Cardiff is one of my favourite cities in the UK. Why? Because it has an incredible cultural scene – and part of that is its food scene. Today I’m taking a look at what I consider to be the best restaurants in Cardiff.

This beautiful Welsh capital has way more to offer than just Welsh cakes and bara brith (though they’re lush too). Cardiff has so much to offer on the dining scene, especially in recent years.

After a few trips to Cardiff, I managed to eat my way around the cobbled streets to find the best in the biz. So whatever you fancy right now or plan on booking for that special occasion, take a look at the best restaurants Cardiff can offer.

I managed to get a table here for my friend’s birthday last month – had to book about six weeks ahead, mind you! The whole experience was just incredible. We went for the tasting menu, and honestly, I was blown away by the creativity.

There was this beef fat brioche that I still think about – sounds simple but it was utterly divine. And their desserts! I had this chocolate and sea salt creation that was just the perfect balance of sweet and savoury.

The staff really make the experience special too – they explain each dish without being snooty about it, and you can tell they genuinely love what they do.

It’s definitely a special occasion place (our bill came to about £180 for two with drinks), but for a birthday or anniversary, it’s worth every penny.

Serving times: Lunch and dinner Tuesday-Saturday

Dietary requirements: Meat-focused but they do have some seafood and veggie options

This place is fabulous, very good for any occasion but especially a date night and the likes. The place specialises in cooking over fire, and you can really taste the difference.

I went for the Galician blonde steak – it’s aged for longer than your typical steak and has this incredible depth of flavour. My other half had the whole baked fish which was cooked to perfection. Oh, and do NOT miss the patatas – they’re cooked in beef dripping and are sooo good!

The wine list is exclusively Spanish and the staff are really knowledgeable about what pairs well with your food. We took their recommendation on a rich Rioja and it was spot on.

If you’re going on a Friday or Saturday, definitely book ahead – this place fills up fast, and for good reason!

Dietary requirements: Not brilliant for veggies – it’s very meat-focused

Went here for my birthday dinner and the setting alone makes it worth a visit! It’s in an actual former bank vault underground, which gives it this amazing atmosphere – all exposed brick and moody lighting.

The food is quite meat-heavy (the clue’s in the name!), and their pork dishes are outstanding. I had these short rib croquettes to start that were packed with flavour, then the slow-cooked pork belly for main which was so tender it fell apart at the touch of my fork.

And if you like gin, you’re in for a treat – they have a huge selection and do some really interesting gin cocktails. I tried one with thyme and elderflower that was absolutely gorgeous.

Just a heads-up – it’s not the best choice if you’re vegetarian as options are limited. And being underground, there’s no phone signal, which can actually be quite nice for a proper catch-up without distractions!

Location: 27 High Street, Cardiff CF10 1PU

Serving times: Lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday

Dietary requirements: Great for veggies, gluten-free options available

This tiny family-run Italian is a Cardiff institution for good reason! Popped in for lunch with a friend last week and was reminded why I love it so much.

The place is absolutely tiny – maybe 10 tables max – and decorated with photos of the family’s Italian hometown. The wood-fired pizza oven takes up a good chunk of the restaurant, and watching them make your pizza right in front of you adds to the experience.

I usually go for their carbonara which is the real deal – just eggs, cheese, pancetta and black pepper. None of that cream nonsense you get in chain restaurants! But this time I tried their seafood linguine and it was packed with fresh prawns, mussels and squid in a light tomato sauce. (I’ve added a classic picture of their awesome pizzas though as this their ‘thing’.)

Be warned though – this place is ALWAYS busy and they don’t take bookings for less than 4 people. I’ve queued in the rain for a table before, but it’s always worth the wait!

Location: 4 Church Street, Cardiff CF10 1BG

Purple Poppadom

Menu: Modern Indian cuisine with a Welsh twist (around £25-35 per person)

Serving times: Dinner Monday-Sunday, lunch Friday-Sunday

Dietary requirements: Excellent for vegetarians and vegans

Had a takeaway from here during lockdown and was amazed how well the flavours travelled – so much so that I booked a table as soon as they reopened!

This isn’t your typical curry house – the chef takes traditional Indian dishes and gives them a modern, sometimes Welsh-influenced twist. Their signature sea bass with mango sauce is absolutely to die for – perfectly cooked fish with this sweet, tangy sauce that has just the right level of spice.

Last time I visited, I tried their tasting menu, which is a great way to sample lots of different dishes. The lamb dish with chocolate and chilli sauce sounds weird but works brilliantly!

The restaurant itself is lovely – modern and stylish without being pompous. And the service is always spot on – they really know their menu and can recommend dishes based on what you like.

Location: 185a Cowbridge Road East, Cardiff CF11 9AJ

Dietary requirements: Vegan options available

Finally made it here a couple of months ago after hearing so much hype, and I’ve got to say – it lived up to expectations! The place started as a pop-up during lockdown and now has its own permanent spot.

The menu is focused on a few different types of ramen, all made with proper care – the broths simmer for hours and the noodles have the perfect bite to them. I went for the tonkotsu ramen which has this incredibly rich, porky broth topped with chashu (braised pork belly), a soft-boiled egg, and all the traditional trimmings.

Yes, £16.50 for a bowl of soup and noodles might seem steep, but when you taste the depth of flavour in that broth, you understand why. The portion size is generous too – I was absolutely stuffed!

It’s not the place for a quiet, romantic dinner – the vibe is lively and you might be seated at communal tables. But for a casual meal with friends it’s spot on.

Location: 101 Clare Road, Cardiff CF11 6QP

I absolutely love nipping into Cardiff Market for lunch when I’m shopping in town. The food stalls here have undergone a bit of a renaissance in recent years, and now you can get some amazing grub for under a tenner.

My go-to is Ffwrnes for pizza – they do these incredible sourdough pizzas cooked in a proper wood-fired oven. Their ‘Cymru’ pizza with Welsh rarebit topping is a clever fusion that actually works!

Tukka Tuk’s Indian street food is another fave – their butter chicken wrap is messy to eat but so worth it. And Thai Asian Delish does the most amazing pad thai that’s as good as anything I’ve had in Thailand.

The best bit? Head upstairs to the balcony seating area and you can people-watch while enjoying your food. Just bear in mind the market closes at 5pm, so it’s lunch only!

Discovered this place through a friend who lives nearby and it’s now a regular haunt! It started as a street food stall and was so popular they opened a permanent restaurant.

Their specialty is roti – this flaky, buttery Thai flatbread – paired with various fillings. The sticky beef roti is mind-blowing – tender beef in this sweet, sticky sauce wrapped in the flaky bread. Another one that’s messy to eat but absolutely worth it!

They also do fantastic small plates – the Thai fried chicken with sriracha mayo is ridiculously good, as are the salt and pepper squid.

Prices are really reasonable – you can have a real feast for about £15 per person. The place is small though, so you might need to wait for a table at peak times.

When I’m craving sushi in Cardiff, this is my go-to. It’s a bit unexpected to find such good Japanese food in a shopping centre, but don’t let the location put you off!

The sushi is really fresh and well-made – I usually go for the mixed nigiri set which gives you a good variety to try. Their dragon rolls are also excellent – prawn tempura topped with avocado and a spicy mayo that gives it a nice kick.

I’ve noticed the quality can vary a bit depending on how busy they are, but when they’re on form, the sushi is as good as any I’ve had in London.

It’s perfect for a shopping break lunch, and prices are reasonable for sushi – expect to pay around £15-20 for a decent-sized meal.

