There’s something about the Cotswolds that just makes food taste better. Luckily for me, I’m only an hour’s drive away from the honey-coloured buildings and the rolling hills that The Cotswolds is famed for.

Eating in The Cotswolds after a long country walk is one of my favourite ways to spend a weekend and as I’ve spent countless weekends exploring this gorgeous part of England, and having eaten at some of the finest establishments I think I’m well placed to give you my rundown on the best restaurants in The Cotswolds.

Last summer, I took my wife on what I called a “gastronomic tour” of the area and stayed in one of the best Cotswold hotels I’ve ever stayed in. She thought we were just going for nice walks and cute photos but five pounds heavier and several meals later, she finally admitted I was onto something with this whole Cotswolds food obsession.

So, whether you’re planning a weekend away or a proper holiday in this stunning corner of England, I’ve put together my absolute favourite places to eat. These aren’t just tourist traps, I hate those… these are the spots where you’ll find me elbowing locals out of the way for a table on a Sunday afternoon (sorry not sorry).

Old-School Pubs That’ll Make You Feel Properly British

Nothing says “I’m in the Cotswolds” quite like sinking into a creaky chair by a fireplace in a 400-year-old pub, pint in hand, waiting for a plate of something hearty and delicious. These traditional pubs have been feeding hungry travellers for centuries, and thank goodness they’re still at it.

The Falkland Arms, Great Tew

The first time I visited The Falkland Arms, I actually gasped. It’s so ridiculously picturesque with its thatched roof, ancient stone walls, and low-beamed ceilings that have definitely caused a few bumped heads over the centuries (including mine).

One crisp autumn day, I nabbed a corner table next to the fire and ordered their homemade steak and ale pie. Let me tell you, their pastry is the stuff of dreams – buttery, flaky, and wrapped around tender chunks of beef that had clearly been simmering for hours. I paired it with a local ale (when in Rome and all that), and it was absolute heaven.

The garden’s lovely too. Last summer I returned there watching the village life unfold while nursing a gin and tonic. The prices are decent as well, around £14-18 for main courses, which isn’t bad considering the portions could feed a small army.

Top tip: If you’re heading there on a weekend, get there early. The secret’s out about this place, and tables by the fire are hot property.

Our Favourite Places To Stay In The Cotswolds

The Green Dragon, Cowley

You know when you’ve been walking for hours and you’re absolutely starving? That’s exactly when you need The Green Dragon in your life.

I stumbled across this gem after getting slightly lost on a country walk (those old school OS Maps can be confusing). I was freezing, my boots were muddy, and I was contemplating calling a taxi back to my B&B when I spotted the pub sign.

Their Sunday roast is what dreams are made of and I say that as someone how makes a might fine roast myself. Yorkshire puddings the size of your head, crispy roast potatoes, and proper gravy that’s clearly been simmered for ages. They do a cracking vegetarian nut roast too, which my sister in law swears by.

The setting is gorgeous as well, there’s outdoor seating with views across the countryside, and friendly staff who don’t mind when you turn up looking like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards (which, in my case, wasn’t far from the truth).

The Swan, Broadway

Broadway is one of those Cotswold villages that looks like it’s been plucked straight from a film set, and The Swan fits right in with its historic charm.

I ended up here as part of my ‘gastronomic tour’. We’d spent the day shopping in Broadway’s cute independent shops and were in desperate need of refreshment. The Swan’s lively bar area was exactly what we needed, just busy enough to have atmosphere, but not so chaotic that we couldn’t hear each other talk.

Their fish and chips were spot on with a crispy batter, flaky fish, and proper chunky chips. Laura had the burger, which came with all the trimmings and had her making those inappropriate food noises that turn heads.

In summer, the garden’s brilliant for people watching with a cold beer or cider in hand. Prices hover around the £15 mark for main courses, and portions are generous.

The Bakers Arms, Broad Campden

I’ve got a soft spot for The Bakers Arms. It’s a bit off the beaten track, which means it’s not heaving with tourists taking photos of their ploughman’s lunch.

The garden is what sold me, it’s perfect for those rare sunny days when everything feels right with the world. I spent an entire afternoon there once, starting with lunch and somehow ending up staying for dinner too. The staff seemed to find this amusing rather than annoying, which says a lot about the place.

Their menu is full of pub classics done well – I’m particularly fond of their ploughman’s lunch, which comes with a wedge of local cheese that will haunt your dreams. The local ales change regularly, and they’re always happy to let you try before you buy.

