rougher pavement – nothing terrible, just a slight rattle – but on smooth airport floors, they’re whisper-quiet.

The handle extends to multiple heights, and it feels solid. No wobbling, no awkward angles. I’m about 5’10”, and the highest setting works perfectly for me. My husband’s taller, and he didn’t have any complaints either.

Inside, the lining is thinner than I’d like. It’s functional – mesh pockets on one side, compression straps on the other – but I did get a small snag when I was pulling out a jacket a bit too quickly. Not a dealbreaker, but worth mentioning. The organisation is decent, though. I can separate clean clothes from dirty ones using the dividers, and there’s enough pockets to keep smaller items from floating around.

One thing I really appreciate is the lifetime warranty. I haven’t needed to use it yet, but I’ve heard from others that Level8’s customer support is pretty responsive. Someone mentioned getting a lock replaced within a week when theirs stopped working, which is reassuring.

Key Features

Expandable Design

The 15% expansion is genuinely useful. I didn’t think I’d use it much at first, but on my way back from Spain, I’d picked up a few bottles of wine (questionable decision, I know) and a ceramic bowl I couldn’t resist. The expansion gave me just enough room to squeeze everything in without having to rearrange the entire suitcase. It’s not going to turn your carry-on into a checked bag, but for last-minute additions, it’s a lifesaver.

Front Laptop Compartment

This is probably the feature I use most. Being able to access my laptop without unzipping the whole suitcase is such a small thing, but it makes security checks so much less stressful. There’s also space for documents, a pen, my passport—basically everything I need to grab quickly. I’ve seen a few reviews where people said this alone convinced them to buy the Grace, and I get it. It’s one of those features you don’t realise you need until you have it.

Wheels and Handle

I’ve already raved about the wheels, but they really do make a difference. I tested them on airport tile, hotel carpet, cobblestones, and even some dodgy pavement in Edinburgh, and they handled it all without much fuss. The only time they felt a bit clunky was on really uneven surfaces, but that’s to be expected.

The handle’s ergonomic, which is a fancy way of saying it doesn’t hurt your wrist after 20 minutes of pulling it around. I’ve had suitcases where the handle felt like it was positioned at a weird angle, but this one’s spot on.

Security

The TSA lock took me a minute to figure out, but once I did, it’s been reliable. I haven’t had to deal with customs opening it yet, but knowing they can do so without breaking the lock is a nice bit of peace of mind. The zippers feel sturdy too – no snagging or sticking, even when the suitcase is fully expanded.

Interior Organisation

The mesh dividers are thin but functional. They’re not going to keep a heavy coat from shifting around, but for lighter items, they work fine. The compression straps are good for keeping everything compact, which helps with the overall balance of the suitcase. There’s also a couple of velcro pockets that I use for socks and underwear, because why not.

Packing and Real-World Use

I packed this for a five-night work trip to Amsterdam: three shirts, two pairs of trousers, a jacket, trainers, toiletries, and my laptop setup. Everything fit in the main compartment with room to spare, and the front pocket held my work stuff. I didn’t need to expand it on the way there, but I did on the way back after picking up some stroopwafels and a couple of books.

The organisation system makes it pretty easy to keep things tidy. I put clothes on one side, shoes and toiletries on the other, and used the mesh pockets for smaller bits. The expansion zip is hidden along the sides, so you don’t notice it until you actually need it. When I did use it, the suitcase still fit in the overhead bin without any issues, though it was a tighter squeeze.

I also took it on a longer trip through Spain—five cities in two weeks. By the end, I’d definitely overpacked (shocker), but the Grace held up. No broken zippers, no busted wheels, no dents in the shell. It got knocked around quite a bit on regional trains, and it still looked fine.

What Works and What Doesn’t

What I Like:

The front laptop compartment is a genuine game-changer for work trips

It’s light but doesn’t feel cheap

The wheels are smooth and quiet on most surfaces

Expandable design gives you flexibility without adding bulk

Lifetime warranty and solid customer support

Looks sleek without trying too hard

What Could Be Better:

The interior lining’s a bit thin and prone to snags

If you’re a chronic over-packer, this probably won’t hold everything you want

The wheels can be a bit noisy on rough terrain

The front pocket does eat into the main compartment space slightly, though it’s worth the trade-off

Is It Worth It?

For the price, yeah, I think so. It’s not the cheapest carry-on out there, but it’s also not trying to compete with brands that charge twice as much for similar features. The build quality feels premium, the design’s thoughtful, and it actually makes travel a bit easier, which is the whole point.

It’s ideal for short trips – long weekends, business travel, that sort of thing. If you’re someone who needs to pack for two weeks in a carry-on, you might find it a bit limiting. But for most people, it strikes a good balance between capacity and convenience.

The front compartment alone makes it stand out from a lot of other suitcases in this price range. Add in the smooth wheels, expandable design, and lifetime warranty, and it’s a solid investment if you travel even semi-regularly.

Final Thoughts

I’m giving the Level8 Grace a strong 8.5 out of 10. It’s not perfect, no suitcase is… but it’s well-made, practical, and looks good while doing its job. I’ve used it enough now to know it’s not just a honeymoon phase. It’s become my go-to for short trips, and I can see it lasting for years.

If you’re in the market for a new carry-on, especially one that makes airport security less of a faff, the Grace is worth a look. Level8 offers free shipping to the US, Canada, and Europe, and their customer support’s meant to be decent if anything goes wrong.

Set out boldly, as they say. Just maybe don’t overpack quite as much as I do.