This has got to be one of the most unusual restaurants I’ve ever been to! It’s staffed by prisoners who are training for careers in hospitality when they’re released. I was a bit unsure what to expect, but was blown away by both the food and the service.

Had lunch here with my mum a few months back and tried their sea bass – it was cooked to perfection with a crispy skin and served with a lemon butter sauce that was just divine. Mum had the chicken supreme and said it was one of the best chicken dishes she’s had.

The service was absolutely impeccable – actually better than many high-end restaurants I’ve been to. The whole concept is brilliant – giving prisoners practical skills while also providing affordable fine dining for the public.

Just two things to note – you need to book well in advance, and it’s alcohol-free. But seriously, the food is so good you won’t miss the wine!

The atmosphere is what makes this place special though – it’s vibrant, a bit chaotic, with Mexican wrestling masks on the walls and great music. Perfect for a night out with friends rather than a quiet, romantic dinner!

Practical Tips for Dining in Cardiff

If you’re new to Cardiff or just visiting, here are some quick pointers to help you navigate the food scene:

Location Guide: Most of the best independent restaurants are in the city centre, Pontcanna or Canton. These areas are all easily accessible by bus, and taxis are plentiful too. Cardiff Bay has some decent options but is dominated by chains.

Budget Planning: For budget eats, Cardiff Market is your friend – you can get a great lunch for under £10. Mid-range places like Cafe Citta or Brother Thai will set you back £20-30 per person. For special occasions, expect to pay £40-80 per head at places like Heaney’s or Asador 44.

Booking Advice: Always book ahead for Heaney’s, The Potted Pig and Cafe Citta – especially at weekends. Places like Cardiff Market and more casual spots don’t take bookings.

Timing Tips: The market closes at 5pm, so it’s lunch-only. For the more upscale restaurants, booking for 7:30-8pm means you’ll get the best atmosphere.

Ciniawa Hapus!

So that’s my personal guide to eating out in Cardiff, no matter what you fancy or how much you want to spend.

Just remember that the really popular spots like Heaney’s and Cafe Citta book up well in advance, so don’t leave it to the last minute if you’ve got your heart set on somewhere special!

Standing on the summit of Snowdon at sunrise is one of my favourite memories of Wales.

The mist was clearing and gradually revealing a panoramic view of Welsh mountains, lakes, and coastline. And even though the kids were half-asleep, even they couldn’t help but look in awe. That’s the thing about North Wales – it’s simply stunning, and every generation can appreciate it one way or another.

This rugged corner of Britain is absolutely brilliant for families, and not just because of the dramatic mountains and golden beaches. It’s the sheer variety that makes it special – one minute you’re exploring medieval castles that’ll make your kids’ history lessons come alive, the next you’re zipping through slate caverns on the world’s fastest zipline.

This isn’t your standard guide to North Wales. It’s genuine family adventures that combine those iconic must-sees with places you might not have caught onto yet. A cheat sheet to North Wales adventures that’ll you’ll all remember for years to come. In fact, we love North Wales so much, we have a family house just outside of Harlech, so we’ve seen our fair share of sunny, wet and wonderful days out with the kids in North Wales.

From underground trampolines to steam trains chugging through stunning valleys, these experiences offer unforgettable moments, plus some practical tips from someone who’s been there (often with cranky children in tow), and genuine insights to inspire your own Welsh adventure.

Welsh Outdoor Adventures

North Wales is a natural playground that’ll have your kids actually forgetting about their tablets. I was genuinely shocked when my 12-year-old didn’t mention Minecraft for an entire weekend.

Zip World

Zip World Penrhyn. Credit: Instagram, @picniq.uk

Let me tell you about Zip World. My kids still talk about Velocity 2 – it’s the world’s fastest zipline, and yes, it’s as terrifying and exhilarating as it sounds. You’re literally flying face-down over a bright blue quarry lake at Penrhyn Quarry. The views are insane, though I admit I might’ve had my eyes closed for half of it.

And then there’s Bounce Below – enormous trampolines suspended in an underground slate cavern. It’s as bonkers as it sounds. We spent two hours bouncing between levels connected by slides and netting, and you have to walk through a dripping cave to get to them – it’s bizarre, and so fun.

Just a word of warning: book way in advance. We made the mistake of trying to rock up on a summer Saturday and got turned away. Not my finest parenting moment, that one.

Snowdonia National Park

“Do we have to walk?” is the usual response when I mention mountains, but Snowdonia offers options for even the most walking-averse children.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway is brilliant for families. Yes, it’s a bit pricy (around £35 for adults, £25 for kids), but watching the landscape unfold as you chug up Wales’ highest peak is properly special. My youngest was absolutely convinced he spotted a dragon near the summit. And who am I to say he didn’t?

Snowdon Mountain Railway. Credit: Instagram, @snowdonmountainrailway

If your family actually enjoys walking (lucky you), the Watkin Path has some gorgeous sections that are manageable for kids. We only did the first third with our lot (ages 7 and 10), but even that gave us stunning waterfalls and brilliant views.

And don’t miss the story of Gelert’s Grave in Beddgelert – a heartbreaking tale of a faithful hound that had my kids silent for a good five minutes. That alone was worth the trip.

Beaches That Rival the Med (When the Sun’s Out)

When we got a rare sunny day in Llandudno, I nearly checked we hadn’t accidentally driven to the French Riviera. The Victorian pier is real old-school British seaside – all penny arcades and ice cream stalls.

Anglesey has some gorgeous beaches too. We spent a day at Cemaes Bay where the kids built sandcastles while I dozed off (parent win). The shallow water is brilliant for paddling with little ones.

Barmouth beach is another one that might surprise you. The beach is massive, so even in summer you can find your own patch. The water stays shallow for ages, which was perfect for our anxious swimmer. If you want a quieter but equally impressive beach then why not check out nearby Benar beach – which in my opinion is even better and doesn’t have the crowds you find at Barmouth.

History Stuff That Doesn’t Feel Like School

History in North Wales isn’t the dusty, boring nonsense from textbooks – it’s knight-and-dragon territory that sparks kids’ imaginations.

Castles That’ll Make Their Jaws Drop

I stood in the main courtyard of Caernarfon Castle watching my kids run around pretending to be knights, and it hit me that no history lesson could ever compete with this. The UNESCO World Heritage castles in North Wales are absolutely mind-blowing.

Conwy Castle lets you walk the entire town walls – my 7-year-old counted every single tower (there are 21, apparently) while my 10-year-old was obsessed with the murder holes. Slightly concerning, but at least they was learning.

Beaumaris on Anglesey is another gem with proper moats and everything. The kids spent hours playing hide and seek in the passages and towers. And I got to pretend I was in Game of Thrones for a bit. Everyone’s a winner.

Llangollen Railway

If you’ve got train-obsessed little ones, Llangollen Railway is a must. The 10-mile steam train journey through the Dee Valley is gorgeous. The old-fashioned carriages will have kids absolutely mesmerised, and the views along the River Dee are stunning.

We packed a picnic and hopped off at one of the stations along the way for lunch by the river. Just be sure to check the timetable so you don’t miss the return train – a mistake I may or may not have made, resulting in a very expensive taxi ride.

Portmeirion: Italy Without the Flight

Portmerion.

Portmeirion is weird but wonderful – an Italian-style village plonked on the Welsh coast. It’s colourful, quirky, and completely different from anywhere else in Wales.

The kids loved running through the exotic gardens and spotting all the different coloured buildings. I spent most of the time trying to get an Instagram-worthy shot, but the place is so pretty it’s hard to take a bad photo.