You can also have small wedding receptions here. We saw a party take over the back room and I asked a guest about the food which he told me was faultless.

Fancy Places That Won’t Make You Feel Like a Plonker

Sometimes you want to push the boat out a bit. Maybe it’s your anniversary, maybe you’ve just got a pay rise, or maybe you’re just in the mood for something a bit special. The Cotswolds restaurants have you covered on this front too, with some seriously impressive restaurants that still manage to feel welcoming rather than stuffy.

Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, Near Oxford

OK, I’m cheating a bit here as this is technically just on the edge of the Cotswolds, but it’s worth the slight detour. This place is pure, unabashed luxury – Raymond Blanc’s famous restaurant with rooms that’s been collecting awards like I collect empty wine bottles.

For my 30th birthday (let’s not talk about how long ago that was), my parents treated me to dinner here. I still dream about the tasting menu, each plate looked like a tiny work of art, and the flavours were incredible. Much of the produce comes from their own gardens, which you can wander around before or after your meal.

It’s definitely not cheap and you’re looking at around £180 per person for the tasting menu – but for a special occasion, it’s unforgettable. Book months ahead though; this place is popular for good reason.

The Fig, Chipping Campden

The Fig is the kind of place where you can dress up a bit without feeling overdressed. It’s elegant but not intimidating, and the food is absolutely beautiful.

This was another one that featured on my epic gastro tour, and both me and my wife both raved about it for weeks afterwards. The menu changes seasonally, but when we visited, I had seared scallops followed by the most tender lamb I’ve ever eaten.

The chef clearly knows their stuff, and there’s a genuine passion for showcasing local ingredients in creative ways. Prices are on the higher side, around £45-60 for three courses, but the quality justifies it. The wine list is excellent too, with some really interesting options by the glass and even more options by the bottle.

Restaurant Henne, Moreton-in-Marsh

Moreton-in-Marsh is one of my favourite Cotswold towns, and Restaurant Henne is a big reason why. It’s stylish without being showy, and the focus is firmly on the food.

I had a memorable meal here with a friend who was visiting from London and who, I’m slightly ashamed to admit, I was trying to impress with “sophisticated countryside dining.” The gamble paid off as she’s still talking about the roasted duck she had.

What I love about Henne is that the menu changes almost weekly depending on what’s good and local. Yes, it’s pricey at around £50-65 for three courses, but the attention to detail and quality of ingredients make it worthwhile. The staff know their wine too, and aren’t afraid to suggest something unusual that works perfectly with your food.

Casual Spots for When You Can’t Be Bothered to Put on Proper Trousers

Sometimes you just want good food without the faff. Maybe you’ve been walking all day, or maybe you just want to sit in a cafe with a book. These more casual spots deliver on flavour without requiring you to iron a shirt first.

The Coconut Tree, Cheltenham

Cheltenham might be known for its Regency architecture and horse racing, but it’s also home to The Coconut Tree, which serves up the most amazing Sri Lankan food.

I discovered this place by accident when I was staying with a friend in Cheltenham. We were meant to be going to some fancy restaurant, but I’d forgotten to pack anything remotely smart to wear. He suggested The Coconut Tree as a casual alternative, and it ended up being the highlight of my trip.

The concept is Sri Lankan tapas, small plates designed for sharing. The egg hoppers (a kind of pancake with an egg in the middle) are incredible, and their spicy coconut curries made me sweat in the best possible way. The atmosphere is lively and fun, and prices are surprisingly reasonable at around £5-7 per dish, and you’ll want to order several.

If you’re in Cheltenham you definitely want to give The Coconut Tree a visit.

Amore Mio, Cheltenham

Still in Cheltenham (what can I say, the town has good taste), Amore Mio is my go-to for proper Italian food. It’s family-run, and you can tell as there’s a warmth to the service that chain restaurants just can’t match.

I’ve eaten here twice with my wife, and the pasta is always spot-on. Their carbonara made me realise I’d been making it wrong my entire life (sorry, mum). The pizzas are fantastic too with thin, crispy bases with generous toppings, just the way I like them.

What I love about this place is that it feels special without being expensive. You can have a really lovely meal with wine for around £25-30 per person, and you’ll leave feeling like you’ve had a proper treat.

Huxley’s, Chipping Campden

When you’re in the mood for a casual lunch that’s a step up from a sandwich, Huxley’s hits the spot. It’s got a bit of an Italian slant, with good pizzas and salads.

I nipped in here for lunch while exploring Chipping Campden’s shops one day. It was raining (of course it was, this is England), and I was cold and grumpy (most likely Hangry). A pizza and glass of red wine later, and my mood had improved dramatically.