Rainy Day Rescues (Because Let’s Be Honest, It Will Rain)

Let’s not sugarcoat it – North Wales isn’t known for its Mediterranean climate. When we visited last Easter, it rained for four days straight. But don’t worry, there are plenty of indoor options to save your sanity.

The Fun Centre: Energy-Burning Heaven

The Fun Centre in Caernarfon was our rainy-day saviour. The 25ft drop slides had my kids (and, ahem, their dad) screaming with delight. The laser games were a hit with our 10-year-old, while the soft play kept the little one busy for hours.

It’s nothing fancy – definitely no Center Parcs – but when it’s pouring outside and the kids are climbing the walls of your holiday cottage, it’s absolute gold.

King Arthur’s Labyrinth: Underground Magic

King Arthur’s Labyrinth. Credit: Instagram, @kingarthurslabyrinth

We stumbled across King Arthur’s Labyrinth in Corris completely by accident, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. You board a boat that takes you underground through dark tunnels while storytellers share Welsh myths and legends.

The underground setting makes it so atmospheric, and even my usually-skeptical older one was captivated. There’s an outdoor maze too if the rain stops.

Stone Science: Dinosaurs and Crystals

Stone Science on Anglesey is tiny but fascinating. A dinosaur-obsessed child will think they’re in heaven examining the fossils and crystals. It’s small but packed with interesting stuff, and the owners are clearly passionate about their collection.

It won’t take up a whole day, but combined with a café lunch and maybe the nearby Sea Zoo, it fills a rainy afternoon nicely.

Unique Bits That Make Great Memories

These are the places that might not make the tourist brochures but created some of our best family memories.

Manorafon Farm Park: Not Just Your Average Petting Zoo

Manorafon Farm Park near Abergele was a lovely surprise. Yes, there are the usual farm animals to feed, but there’s also a dinosaur trail that had the kids racing from one model to the next.

We spent a good four hours here, and it’s right near Gwrych Castle (the one they used for I’m A Celebrity during COVID), so you can combine the two for a full day out.

Welsh Mountain Zoo: Small But Mighty

The Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay isn’t London Zoo, but that’s part of its charm. It’s compact enough that little legs can manage it, but still has impressive animals like tigers and snow leopards.

The penguin parade was the highlight for us – my kids still do impressions of the penguins waddling after the keeper. And the views over the bay from the zoo are pretty spectacular too.

Water Adventures: Splash and Paddle

Llyn Padarn. Credit: Instagram, @maddy_aspinall

We tried kayaking on Llyn Padarn near Llanberis, and it was brilliant. The tandem kayaks meant we could all enjoy it without worrying about anyone capsizing. The mountain backdrop makes it feel even more adventurous even though the lake itself is relatively calm.

Llangollen offers white water rafting if your kids are a bit older and/or braver. I’ve pencilled that in for a few years’ time when my nerves might be ready for it.

Practical Bits That’ll Save Your Sanity

A few things I wish someone had told me before our first North Wales adventure:

The weather is completely unpredictable, even in summer. Pack raincoats, sunscreen, and everything in between. I think we experienced four seasons in one April day.

Book the popular attractions (Zip World, Snowdon Railway) weeks in advance, especially in school holidays. Driving miles only to find everything fully booked robs an entire day from you all.

If you’re on a budget, there are loads of free options – beaches, mountain walks, and even some castle grounds can be explored without tickets.

GreenWood Family Park is brilliant for kids with mobility issues – they’ve really thought about accessibility.

The National Eisteddfod in August is worth experiencing if you’re around – it gave our kids a real taste of Welsh culture and language.

Worth Every Mile

North Wales might not have the guaranteed sunshine of the Med or the polish of Center Parcs, but it offers something more valuable – real adventures that stay with your family forever.

Whether you’re zipping over quarries, exploring ancient castles, or simply building sandcastles on a beach with Snowdonia as your backdrop, North Wales delivers the kind of experiences an entire family can enjoy and remember for years and years.

New Quay is a lovely, little town in Cardigan Bay, which was once a flourishing fishing port. It has no less than three beaches and all are beautiful but very different so you’ll definitely find something to suit everyone.

How To Get To New Quay

New Quay sits between Aberystwyth and Cardigan, right in the middle of Cardigan Bay. Whether travelling from Cardigan, in the south, or Aberystwyth, in the north, it is easily accessible from the A487 (coast road).

From Cardigan it is about a 40 minute journey mainly along the A487 and then turning left onto the B4342 which takes you into the centre of New Quay.

When travelling from Aberystwyth it takes about 50 minutes, again on the A487, and you then turn right onto the B4342.

There are a few car parks to choose from in New Quay, and on a busy day, in the height of the summer season, they can get quite busy. Our favourite when visiting was Church Road car park which is quite large and just on the outskirts of the town centre. You follow the road the car park down hill past a few shops and cafes before you reach the sea front, an easy walk on the way down but a bit more challenging on the way back up.

New Quay Beaches

New Quay has three separate beaches, all with their own appeal and character. From the wilder Traeth Gwyn to the busier Harbour Beach there is something to suit everyones tastes.

Harbour Beach

Harbour Beach has lovely, soft golden sand and sits between the harbour wall and the cliffs, so it is really sheltered even on some of the windiest days (we felt it was a few degrees warmer as soon as our feet hit the sand). It has been given The Blue Flag Award making it an ideal spot for taking a dip in the sea and there is a lifeguard service from June to September.

From the beach you can see little boats bobbing up and down in the harbour in one direction and in the opposite direction Traeth Gwyn, with Llanina woods in the distance. Quite a unique spot, with such clean and calm water for the kids to play in.

The beach is only a short walk from the main town down a ramp, past some public toilets which were well maintained and extremely useful on a family day out. There is a cafe on the beach itself where you can buy hot and cold drinks, snacks and any beach paraphernalia you may have forgotten to bring.

Dogs are not permitted on this beach from 1st May to 30th September, however both of the other beaches allow dogs all year round.

Dolau Beach

Dolau beach can be found on the other side of the harbour wall and is a much smaller beach. This beach is made from rocks, pebbles and coarser sand than harbour beach. The atmosphere here was much quieter, and there was more space for kids and dogs alike to have a good run around. We also noticed, when we were there, that the waves seemed better for bodyboarding as it is less sheltered.

Traeth Gwyn

Traeth Gwyn is the long stretch of sand (about a mile) that runs from Harbour Beach, all the way up to Llanina point. At low tide it is a wide swathe of sand backed by shingle and boulders but at high tide it can become cut off. It’s a popular place for dog walkers and if you take a stroll along this section you are likely to be following in the footsteps of Dylan Thomas, who lived in New Quay from 1944 to 1945.

New Quay Town

New Quay is a pretty little town that was originally a bustling fishing port. It still has a small harbour, which is home to small fishing vessels and pleasure boats. The town itself is mainly centred around the harbour and the main street leading away from the harbour, where you will find a selection of cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops. Perfect for whiling away an hour or two wandering round and stopping for some refreshment.

The Lime Crab sits right by the harbour and offers up fish and chips with a twist. As well as your normal cod and chips, you can get a seafood plater, mango chilli prawns and vegetarian and vegan options. Even better, this chip shop serves cold beers, ciders and wines to accompany their tasty fare. If you’re lucky you can grab an outdoor table with a view over the harbour.

On the opposite side of the road are a selection of cafes including an amazing ice cream parlour called Creme Pen Cei which serves up a massive selection of different flavours catering for all dietary requirements (even doggy ice cream!). When we visited there was a queue all the way down the road but it was definitely worth the wait.