The prices are fair at around £12-15 for a main course and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. It’s particularly good for a solo lunch, as you don’t feel awkward sitting alone with a book.

The Old Bakery Tearoom, Blockley

If you’re after a classic cream tea or a slice of cake, The Old Bakery Tearoom in Blockley is hard to beat. It’s quintessentially English with floral tablecloths, mismatched china, the works.

I discovered this place during a particularly ambitious walk when I’d grossly overestimated my fitness levels. I staggered in, desperate for sugar and a sit-down, and was rewarded with the fluffiest scones I’ve ever tasted.

Their cakes are all homemade and change daily. The Victoria sponge is particularly good, light and moist with just the right amount of jam and buttercream. Prices are very reasonable too, with a cream tea for two coming in at around £15.

A Few Tips Before You Set Off

After several years of eating my way around the Cotswolds (it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it), I’ve picked up a few tips:

Book ahead, especially for dinner or Sunday lunch. The good places fill up quickly, particularly in summer.

Consider staying somewhere central like Stow-on-the-Wold or Chipping Campden. They’ve got plenty of eating options and make a good base for exploring.

If you’re planning on enjoying the local beers (and you should), think about taxis for evening meals. The country roads are dark and winding, and designated drivers miss out on all the fun.

Work up an appetite with walks between villages. The Cotswold Way has some stunning sections, and food always tastes better when you’ve earned it.

Don’t be put off by places that look touristy. Some of the most popular spots are popular for a reason – the food’s good!

So there you have it, my favourite places to eat in one of England’s most beautiful regions. Whether you’re after posh nosh, hearty pub grub, or something in between, the Cotswolds won’t disappoint. Just don’t blame me when your jeans feel a bit tight after your trip. Some sacrifices are worth making for good food.

Truly magical is the only way to describe The Quist Treehouse. It is set amongst 400 acres of private woodland with breathtaking views over the rolling Hereford countryside and the Malvern Hills. The design and craftsmanship is both simple yet luxurious – and I’m only just getting started!

Getting there

Wow! Even the approach to this stunning treehouse property was an adventure. It is not signposted at all, so you have to follow directions sent to you, to find its secret location.

The small track that leads to the treehouse cuts across a field and then climbs steeply through the woods. When you get to the end of the track you can just see the treehouse peeking through the trees. At this point the cries from the kids of ‘there it is!’ paralleled my own levels of excitement!

Arrival

As we got out of the car my girls could not contain their excitement any more and raced down the path between the ancient oaks and pines.

The first thing I noticed when I stepped inside was the heady scent of herbs and essential oils which really reflects the whole ethos of the property.

As soon as you walk in to The Quist you are drawn towards the picture frame like view from the huge patio doors which really is absolutely breathtaking.

Due to the house being set up on the side of the hill you can see for miles across rolling countryside with the Malvern Hills in the distance. However, this is not the only beautiful view that you have as every window looks out into the forest so wherever you turn you are greeted with more gorgeous scenery.

The interior is also gorgeous and in keeping with its surroundings.

All the furnishings have a focus on natural materials and earthy colours, including the incredibly comfortable sofa which is in the perfect position to enjoy the prime view. A lot of the furniture has been reclaimed and repurposed giving it a homely feel and supports the eco friendly ethos of the property.

The kitchen is small yet beautifully designed with cute checked curtains instead of kitchen cabinets.

I actually can’t decide which bedroom I prefer. There is a twin downstairs which has two huge windows looking out into the forest (perfect for deer spotting) which our daughters staked claim to.

Then up some very steep steps (practically a ladder) is the master bedroom otherwise known as the tent room. This room has a super king bed in the centre behind curtains which drape from the ceiling. Its only when you turn round you realise that this room also has a stunning view which if you’re lucky you can enjoy while sipping your morning coffee in bed (if you can successfully navigate the ladder without spilling it that is).

Bathroom

Again the bathroom is beautifully decorated with a rustic sink, a huge bath with a view and tasteful brass fittings. The bath is possibly one of the best ever, as it was long enough for me to fully stretch out (and I’m nearly 6ft) and had an uninterrupted view of the ancient woodland.

The only downside to the bathroom is the incinerator toilet which once you’ve got used to lining the pan with paper is actually no problem at all!

Now, there is no indoor shower, which when we told my 11 year old daughter upset her a lot. However, it was my favourite part of the house (even better than the hot tub). As we visited in early April it was still quite chilly in the morning but once you got under the hot waterfall shower the contrast between the outdoor temperature and the steaming hot shower was incredibly invigorating.

It has to be the best view from a shower I have ever had!

Outside

From the living room you step through doors which open up onto a wooden deck which has been built around two trees. There is a table and chairs to the left and a wood fired hot tub to the right.

When we first arrived the sun was shining so we made a pot of tea and sat amongst the dappled sunlight soaking up the view. My daughters particularly liked the cushions that were provided and they were often found lying on the decking forest bathing at any time of day including 8am when it was still extremely chilly.

I can totally understand why though, as it felt magical being out there amongst the trees listening to the bird song and the sounds of the woods.

My favourite time of day is the morning and it was the best place to enjoy my first cup of coffee….. absolute heaven!

The hot tub

The idea of sitting in a hot tub in the middle of a forest with nothing but the sound of birdsong sounds totally sublime so we wanted to get the hot tub fired up ready for the first evening. We followed the instructions on the video which was sent to us the day before and eagerly awaited our first dip in the hot tub.

We started at about 4pm and by 8:30pm it was only up to 26 degrees (when our target was 40) but the girls could wait no longer so donned their swimsuits and hopped in! After dipping my toes in I decided it wasn’t warm enough for me and left them to it!

The next day however we had a lot more success and managed to get it up to the desired 40 degrees in less than 2 hours as the hot tub is well insulated and had kept some of the heat from the day before.

TIP: From a starting point of 10 degrees you need to allow at least 6 hours to heat up the hot tub. It definitely is a labour of love!!!!

When we finally all got in the tub it wasn’t quite the experience I had imagined as we had two excitable children in there that couldn’t stay still but it was still pretty amazing. If you’re lucky enough to escape here without children it is the perfect place to sip on a glass of fizz in truly gorgeous surroundings.

Exploring the woodland

My daughters had come prepared to explore the woods with a set of walkie talkies to communicate, their walking boots (essential as it was quite muddy) and some binoculars.

As the woodlands are private we allowed them to explore on their own, giving them a massive sense of independence that we wouldn’t allow at home. Excitedly, they set off to explore and we enjoyed a few minutes of peace until we heard an excited announcement over the walkie talkie that they had spotted a deer! This absolutely made their day particularly my youngest who loves animals.

Exploring the local area

Hereford

On Saturday we ventured into Hereford for a mooch around and to our delight found that there was a market on with live music, food stalls and local craft makers. We stumbled upon a butchers where we purchased pies for dinner on Sunday, a stall with homemade brownies and went for a pit stop in Sensory and Rye for coffee.

While in Sensory and Rye we realised this is where the owners of The Quist had got some of their inspiration for the interiors.

Hereford is definitely worth a visit even if the market isn’t on, as it has lovely pedestrianised shopping streets, boutique shops and lots of options for lunch or coffee.

Weobley

On Sunday we found a 3 mile circular walk to do that started in Weobley, a small village only an 8 minute drive away from the treehouse.

We parked up on one of the streets and set off across fields filled with spring lambs to the delight of my youngest daughter (we had to hold her back from running up and stroking them!). It was a gentle route which is signed all the way and goes mainly across fields and up a country lane for a short stretch.

The walk finishes back in the village where there are two pubs if you fancy a drink after your walk. There is also a well stocked village shop where we bought some more logs as we ran out after the first night.

Dining out

We visited the local pub, The Bell Inn at Tillington, for dinner on Saturday night. It came highly recommended by the owners and had great reviews on Tripadvisor and definitely lived up to expectations.

We received a very warm welcome and were seated in the restaurant with a view of the garden to the rear. Our waitress was lovely and attentive – giving us advice on portion size (very important for our 11 year old) and the service was quick. The food was delicious, particularly the pork belly which my husband ordered from the specials menu.

Dining in At the Quist

The Quist is well equipped for dining in, with a small oven and gas hob, plenty of pans and utensils. In fact, it seems a shame not to eat there as where else would you get such amazing views in such a comfortable setting.

The girls loved the window seat with trees tapping at the window and we lingered over dinner enjoying the food, wine, company and views.

Eco-friendly

The Quist is totally powered by solar power for electricity and the heating runs off gas tanks. It is extremely well insulated to save energy and we found the heating didn’t need to be on for long for the house to feel super cosy. The hosts provide eco toiletries which smell divine and are also kind to the environment. Every effort has been made to make it ecologically sound yet luxurious at the same time.

The Quist offers a restful break away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You are immediately immersed into the beauty of the natural surroundings and feel a sense of pure relaxation.