If you’re enjoying your time on the beach and just want to grab a quick snack then Pasty Pasty is a great option. They have a range of interesting fillings such as breakfast pasties, vegetable curry, chicken and chorizo, just to mention a few. They also serve delicious barista coffee to wash it down with…..in my mind the perfect beach combo.

Activities In New Quay

Water sports

Harbour beach is home to Cardigan Bay Watersports, where you can go paddle boarding, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing and water skiing. You have the option to book a taught session or simply hire the equipment if you are already an expert.

Boat Trips

If you want to go out on the water, but aren’t feeling that energetic or adventurous, then there are a few different boat trips you can book from New Quay. These include dolphin spotting trips where you can try and catch a glimpse of some of the many dolphin pods that live in Cardigan Bay.

Crabbing

Crabbing is a favourite pass time of many children, and adults alike, and can provide hours of entertainment for little cost. If you haven’t already got your crabbing gear then a few of the shops in town sell crabbing nets, buckets and bait. We never normally have much luck with crabbing but New Quay was our most successful crabbing expedition to date. It was also a lovely place to sit, dangling our legs off the harbour wall in the afternoon sunshine.

Why We Love New Quay

New Quay is a cute little town with three brilliant beaches. It is big enough to have a mooch around, looking in the cute little shops and stopping for a drink or snack in the many cafes. The Harbour Beach, nestled behind the harbour wall and under the terraces of the town, is the perfect place to sunbathe, build sandcastles and splash in the sea knowing that all the facilities you need are only a stones throw away.

Ceredigion is a beautiful corner of Wales that has gorgeous beaches to suit everyone’s tastes. Find out which are our top 3 and discover why they’re our favourites.

1 – Llangrannog Beach

Llangrannog beach has it all – beautiful golden sands, picturesque setting, plenty of pubs and restaurants and lots of parking options. What attracted us to visit Llangrannog was the potential to try out some body boarding, as it is well know for having decent surf. When we arrived we found it also has lots of other attractions which make it perfect for families.

There is a free carpark about half a mile away from the beach, which has a park and ride option in the summer months, or a smaller car park right next to the beach.

The beach itself wasn’t overcrowded and had plenty of soft, golden sand for us to set up camp on and there are cliffs on either side offering some protection on windier days. May to September the beach is lifeguarded making it a safe place to enjoy the water, whether you’re into bodyboarding, surfing, paddle boarding or simply swimming.

There are pubs, restaurants and cafes, which cater for everybody’s needs, right next to the beach offering up anything from homemade pub grub to delicious ice creams and milkshakes.

It even has a secret hidden beach that you can only get to at low tide.

2 – Mwnt Beach

Mwnt beach is a beautiful golden, sandy cove with a gorgeous back drop of cliffs and rolling green hills. The real pull of this beach is its remote and peaceful setting. It is well known as a great place to spot dolphins and within an hour of arriving we were delighted to spot a group of 3 dolphins playing nearby in the bay.

It is owned by the National Trust so if you are a member parking is free, otherwise there is a daily charge of £5. From the car park it is a short walk across the road and down some steps to get to the beach.

As you walk down to the beach, the view is simply stunning. There is plenty of room on the soft sand to find the perfect spot for the day and the shallow water and pools created by the stream make it a great place for kids to play.

There are less food options here than Llangrannog, but there is a kiosk selling great coffee, hot and cold snacks and ice creams with a view.

3 – Penbryn Beach

Penbryn beach is also owned by the National Trust and is a lovely mile long stretch of powdery, soft sand which is sheltered by the nearby woodlands. It is a gently sloping beach so is a great place for a swim but beware, there is no life guard service.

Over the years it has won many awards for its cleanliness and is a beautiful spot for sunbathing, sandcastle building or a game of beach cricket. There is a cafe nearby called The Plwmp Tart, which has indoor and outdoor seating and offers a range of hot and cold food and drinks, with delicious homemade cakes.

How To Get To Aberaeron Beach

Arriving By Car

Aberaeron sits on the stretch of coast between New Quay and Aberystwyth, and the A487 (coast road) runs through the outskirts of the small town. As you approach, you will see the brightly painted houses along the main road (leading to it being know in our family as the rainbow town).

There are three car parks in Aberaeron. One to the south of the harbour which only has about 8 spaces. The other two are north of the harbour nearer to the beach itself.

Regent Street car park is the first you will come to and is only a short stroll from the beach. It has plenty of room and handily has four electric vehicle charging points.

The final car park is along the sea front and is only a 5 minute walk to the harbour. This car park has toilets located nearby and also has great views from your car if the weather isn’t too good.

All car parks are pay and display and offer you the option to pay by card.

Arriving By Foot

Aberaeron sits on the coastal path, and is only 6.5 miles from New Quay. This section of the coastal path is quite an easy walk with no major challenges. When the tide is out, it’s possible to walk along the beach between New Quay and Llanina point, a favourite walk of Dylan Thomas when he lived in the area.

Aberaeron Beach

Aberaeron beach isn’t quite as pretty as some of the other beaches on this coastline but offers lots of options for sports and nature lovers. It is a favourite spot for sailing, fishing, experienced surfers and birdwatchers alike. For our family, its appeal was that it was really quiet and offered the perfect spot for perfecting their stone skimming skills and the time old favourite activity of clambering over rocks. As the beach is west facing it is a great place to watch the sunset over the sea while enjoying an evening stroll.

Aberaeron Town

Aberaeron was built around a Georgian square in 1805. These beautiful period properties are painted in bright colours which give the town a vibrant feel even on a dull winter’s day. The different colours were not merely decorative but in the past they had a very practical purpose. They were to help the sailors quickly identify their home when returning from fishing trips.

These characterful buildings surround the harbour, interspersed with cafes, craft shops and restaurants. Its a charming place to wander round after you’ve visited the beach and there are lots of places to grab a drink or a bite to eat.

There is also a large park with a playground to keep the little ones entertained for half an hour.

Eating Out In Aberaeron

Aberaeron is well known locally as the place to go for quality food in a stunning setting. There is a host of different food options, from cosy cafes to high end restaurants.

On our first trip to Aberaeron we visited the Harbourmaster which sits (as is suggested by the name) right alongside the harbour, facing west to catch the last rays of sun on a summer’s day. It has a lovely terrace to the front of the building overlooking the harbour, which is the perfect spot to sip on sundowners.

We were seated inside, with views of the boats bobbing up and down in the harbour and the sun shinning through the large picture window. We all found something that we enjoyed on the menu, which is locally sourced, with a selection of dishes featuring Cardigan Bay shellfish and fish, Welsh lamb and beef, Ceridigion cheese and organic vegetables. The food was delicious and the atmosphere and staff were lovely.

As we loved Aberearon so much, we returned later in our holiday to sample the food at The Hive, a bright orange restaurant that sits right next to the harbour. The Hive offers a range of small plates which can be ordered tapas style or larger meals. The food again was delicious and the setting was cosy and intimate with fairy lights twinkling as the sun set.

The Hive also serves its famous honey ice cream from a kiosk outside which is irresistible on a hot day.

Y Seler is a high end restaurant that also has a large terrace with comfy seating and great views, situated right in the middle of the harbour. We didn’t eat here, but had drinks sitting in the sunshine on the squishy sofas. The menu looked amazing but not as child friendly as some of the other places nearby which is the only reason we gave it a miss.