It’s the perfect spot to reconnect with your favourite people and nature – and I for one will be looking to reconnect with The Quist Treehouse and all that it offers some time soon.

Arrival

We were greeted as soon as we stepped through the door by a friendly face on reception who showed us where to go. As we were a little bit early, we decided to have a coffee in the bar area which was beautifully decorated with quirky details that were still in keeping with the stunning original features such as intricately carved wood panels, high ceilings and sash windows.

After ordering a coffee, we settled ourselves down on a sumptuously comfy sofa in front of a roaring log fire. Bliss!

And so the relaxation began.

Entrance to the spa

The spa itself is situated in a building adjacent to the main hotel with beautiful views over the rolling Worcestershire countryside.

Again, as we entered we were greeted immediately and shown around the spa which is stunning. The first area has little booths for manicures and pedicures that are hidden behind cascading plants and furnished with some very cool yet comfy looking seating.

Once we had changed and put on the complimentary robe and slippers we headed to the main attraction, the pool area.

It definitely lives up to its name “The Greenhouse Spa” – with plants hanging from the rafters in a barn style building with huge windows bringing the outdoors inside. There are comfy sofas and seats to relax on amongst the botanical setting and you can order snacks and drinks to be served poolside. A real bonus in my opinion!

We took advantage and ordered ourselves a glass of Prosecco to sip on while flicking through a magazine in this tropical paradise.

The pool itself wasn’t busy and we had plenty of room to stretch our legs and do a few gentle lengths of the pool. The indoor/outdoor hydrotherapy pool was a real treat and even on a chilly winter’s afternoon it wasn’t too cold to venture outside. It was actually quite refreshing to be able to enjoy some fresh air but in the comfortable temperature of the pool.

Sauna and steam rooms

As well as the pool area there are two steam rooms, a sauna and a rainforest shower. After relaxing in the steam room or sauna it was fun to try and work out what all the buttons in the shower did and try and guess which direction the water would come from next.

Your shower is also accompanied by rainforest sound effects and mood lighting.

Afternoon Tea

As part of our spa package we had afternoon tea which was served in the main hotel in one of their dining rooms all of which are decorated slightly differently but are cosy and comfy with some interesting design details.

As for the food, the sandwiches were lovely and fresh and the scones were very light and still slightly warm, just the way they should be served.

The mini cakes were delicious but we struggled to finish them so the waitress kindly offered to box them up so we could take them home. It was all accompanied with unlimited tea, of which we sampled a few new varieties that we had never tried before.

Treatments

The treatment rooms also have the wow factor. Mine was huge and set up for couples treatments with a huge bed and double shower plus two normal treatment beds.

The botanical theme carries on in here, with natural wood panelling and plants in every corner. I had “The Power Breakfast” facial which is a 30 minute treatment. It includes a deep power cleanse, nutritious scrub and mask, revitalising face massage and wonderful scalp massage. It was a blissful half an hour on an extremely comfy heated treatment bed.

My friend had a massage and she said she could have stayed there all day!

Outside space

As it was about 4 degrees when we visited we didn’t really linger outside except for when we enjoyed the hydrotherapy pool. But there were lots of beautiful, uninterrupted views from every side of the manor house.

There are tables and chairs dotted around on the many patios and I could imagine sipping a chilled glass of wine enjoying the view in the sunshine. There are also sun loungers which would be perfect for a summer visit.

How to get there

The Elms is just off the A443 near to Abberly and Kidderminster. There is plenty of free parking including some EV charging points. If you are travelling by train there are a few nearby stations including Worcestershire Crowngate, Worcester Foregate, Kidderminster and Worcester Shrub Hill.

The whole experience felt very luxurious set in the beautiful, peaceful scenery of the Worcestershire countryside. It’s a quirky boutique hotel and spa, which feels cosy and homely compared to some of the others that I have visited and I love the botanical theme as I am officially a bit of a plant addict.

As for the service, nothing was too much trouble and we felt valued and cared for in every aspect as soon as we walked through the gorgeous entrance way.

We didn’t stay over night but wish we had as the rooms look gorgeous and are all decorated stylishly reflecting the personality of the rest of the hotel. If you’re not interested in a treatment, the rooms include access to The Greenhouse Spa and come with breakfast included which makes it a great deal for a romantic weekend or for a girlie getaway.

There is far more to Snowdonia than the mountain. And the national park. And the lakes. In fact, for an area in the UK that is renowned for so much beauty, it is still somewhat of a hidden gem. In this article, we are aiming to shine a little more light on this stunning area of Northwest Wales to help you discover what it has to offer.

Obviously the incredible natural scenery is a huge pull. The largest mountain in England and Wales, the craggy peaks, the views across the sea to Ireland, the waterfalls, the woodland – we’re barely scratching the surface here.

On top of that, though, is everything you can do in this region – the adventure capital. Whether you want to be zooming through the air on a zip wire, hike along one of the many trails, kayak in whitewater, explore the caves or have a round of golf, Snowdonia will have you covered.

And then there’s the history! With human activity in the area stretching back to the prehistoric era, you can see settlements dating back to 200 BC, plus Roman camps and castles galore. It’s an area steeped in history, right at the centre of fierce rivalries, and rife with many myths and legends.

There is so much to see and do, it could feel overwhelming, but don’t worry because we are here to help. Here are our top things to do in Snowdonia.

Snowdon Mountain Railway

We’ll kick things off with a classic Snowdonia attraction – the Mountain Railway. To put this simply, it is one of the most beautifully scenic railway journeys on the planet, and one that you should definitely take a trip on if you ever get the chance.

The thing is, though, that it isn’t just the scenery that is so impressive about this narrow gauge track – it’s the fact that this is a remarkable feat of engineering that has been taking tourists up to the summit of Snowdonia since the 19th century. A fact that is truly mind blowing.

The track is 4.7 miles long and reaches a height of 3,493 ft, with seven stations along the way. The total journey time from Llanberis, at the bottom, to the Summit Station is roughly an hour, and along the way you can enjoy the exquisite views that can stretch all the way to Ireland on a clear day.

Please note, though, that the Summit is only available between late Spring and the end of October. Outside of that time, you can travel as far as Clogwyn, which is about 75% of the way up.

You can even pick what fuel you would like to use to get you up there! There are two services that run – the Heritage Steam Experience, and the Traditional Diesel Service. Whichever you pick, you are in for a treat as you look down on the valleys below.

I would recommend booking in advance, though, as it can get busy during peak periods. Check out the weather forecast as well, as you get a much better experience when the sky is clear, and don’t forget to pack your camera.

Explore the Iconic Village of Portmeirion

A little piece of the Mediterranean nestled into North Wales, Portmeirion is a village unlike any other. Created and designed by the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis from 1925, it was built in the style of an Italian village – his objective was to see how a naturally beautiful site could be developed to enhance it, rather than spoil it.

It is a fascinating little place.

You could spend hours taking in the buildings set in this picturesque backdrop, but there is so much more to this village than just the architecture. There are some incredible restaurants, a superb spa and acres of woodland to explore.

There are two hotels in the village, The Hotel Portmeirion and Castell Deudraeth, which are both 4 star and both benefit from excellent service and attention to detail. On top of that, there are plenty of self-catering cottages there, so lots of choice if you decide that you want to make the most of your time there.

Our advice is to not make any plans for your time there, and just wander around. See where the day takes you – you might end up in the subtropical forest (with hidden lakes) or maybe you’ll find yourself at the Amis Ruins, the famous Stone Boat which you can only see when the tide is out.

This delightful little village is well worth your time. It’s a truly unique place, which stands as a monument to one man’s dream to bring the Mediterranean riviera to the Welsh coast. We’re very grateful that he did.

Take a dip in The Secret Infinity Pool

“Is it a secret if you include it in this article?” I hear you ask. Well yes, actually, because I am going to hold up my end of the unwritten bargain here by not revealing exactly where it is – that’s all part of what makes it such a magical place.

It cost £400,000 to build, a project that was undertaken by local farmer Wyn Mostyn Jones in 2016 as part of a green energy initiative. Over the years it has grown in popularity with tourists and locals alike, but if you want to find it for yourself, you’re going to have to put in a bit of effort to track it down.

What you will find when you get there is a magically serene setting…

Gentle running water and sounds of the wildlife are the only things you’ll hear, and the views of the surrounding area are simply magnificent. Time seems to stand still, but before you know it an hour has passed, and you slowly emerge from this dream-like tranquillity. It’s one of those experiences in life that you really just need to try out for yourself to fully appreciate it.

The only clue as to the location of Snowdonia’s Secret Infinity Pool that seems to be widely available is that it is on the Llanberis Pass, one of the most popular paths in the region.

That should narrow your search down a bit, but for the rest you are going to have to put in the work yourself. We would recommend looking at other people’s photos, have a look on Google Maps and search on YouTube for extra clues.