Llangrannog, is not only a pretty, sandy beach nestled between craggy cliffs near the Ynys Lochtyn peninsular, it is also a popular destination for bodyboarding and surfing, as well as other water sports. The village itself is picturesque and offers all the facilities you need for a family day out.

How To Get To Llangrannog Beach

Arriving By Car

Llangrannog Beach is situated half way between New Quay and Aberporth, it is clearly sign posted from the A487 (the main coast road). You then follow winding country lanes towards the village of Llangrannog. Beware as you get closer the lanes get narrower and harder to navigate.

It takes about 25 minutes from New Quay and only about 20 minutes from Aberporth to get to this gorgeous little beach.

When you arrive there are two options for car parks. There is a small car park, right next to the beach, where you can pay by cash or through an app (however the signal is very poor in the area so makes using the app tricky!). There are horror stories online of people being fined as they took too long to pay by the app as there was no reception.

The other option is a free car park about half a mile away from the beach on the B4334. This is a large grassy car park with plenty of spaces, which also offers a park and ride service in the summer months.

We parked in the free car park and strolled down to the beach with all our bodyboards and other beach equipment, as we had read about the beach car park being over priced and often not accepting cash. However, the walk through the picturesque village was a lovely way to start our day.

Arriving By Foot

Llangrannog sits on the Ceredigion Coastal Path and the path leads directly down to the beach from Penbryn. In the other direction, the coastal path takes you to the Ynys Lochtyn peninsular which offers stunning, panoramic views.

Llangrannog Beach

The beach itself is a beautiful, golden sandy cove surrounded by cliffs, set into a lush green valley. It is a popular place for water sports including surfing, bodyboarding and kayaking. Along the sea front there are a few cafes and 2 pubs, so if you don’t fancy bringing a picnic there are lots of options.

The beach is lifeguarded daily from May to September (10am – 6pm) which makes it great for families, as you know your little ones are safe while enjoying the water. It also has public toilets close to the beach which is always important!

As well as water sports and the usual beach activities, there are also caves in the cliffs to explore and rocks to climb over (one of our families favourite pass times).

Village of Llangrannog

The village has all the facilities you need for a day out at the beach. A small shop selling beach supplies such as buckets and spades and fishing nets.

There is a family run ice cream parlour, Caffi Patio, which serves homemade ice cream, milkshakes, cakes, snacks and hot drinks.

The Beach Hut, is a small cafe and fish and chip shop, serving delicious food and drinks. It has indoor and outdoor tables overlooking the beach. Inside it is tastefully decorated, in keeping with its name, using upcyled and reclaimed furniture and beach paraphernalia.

There are two pubs The Ship and The Pentre Arms which are right next to the beach so you don’t have far to go for a refreshing pint or somewhere to warm up.

The Pentre Arms offers homemade food and a fully stocked bar in a stunning location. The most popular table has to be the one right next to the picture window, which has uninterrupted views of the beach and out to sea towards Ynys Lochtyn peninsular.

The Ship is a cosy place to eat and drink. It again offers a variety of homemade food in a homely environment and a wide range of drinks.

Cilborth Beach

Cilborth beach is a hidden beach, which can be accessed directly from Llangrannog beach at low tide and also via a steep set of steps that form part of the coastal path. A secret beach is always a treat, especially when its so close to the easily accessible Llangrannog beach. We love the sense of adventure and achievement when you manage to be one of the first people to walk round as the tide goes out.

Why We Love Llangrannog Beach

The biggest pull for us as a family is the opportunity to bodyboard, which both my girls absolutely love. Once in their wetsuits, they will spend hours in the sea – even in May when it was decidedly chilly. Llangrannog really reminds me of beaches we have visited in Cornwall but with out the crowds. We were able to easily find a table, with a sea view, at The Beach Hut without booking or waiting in a long queue. Not to mention that the food was homemade, delicious and had a slight twist on the normal chip shop fare. The large free car park was also a bonus, making it easy to park, as long as you don’t mind a walk. Overall, Llangrannog has something to please everyone, tasty food options, watersports, bracing cliff walks and golden sand to relax on.

How To Get To Mwnt Beach

Arriving By Car

From Cardigan, Mwnt Beach is an easy 15 minute drive starting on the A487 north and then following a series of pretty country lanes.

From New Quay, it takes about 40 minutes by car (but well worth the drive) heading south on the A487 before turning off onto country lanes for the remainder of the journey.

The car park is owned by the National Trust, so if you are a member parking is free. If not, it only costs £5 for the whole day.

Arriving By Foot

The Ceredigion Coastal path makes this beach easily accessible by foot and it is the perfect place to take a pit stop on longer walks, as it is well equipped with toilets and a cafe (outdoor seating only but amazing views!).

Mwnt Beach is accessed by a series of steps down to the golden sandy cove which is sheltered amongst steep cliffs. The calm waters and the large expanse of soft sand make it perfect for a family day out. A small stream runs to one side of the beach offering our youngest daughter hours of fun paddling, exploring and making dams with new found friends.

One of its main attractions is the possibility of seeing the native dolphins that live in Cardigan Bay. On our very first visit, only about an hour after arriving, we spotted a group of 3 dolphins playing in the in the calm waters of the cove. To our delight, they put on a bit of a show leaping in and out of the water entertaining everyone on the beach. You could hear a ripple of excited ‘ooos’ and ‘ahhhhs’ from their audience.

As we arrived by car we were prepared to make this a full beach day. The girls had plenty of space to build sandcastles, play bat and ball and enjoyed paddling in the gently lapping waters. Even though this beach is a really popular destination for families, it didn’t seem over crowded and we spent nearly an entire day here making a few trips back up the stairs to buy refreshments.

Facilities

As this is owned by the National Trust we found it had great facilities. There were toilets, a good sized car park and, the highlight for me, a kiosk that not only served ice creams but good quality coffee and a range of tasty snacks. There were also a few picnic benches nearby which had spectacular views over the cove. You could sit here and enjoy whatever you had purchased in comfort without getting it sandy.

History

Mwnt is an ancient holy site and has a 14th century chapel which served as a sailors’ chapel of ease. The Church of the Holy Cross (Eglwys y Grog) is simple yet beautiful and is definitely worth a visit while you are here. It also has a font which dates back to the 12th or 13th century when it was a refuge for pilgrims on their journey to St David’s.

Mwnt in Welsh means mound and the mound of earth, which forms the hill that over looks the sandy cove, is called Foel y Mwnt. Climbing to the top of the hill is a must, to enjoy the stunning panoramic views you get from the peak. As well as beautiful views of Cardigan Bay on a clear day you might get a glimpse of the Snowdonian mountains in the distance.

Wildlife

Mwnt is renowned as a great place to see bottle nosed dolphins but there is a lot more on offer for nature lovers. Basking sharks and porpoises have even been spotted here on occasion although, not as often as the dolphins and seals who are regular visitors to this gorgeous bay. In fact, during breeding season (August to December) mother seals and their pups can be seen on the rocks nearby and at times the National Trust closes the beach to the public to protect a mother and her pup from being disturbed – make sure you check the National Trust website before visiting!

The unique geology of the area, means that Foel y Mwnt is a perfect habitat for unusual plants and lichen. Also rare arable plants can be found in the surrounding fields.

Unfortunately, between 1st May and 30th September dogs are not permitted on any area of the beach. Also please be cautious when visiting with dogs during the seal breeding season so they do not disturb or upset mothers and their pups.

Why We Love Mwnt Beach

It’s not just our opinion that Mwnt is a spectacular beach in Cardigan Bay, it has been voted a top beach on countless occasions. The Daily Mail awarded it the title of one of “Europe’s top ten loveliest, hidden beaches” and I have to agree. It feels remote and peaceful set amongst beautiful scenery and has breathtaking views from every angle. However, it has great facilities, making it the perfect place for a family day out.

Cwmtydu Beach is a quiet, peaceful beach to the South West of New Quay, which even on a gorgeous sunny day doesn’t get overcrowded. It is also know as Seals Bay and you will often spot one of the 5000 seals that inhabit this part of the welsh coastline bobbing up and down in the sea or basking on the rocks. While gazing at the beautiful view, you may even be lucky enough to see one of the bottlenose dolphins that are also found in Cardigan Bay.

There is easy access to the beach by car and you will find a small car park right next to the beach, with room for about 15 cars. There is also additional parking just a few hundred metres down the road if this car park is full, next to the public toilets (always a bonus at a remote beach).

If approaching via the A487, Cwmtydu (sometimes spelt Cymtudu) is signposted and you follow a winding single track road for about 4 miles before reaching the car park.

When travelling from nearby New Quay, it is about a 15 minute drive starting on the A486 and turning right at Maen-Y-Groes which is signposted to Llangrannog. Cwmtydu is then signposted to the right on this road.

Arriving By Foot

Cwmtydu Beach can be easily accessed from the Ceredigion Coast Path and is popular with walkers due the beautiful views from the cliff tops. The coastal path leads down to Cwmtydu Beach along the wooded valley and then returns to the coast as it climbs back up towards New Quay.

We discovered this beach while staying at Glan yr Afon a beautiful thatched cottage in the little hamlet of Penbontrhydyfothau. From here, you follow a footpath through the wooded valley until you reach the Ceredigion Coast Path and the pretty cove of Cwmtydu. While in the area, we noticed a lot of holiday accommodation close by in this quiet corner of Ceredigion which would be perfect for future family holidays.

At Cwmtydu Beach

Cwmtydu Beach is a secluded cove whose beach is mainly covered in soft pebbles and shingle with a few small patches of sand peeping through in places. Perfect for sandcastle building, but we had not come prepared with buckets and spades, much to the dismay of our daughters. However, once they had kicked off their walking boots and cooled their feet down in the sea, we were forgiven as they tucked into a picnic while listening to the sound of the sea lapping on the shore and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. We were amongst only a few other people enjoying the beach!

After lunch, the kids enjoyed skimming stones while looking out for seals as Cwmtydu is one of their favourite haunts along this stretch of coast. We actually spotted a couple basking on the rocks nearby which made our day!

Cwymtydu is a popular place for fishing, offering a good selection of species such as flounder, plaice, dog fish, bass and gurnard. While we were there, we spotted a couple in a camper van who had caught some fish and were barbecuing it right there on the beach. That has to be the best way to enjoy your catch and we were extremely jealous as the delicious smell wafted our way as we ate our ham sandwiches!

If fishing isn’t your thing, there are lots of rock pools to explore as the tide goes out (one of our girls’ favourite activities whatever the weather) or you can clamber over the rocks and explore the caves. These caves are also a favourite spot for seals and their pups particularly in September and October when mothers may be returning from a fishing trip to feed their pups so be careful not to disturb them.

History

In the past the it was used as a smugglers’ hideout as it is so secluded. The smugglers often hid their booty of French brandy or salt in the caves cut into the cliffs that surround the beach.

On the coastal path close to the car park you will find one of the many lime kilns still in place along the Cardigan Bay coastline. Lime was used to enrich the soil and for building work so lime blocks were brought in by sea and were burnt in kilns like this to transform them into a usable form.

Why We Like Cwmtydu Beach

Above all this beach offers peace and tranquility in contrast with some of the busier beaches such as nearby New Quay Beach. Although it isn’t golden sand, it is a pretty little beach set amongst beautiful scenery surrounded by cliffs, caves, rolling green countryside and woodland.

We always love a beach that we can walk to, so when staying in Penbontrhydyfothau it was easy to get to on foot with two children. The path through the wooded valley was gorgeous with spectacular views as you approach the cove itself. If you haven’t got little ones in tow then there is also the option of extending the walk along the coastal path in either direction to enjoy more stunning views along the cliff top.

Having access to a family home near to Benar Beach has been a luxury I’ve enjoyed now for over 20 years. With our base being nestled in the sleepy village of Dyffryn Ardudwy, we can walk (if we feel energetic) or drive (if the kids are moaning) down to Benar Beach.

And it’s something none of us ever tire of. Babies, toddlers, tweens, teens and even those of us the wrong side of 40 – all enjoy a half day or full day trip to Benar.

Benar Beach is found on on the coastline between the popular seaside resort Barmouth and the historic town of Harlech which is famous for its castle that dates back to the13th century.

How To Get There

From Barmouth head along the cost road, through the small village of Tal-y-Bont and take the road on the left signed to the beach (traeth in Welsh).

The road is called Ffordd Benar and goes over the railway line, through fields and past campsites until you reach a small car park. Parking charges apply in the car park and it is patrolled by traffic wardens as my sister found out when she received a fine!

From Harlech, you again take the coast road and pass through a few lovely little villages. Dyffryn Ardudwy is the last village you pass through before you turn right onto the road signed to the beach.

Benar Beach Facilities

At the car park there are public toilets and if you walk to the nearby caravan site Dyffryn Seaside Estate you will find a small shop, fish and chip shop and a pub. These are usually open every day during peak times but check first as during the winter they are often closed.

Dogs

There are restrictions for dogs on this beach from April to September but there is a stretch of beach which is dog friendly all year round. There are signs when you reach the beach which tell you where you can go with your four legged friend.

The Board Walk

Right next to the car park there is a board walk which leads you through the dunes to the beach. As you walk along, watch out for brown hares hopping amongst the long grass which breed in this area.

The dunes are also home to a wide range of wildlife including grass snakes and great crested newts.

When you get to the end of the board walk and step out of the dunes you are greeted by a huge expanse of golden sand fringed with a small strip of pebbles.

Benar Beach and Beyond

Benar beach is part of Morfa Dyffryn, which is a designated area of special scientific interest. It is one of the most adaptable ecosystems in the UK with sand dunes that are constantly developing.

Sports

From Benar beach towards Barmouth you will often find people jet skiing, kite buggying, body boarding and occasionally surfing when the conditions are right.

During the summer months it’s a popular spot as there are lots of caravan sites nearby but the beach never seems overcrowded as it has such a vast expanse of golden sand.

Walks

If you carry on walking you can get all the way to Barmouth along the beach then stop off in one of the many pubs and cafes.

Personally, my favourite pub is the Last Inn which is right next to the harbour with an attractive outside space with beautiful views across the estuary. However, if you want a cafe then head to Davy Jones’ Locker which also sits right on the harbour and offers a great selection of hot and cold drinks and delicious food.

When you head right (or North) towards Harlech you will find the beach widens out even more – especially at low tide and you can walk as far as Shell Island. In this direction the views are just as breathtaking as towards Barmouth.

In all directions there’s stunning scenery, dunes, mountains and sea. If it’s a clear day you can see the Llyn Peninsular jutting out into the sea in the distance. However be aware the section of beach between Dyffryn Beach and Shell Island is a designated naturist beach.

We love to walk from Benar Beach along the the sea front to Dyffryn Beach and then head inland through the caravan park up to Dyffryn Ardudwy itself. Where you can find a couple of cafes, a post office and a shop with a small award winning butcher (who supplies many of the local restaurants) counter that sells excellent sausages amongst other tasty options!