It’s such a fitting attraction for Snowdonia – adventure and tranquillity all rolled into one.

Hike Through Gwydir Forest Park

Right in the heart of Snowdonia National park is this idyllic forest park – all surrounding one of the prettiest villages in Wales, Betws-y-coed.

If you are starting out from the village, which we would urge you to do because the village is worthy of a place on this list in itself, then there is a choice of four different coloured trails to guide you through the forest – all with varying degrees of difficulty. There will be a path for you, whatever your experience and ability.

The paths range from a quick 30 minute walk (1.2 km) to a 3-5 hour hike (10.6 km, and a climb of 500m), but whichever one you choose you will be able to take in some incredible views, walk under majestic Douglas fir trees (some which are around 100 years old), and read some facts about the area that have been dotted around.

The most strenuous trek is well worth your consideration though, as you’ll get to walk around some stunning lakes and up to get some incredible views of the scenery below. The paths are less than a metre wide in some places, and conditions can get tough in wet weather, but if you are up for the adventure, then the peaceful atmosphere at the top of the climb is certainly worth it.

There is even an orienteering course there, so you can test your map-reading skills – just make sure that your relationship is secure before starting a course with your partner!

One of the best things about hiking around Gwydir Forest Park, though, is that you invariably end up back in Betws-y-coed where you can find yourself a lovely pub or cafe to reward yourself with a well-earned drink.

Visit Conwy Castle

Looming above the mediaeval market town of Conwy is Conwy Castle, one of the best-preserved castles of its kind in the world.

Built by Edward I in the late 13th century as a show of dominance over the rebellious Welsh, the castle remains one of the best examples of the period’s military architecture and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It really is quite remarkable how the castle has remained in such good condition in the centuries since it was built. Edward was known for his extravagance when it came to castles, but Conwy castle really is a testament as to how well built his castles were. It is a masterpiece, even if it didn’t fully do its job in uniting England and Wales – plenty of mountainous areas in North Wales remained out of his control.

There is so much history to discover at the castle, but even if that doesn’t interest you, the views that you have from there certainly will. It overlooks Conwy’s idyllic harbour and you also can look back at the Snowdonian peaks, as well as the 1.3 km wall that surrounds the town.

The castle has also been the setting for blockbuster movies – King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, starring Jude Law, was shot there, as well as 2020’s The Secret Garden. There really is something for everyone here.

Once you have spent time at the castle, be sure to go for a walk around the town. The whole town is packed full of historical buildings and landmarks, and with the river, harbour and beaches nearby, it’s a perfect location for a base for a Snowdonian holiday.

Delve into the Underground at Llechwedd Slate Caverns

Wales is a country with mining buried into its soul, and this rare opportunity to experience a trip 500 feet underground is not one to be missed. It is a tour that will stay with you long after you have returned to the surface.

The Deep Mine Tour at Llechwedd will walk you through the world of slate mining, which was so important to the area during the 19th and 20th centuries. You will be taken on an exhilarating trip up to the peaks of the site (on an ex-military truck), and en route you will be able to take in yet more stunning views of the surrounding Snowdonia landscape.

Then you’ll be led deep into the mine along Europe’s steepest narrow gauge railway, into the now-disused slate caverns. You’ll be told stories of the individual miners, as well as facts and information about the slate industry which was so important to the country.

It all culminates with a stunning light and sound display at the underground lake – a spectacle that needs to be seen to be believed. It’s a critical part of why the Llechwedd Slate Caverns have won awards as one of the best tourist attractions around.

We get that slate mining might not be the most exciting topic for everyone – largely because we felt the same when it was first suggested to us – but you need to trust us here, this is a thrilling attraction that you won’t regret visiting.

Go Below, with Go Below

The Llechwedd Slate Caverns that we have listed above are a great fun for all the family type of tourist attraction, that explores the industry and majesty of these incredible mines. But Go Below takes things up a notch…

Here, at Conwy Falls (just outside Betws-y-coed), you get to put yourself to the ultimate underground test involving zip lines, abseiling, boating, scaling waterfalls and climbing up vertical shafts. The kind of adventure that really gets your pulse tracing and your heart skipping a beat.

There are three different adventures to choose from, ranging from a 5-hour challenge, suitable for anyone aged 10 and up, to a 7-hour over 18s only extreme challenge with freefall jumps and the ‘goliath zip line’. This one is not for the fainthearted.

You can abseil down to the deepest point in the UK, guided by a friendly, experienced team of instructors that will make sure you are kept safe at all times. It’s the kind of activity that would be perfect for a stag do, but at the same time, ideal for anyone that loves a challenge.