From the village there are footpaths which take you back through a small wooded area, over a train track and back to the road where the carpark for Benar Beach is located.

Eating Nearby Benar Beach

When you’ve had enough of the beach and want to grab some food before returning home there are a couple of fantastic options nearby.

Heading back towards the village of Tal-y-bont you will find the Ysgethin Inn. A lovely riverside pub which offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere with great traditional pub food and a selection of local ales.

It has a seating area right next to the river with a small children’s play area to keep the little ones happy while you enjoy a drink listening to the river rushing by.

Another option is Norbar, which is on the main road back towards Barmouth. It sits elevated to the left hand side of the road giving it excellent views out to sea.

A perfect place to watch the sunset while sipping on a cold beer, glass of wine or cocktail.

Norbar has a more modern menu and offers pizza (made in their wood fired oven), pasta, seafood, burgers and more. Every time we’ve been the food has been delicious, service good and the decor is very fresh and modern. This combined with the spectacular views makes it one of our favourite places locally.

Why We Love Benar Beach

Benar Beach is truly stunning and offers hours of fun for the whole family.

With its mountain backdrop and miles of golden sand it takes my breath away every time we visit – and I must be getting close to three figures now.

When the children are bored of playing in the sea, building sandcastles or digging holes they then have the dunes to explore. Climbing up and sliding down is great fun!

There’s enough space even in the summer for each family to have a huge section of the beach for activities such as cricket, kite flying and playing ball without worrying about disturbing anyone. Once you’re set up for the day with a wind break and picnic blanket you won’t want to be any where else.

There is far more to Snowdonia than the mountain. And the national park. And the lakes. In fact, for an area in the UK that is renowned for so much beauty, it is still somewhat of a hidden gem. In this article, we are aiming to shine a little more light on this stunning area of Northwest Wales to help you discover what it has to offer.

Obviously the incredible natural scenery is a huge pull. The largest mountain in England and Wales, the craggy peaks, the views across the sea to Ireland, the waterfalls, the woodland – we’re barely scratching the surface here.

On top of that, though, is everything you can do in this region – the adventure capital. Whether you want to be zooming through the air on a zip wire, hike along one of the many trails, kayak in whitewater, explore the caves or have a round of golf, Snowdonia will have you covered.

And then there’s the history! With human activity in the area stretching back to the prehistoric era, you can see settlements dating back to 200 BC, plus Roman camps and castles galore. It’s an area steeped in history, right at the centre of fierce rivalries, and rife with many myths and legends.

There is so much to see and do, it could feel overwhelming, but don’t worry because we are here to help. Here are our top things to do in Snowdonia.

Snowdon Mountain Railway

We’ll kick things off with a classic Snowdonia attraction – the Mountain Railway. To put this simply, it is one of the most beautifully scenic railway journeys on the planet, and one that you should definitely take a trip on if you ever get the chance.

The thing is, though, that it isn’t just the scenery that is so impressive about this narrow gauge track – it’s the fact that this is a remarkable feat of engineering that has been taking tourists up to the summit of Snowdonia since the 19th century. A fact that is truly mind blowing.

The track is 4.7 miles long and reaches a height of 3,493 ft, with seven stations along the way. The total journey time from Llanberis, at the bottom, to the Summit Station is roughly an hour, and along the way you can enjoy the exquisite views that can stretch all the way to Ireland on a clear day.

Please note, though, that the Summit is only available between late Spring and the end of October. Outside of that time, you can travel as far as Clogwyn, which is about 75% of the way up.

You can even pick what fuel you would like to use to get you up there! There are two services that run – the Heritage Steam Experience, and the Traditional Diesel Service. Whichever you pick, you are in for a treat as you look down on the valleys below.

I would recommend booking in advance, though, as it can get busy during peak periods. Check out the weather forecast as well, as you get a much better experience when the sky is clear, and don’t forget to pack your camera.

Explore the Iconic Village of Portmeirion

A little piece of the Mediterranean nestled into North Wales, Portmeirion is a village unlike any other. Created and designed by the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis from 1925, it was built in the style of an Italian village – his objective was to see how a naturally beautiful site could be developed to enhance it, rather than spoil it.

It is a fascinating little place.

You could spend hours taking in the buildings set in this picturesque backdrop, but there is so much more to this village than just the architecture. There are some incredible restaurants, a superb spa and acres of woodland to explore.

There are two hotels in the village, The Hotel Portmeirion and Castell Deudraeth, which are both 4 star and both benefit from excellent service and attention to detail. On top of that, there are plenty of self-catering cottages there, so lots of choice if you decide that you want to make the most of your time there.

Our advice is to not make any plans for your time there, and just wander around. See where the day takes you – you might end up in the subtropical forest (with hidden lakes) or maybe you’ll find yourself at the Amis Ruins, the famous Stone Boat which you can only see when the tide is out.

This delightful little village is well worth your time. It’s a truly unique place, which stands as a monument to one man’s dream to bring the Mediterranean riviera to the Welsh coast. We’re very grateful that he did.

Take a dip in The Secret Infinity Pool

“Is it a secret if you include it in this article?” I hear you ask. Well yes, actually, because I am going to hold up my end of the unwritten bargain here by not revealing exactly where it is – that’s all part of what makes it such a magical place.

It cost £400,000 to build, a project that was undertaken by local farmer Wyn Mostyn Jones in 2016 as part of a green energy initiative. Over the years it has grown in popularity with tourists and locals alike, but if you want to find it for yourself, you’re going to have to put in a bit of effort to track it down.

What you will find when you get there is a magically serene setting…

Gentle running water and sounds of the wildlife are the only things you’ll hear, and the views of the surrounding area are simply magnificent. Time seems to stand still, but before you know it an hour has passed, and you slowly emerge from this dream-like tranquillity. It’s one of those experiences in life that you really just need to try out for yourself to fully appreciate it.

The only clue as to the location of Snowdonia’s Secret Infinity Pool that seems to be widely available is that it is on the Llanberis Pass, one of the most popular paths in the region.

That should narrow your search down a bit, but for the rest you are going to have to put in the work yourself. We would recommend looking at other people’s photos, have a look on Google Maps and search on YouTube for extra clues.

It’s such a fitting attraction for Snowdonia – adventure and tranquillity all rolled into one.

Hike Through Gwydir Forest Park

Right in the heart of Snowdonia National park is this idyllic forest park – all surrounding one of the prettiest villages in Wales, Betws-y-coed.

If you are starting out from the village, which we would urge you to do because the village is worthy of a place on this list in itself, then there is a choice of four different coloured trails to guide you through the forest – all with varying degrees of difficulty. There will be a path for you, whatever your experience and ability.

The paths range from a quick 30 minute walk (1.2 km) to a 3-5 hour hike (10.6 km, and a climb of 500m), but whichever one you choose you will be able to take in some incredible views, walk under majestic Douglas fir trees (some which are around 100 years old), and read some facts about the area that have been dotted around.

The most strenuous trek is well worth your consideration though, as you’ll get to walk around some stunning lakes and up to get some incredible views of the scenery below. The paths are less than a metre wide in some places, and conditions can get tough in wet weather, but if you are up for the adventure, then the peaceful atmosphere at the top of the climb is certainly worth it.

There is even an orienteering course there, so you can test your map-reading skills – just make sure that your relationship is secure before starting a course with your partner!

One of the best things about hiking around Gwydir Forest Park, though, is that you invariably end up back in Betws-y-coed where you can find yourself a lovely pub or cafe to reward yourself with a well-earned drink.