They have also just constructed some underground cabins, so you can actually stay the night down there – 1375 ft below the surface, billed as ‘The Deepest Sleep In The World’.

This is the sort of once-in-a-lifetime experience that Snowdonia can provide. A slightly bonkers adventure, using a combination of nature and human industry to create something unique. If you like your trips with a bit of extreme adventure, this is the place for you.

Inland Surfing at Adventure Parcs

Surfing can be a frustrating pastime in the UK. The amount of time you need to wait to get the right conditions just means that it isn’t a viable hobby for 99% of the population that don’t have access to beaches on the right part of the coast. Even for those that do live near a great surfing beach, timing is everything.

Even though there are some truly spectacular beaches in North Wales, surfing is always difficult because the right kind of waves are very rare. So they have come up with a solution: Inland Surfing.

At Adventure Parcs, they have created a man-made lagoon which produces perfect waves every 90 seconds. This is done by an underwater snow plough, which runs along rails to create the pressure needed for the waves to materialise. The best thing of all, though , is that this can be fully controlled so that you can select which sort of waves you’d like to surf on.

There are four different levels: beginner, two intermediate levels and an advanced level. There is also an option to have lessons, so that you can learn from experts – it is the perfect environment to learn how to surf, rather than getting out in the sea and finding out that the waves are too rough or gentle for you to have a proper lesson.

Surfing is the type of thing that you can only learn by doing it, and here you can ensure you get plenty of waves to practice on.

If you have always wanted to get into surfing, but didn’t know where to start, let me help you out – start here at Adventure Parcs.

Just a quick note here – surfing is just one of the watersports available in Snowdonia. If you would like to try wakeboarding, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, canoeing, paddle boarding etc – Snowdonia is the place to head.

Strike Gold at Sygun Copper Mine

A change of pace now, as we look at the Sygun Copper Mine – another fascinating site that will help to illustrate the importance of the mining industry in the area.

This is a great day out for a family. The tours are self guided and you are permitted to explore on your own the winding tunnels and colourful chambers as you try to remember the difference between stalactites and stalagmites…! The copper ore ‘veins’ look magnificent in these perfectly lit caverns.

The mine has been disused since 1903, but this perfectly preserved mine gives you a direct look at what it would have been like during those busy Victorian years, a rare opportunity to experience this era.

While it is fascinating for guests of any age, there is plenty to do for children, with a playground, museum of antiquities, a metal detecting area and the opportunity to ‘Pan for Gold’.

The tour lasts about 40 minutes, and with the additional activities, it would make a nice activity for a family for a morning. We would suggest heading down to the beautiful village of Beddgelert when you are finished to get some lunch. It’s only three quarters of a mile down the road, and is picturesque with plenty of places to grab some lunch or a drink.

Climb Snowdon

Okay, we couldn’t write a list of things to do in Snowdonia and not include the most obvious one – it is, quite literally, the high point of any visit to the area.

There are six different paths to get you to the top: Llanberis Path, Pyg Track, Miners’ Track, Watkin Path, Rhyd-Ddu Path or the Snowdon Ranger Path, which all vary slightly in terms of distance and expected time to complete, but they all have the same difficulty rating which is ‘Hard/Strenuous’.

This is not a jolly little walk up a hill and back again – you are going to scale the biggest mountain in England and Wales.

You’ll need to allow at least 7 hours for the trip in total, and make sure you have prepared sufficiently – plan your route, wear comfortable/suitable clothing, have plenty of food and drink with you and make sure you tell someone about your trip so they can check on you.

Every year there are around 200 call outs for help from people that get into trouble up there.

This isn’t supposed to put you off, far from it, we include this to leave you with no uncertainty – climbing Snowdon is a proper adventure. The sense of achievement when you get up there is very real, and you are rewarded with some of the most incredible views in the UK.

There is plenty of information available to help you prepare for your trip, so use it and make sure you know what you’re doing and where you’re going. Then all you have to do is keep safe and enjoy one of the most incredible hikes in the UK.

Why we love Snowdonia

So there you have it, our list of things to do in Snowdonia.

Reading that, I am sure you have already seen why we love this region so much. Where else in the world could you visit a quaint disused copper mine in the morning, and then go inland surfing in the afternoon? Or have a mooch around a picturesque rural village on your way to an underground zip line?

It’s a region that brings together the modern and the past. Nature and man-made industry. Beauty and exhilaration. That’s why we love Snowdonia.