Visit Conwy Castle

Looming above the mediaeval market town of Conwy is Conwy Castle, one of the best-preserved castles of its kind in the world.

Built by Edward I in the late 13th century as a show of dominance over the rebellious Welsh, the castle remains one of the best examples of the period’s military architecture and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It really is quite remarkable how the castle has remained in such good condition in the centuries since it was built. Edward was known for his extravagance when it came to castles, but Conwy castle really is a testament as to how well built his castles were. It is a masterpiece, even if it didn’t fully do its job in uniting England and Wales – plenty of mountainous areas in North Wales remained out of his control.

There is so much history to discover at the castle, but even if that doesn’t interest you, the views that you have from there certainly will. It overlooks Conwy’s idyllic harbour and you also can look back at the Snowdonian peaks, as well as the 1.3 km wall that surrounds the town.

The castle has also been the setting for blockbuster movies – King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, starring Jude Law, was shot there, as well as 2020’s The Secret Garden. There really is something for everyone here.

Once you have spent time at the castle, be sure to go for a walk around the town. The whole town is packed full of historical buildings and landmarks, and with the river, harbour and beaches nearby, it’s a perfect location for a base for a Snowdonian holiday.

Delve into the Underground at Llechwedd Slate Caverns

Wales is a country with mining buried into its soul, and this rare opportunity to experience a trip 500 feet underground is not one to be missed. It is a tour that will stay with you long after you have returned to the surface.

The Deep Mine Tour at Llechwedd will walk you through the world of slate mining, which was so important to the area during the 19th and 20th centuries. You will be taken on an exhilarating trip up to the peaks of the site (on an ex-military truck), and en route you will be able to take in yet more stunning views of the surrounding Snowdonia landscape.

Then you’ll be led deep into the mine along Europe’s steepest narrow gauge railway, into the now-disused slate caverns. You’ll be told stories of the individual miners, as well as facts and information about the slate industry which was so important to the country.

It all culminates with a stunning light and sound display at the underground lake – a spectacle that needs to be seen to be believed. It’s a critical part of why the Llechwedd Slate Caverns have won awards as one of the best tourist attractions around.

We get that slate mining might not be the most exciting topic for everyone – largely because we felt the same when it was first suggested to us – but you need to trust us here, this is a thrilling attraction that you won’t regret visiting.

Go Below, with Go Below

The Llechwedd Slate Caverns that we have listed above are a great fun for all the family type of tourist attraction, that explores the industry and majesty of these incredible mines. But Go Below takes things up a notch…

Here, at Conwy Falls (just outside Betws-y-coed), you get to put yourself to the ultimate underground test involving zip lines, abseiling, boating, scaling waterfalls and climbing up vertical shafts. The kind of adventure that really gets your pulse tracing and your heart skipping a beat.

There are three different adventures to choose from, ranging from a 5-hour challenge, suitable for anyone aged 10 and up, to a 7-hour over 18s only extreme challenge with freefall jumps and the ‘goliath zip line’. This one is not for the fainthearted.

You can abseil down to the deepest point in the UK, guided by a friendly, experienced team of instructors that will make sure you are kept safe at all times. It’s the kind of activity that would be perfect for a stag do, but at the same time, ideal for anyone that loves a challenge.

They have also just constructed some underground cabins, so you can actually stay the night down there – 1375 ft below the surface, billed as ‘The Deepest Sleep In The World’.

This is the sort of once-in-a-lifetime experience that Snowdonia can provide. A slightly bonkers adventure, using a combination of nature and human industry to create something unique. If you like your trips with a bit of extreme adventure, this is the place for you.

Inland Surfing at Adventure Parcs

Surfing can be a frustrating pastime in the UK. The amount of time you need to wait to get the right conditions just means that it isn’t a viable hobby for 99% of the population that don’t have access to beaches on the right part of the coast. Even for those that do live near a great surfing beach, timing is everything.

Even though there are some truly spectacular beaches in North Wales, surfing is always difficult because the right kind of waves are very rare. So they have come up with a solution: Inland Surfing.

At Adventure Parcs, they have created a man-made lagoon which produces perfect waves every 90 seconds. This is done by an underwater snow plough, which runs along rails to create the pressure needed for the waves to materialise. The best thing of all, though , is that this can be fully controlled so that you can select which sort of waves you’d like to surf on.

There are four different levels: beginner, two intermediate levels and an advanced level. There is also an option to have lessons, so that you can learn from experts – it is the perfect environment to learn how to surf, rather than getting out in the sea and finding out that the waves are too rough or gentle for you to have a proper lesson.

Surfing is the type of thing that you can only learn by doing it, and here you can ensure you get plenty of waves to practice on.

If you have always wanted to get into surfing, but didn’t know where to start, let me help you out – start here at Adventure Parcs.

Just a quick note here – surfing is just one of the watersports available in Snowdonia. If you would like to try wakeboarding, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, canoeing, paddle boarding etc – Snowdonia is the place to head.

Strike Gold at Sygun Copper Mine

A change of pace now, as we look at the Sygun Copper Mine – another fascinating site that will help to illustrate the importance of the mining industry in the area.

This is a great day out for a family. The tours are self guided and you are permitted to explore on your own the winding tunnels and colourful chambers as you try to remember the difference between stalactites and stalagmites…! The copper ore ‘veins’ look magnificent in these perfectly lit caverns.

The mine has been disused since 1903, but this perfectly preserved mine gives you a direct look at what it would have been like during those busy Victorian years, a rare opportunity to experience this era.

While it is fascinating for guests of any age, there is plenty to do for children, with a playground, museum of antiquities, a metal detecting area and the opportunity to ‘Pan for Gold’.

The tour lasts about 40 minutes, and with the additional activities, it would make a nice activity for a family for a morning. We would suggest heading down to the beautiful village of Beddgelert when you are finished to get some lunch. It’s only three quarters of a mile down the road, and is picturesque with plenty of places to grab some lunch or a drink.

Climb Snowdon

Okay, we couldn’t write a list of things to do in Snowdonia and not include the most obvious one – it is, quite literally, the high point of any visit to the area.

There are six different paths to get you to the top: Llanberis Path, Pyg Track, Miners’ Track, Watkin Path, Rhyd-Ddu Path or the Snowdon Ranger Path, which all vary slightly in terms of distance and expected time to complete, but they all have the same difficulty rating which is ‘Hard/Strenuous’.

This is not a jolly little walk up a hill and back again – you are going to scale the biggest mountain in England and Wales.

You’ll need to allow at least 7 hours for the trip in total, and make sure you have prepared sufficiently – plan your route, wear comfortable/suitable clothing, have plenty of food and drink with you and make sure you tell someone about your trip so they can check on you.

Every year there are around 200 call outs for help from people that get into trouble up there.

This isn’t supposed to put you off, far from it, we include this to leave you with no uncertainty – climbing Snowdon is a proper adventure. The sense of achievement when you get up there is very real, and you are rewarded with some of the most incredible views in the UK.

There is plenty of information available to help you prepare for your trip, so use it and make sure you know what you’re doing and where you’re going. Then all you have to do is keep safe and enjoy one of the most incredible hikes in the UK.

Why we love Snowdonia

So there you have it, our list of things to do in Snowdonia.

Reading that, I am sure you have already seen why we love this region so much. Where else in the world could you visit a quaint disused copper mine in the morning, and then go inland surfing in the afternoon? Or have a mooch around a picturesque rural village on your way to an underground zip line?

It’s a region that brings together the modern and the past. Nature and man-made industry. Beauty and exhilaration. That’s why we love Snowdonia.
