Picture this: your five-year-old crouched over a rock pool, squealing with delight as a tiny crab scuttles across their finger. Meanwhile, your teenager’s actually looking up from their phone, genuinely interested and perhaps even inspired in the surfers taking to the waves. And you? You’re sipping a proper Cornish tea while soaking up some of the most stunning coastal views Britain has to offer.

This is Cornwall – a beautiful slice of England where everyone in a multi-generational family has a good time.

I’ve spent years exploring every nook and cranny of this magnificent county with my own brood, and trust me, I’ve made all the mistakes you now don’t have to. From discovering which beaches have the best ice cream vans (yes, it matters) to finding those hidden spots where you won’t be jostling with a hundred other families, this guide pulls together everything I’ve learned.

Whether you’re dealing with toddler meltdowns, trying to keep teenagers engaged, or simply want a family break that everyone enjoys, Cornwall delivers. We’re talking golden sandy beaches, legendary surf breaks, wildlife encounters, and enough history to satisfy even the most reluctant young historian.

The best bit? This guide draws from real family experiences – the “wish I’d known that” moments, and some insider tips that make all the difference, especially when you have kids in tow.

Why Cornwall is Perfect for Families

Cornwall is perfect for anyone, really. I’d happily go as a solo traveller. It’s a great escape for couples young and old. And it’s fantastic for families.

First off, the coastline is absolutely spectacular. We’re talking 400 miles of it, with everything from the famous surfing beaches of Newquay to hidden coves where the kids can splash about while you actually relax for five minutes. Places like Fistral Beach aren’t just postcard-pretty; they’ve got some awesome shops and restaurants, too.

The history here isn’t stuffy museum stuff either. It’s living, breathing adventure. Tintagel Castle, with its King Arthur connections, sits on cliffs that are worth posting on your socials, even if you usually avoid it. And yes, there really is a Merlin’s Cave underneath – try keeping kids away from that.

Tintagel Castle.

Here’s a practical tip from someone who learned the hard way: download the Cornwall 365 app before you go. It’s a game-changer for finding local events and working out when attractions are quieter.

According to VisitCornwall, over 4.5 million families holiday here each year – and there’s a reason they keep coming back.

Best Beaches for Family Fun

Right, let’s talk beaches. Because honestly, if you’re taking the family to Cornwall and not spending proper time on the sand, you’re missing the point entirely.

Fistral Beach, Newquay has to be my number one pick for families with a mix of ages. It’s just around the corner from Newquay, without the town spilling into it. The surf here is legendary. The lifeguarding here is spot-on, and there are designated areas where beginners can have a go without getting in the way of the serious surfers.

The beach itself is massive, so there’s plenty of room for everyone, plus the restaurants nearby do a cracking fish and chips when you need to refuel. The Fish House was my favourite, though you’ll need to reserve – but there are other very good premises such as Rick Stein’s, and some cool bars that make you feel as though you’re abroad.

Porthcurno Beach is where I go if the family want something a bit more chilled. There’s this lovely stream that runs across the beach – perfect for kids who find the sea a bit overwhelming. Last summer, my niece spent an entire afternoon building an elaborate dam system in that stream while the adults actually got to read their books.

The Minack Theatre sits right above the beach too, so you can catch a show if the weather turns. Just pack cushions – those carved stone seats weren’t designed for comfort.

Polzeath Beach is another cracker, especially if you’re staying anywhere near Padstow. The surf school here is brilliant with kids, and the beach itself has that classic Cornish vibe. Top tip from hard-won experience: get there early in summer. By noon, finding a parking spot requires either divine intervention or a very good relationship with the locals.

For something completely different, Tolcarne Beach in Newquay is best for rock pooling. Low tide reveals this incredible underwater world that’ll keep kids entertained for hours. Just watch those slopes – they’re very steep and not pram-friendly. Though credit where it’s due, Wavehunters (the surf shop there) lends out beach wheelchairs, which is brilliant thinking.

One thing I’ve learned from years of Cornish beach-hopping: always check those tide times and lifeguard flags. Red flag means no swimming, no matter how much your 12-year-old insists they’re confident.

And here’s a secret: if you want to escape the crowds, head to places like Prussia Cove. It’s a hidden gem not many flock to.

Wildlife and Animal Adventures

Cornwall is home to a good few wildlife attractions, and they aren’t just educational – they’re proper adventures that even the most jaded teenager will admit are “actually quite cool.”

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek is where we love to go as a family. These seals are rescue animals, which adds a proper feel-good factor to your visit. The feeding times are brilliant – seals are basically underwater comedians, and watching them at dinner time never gets old. They’ve got penguins and otters too, plus the sanctuary staff are genuinely passionate about what they do.

Tickets run about £16.75 for adults and £12.50 for kids, though bear in mind you’re supporting actual rescue work. My friend took her two-and-a-half-year-old last month and she still talks about the seals. That’s the mark of a proper family day out.

Newquay Zoo might not have the conservation angle, but it’s got over 1,000 animals and some seriously impressive experiences. The meerkats here are characters – they’ve got this meerkat feeding session where the little ones basically perform for their supper. And if your kids are animal-mad, they do these “Zookeeper for a Day” experiences which are brilliant.

When the weather turns (and it will), Dairyland Farm Park is your salvation. Tractor rides when it’s sunny, massive indoor soft play when it’s chucking it down. The milking demonstrations are surprisingly entertaining – it’s one of those things where you think “surely this won’t hold their attention” but somehow it does.

Fair warning though: some activities cost extra on top of the entry fee. Family tickets are around £48, which isn’t cheap, but the place is very buggy-friendly and has enough variety to fill a whole day.

For something completely free (or nearly free), Flicka Donkey Sanctuary near Falmouth is a very worthy trip. It’s one of those low-key places where kids can actually pet the animals without queuing for hours. The donkeys are gentle souls, and there are always rabbits hopping about. Perfect for younger kids who might find bigger attractions overwhelming.

Pro tip: pack your own picnic. The cafe food at these places won’t break the bank, but it won’t win any awards either. Plus, most animal attractions have lovely picnic spots where you can watch the animals while you eat.

Historical and Cultural Exploration

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “History? With kids? You must be joking.” But Cornwall’s history isn’t your typical classroom stuff. It’s sword-fighting kings, sea-faring legends, and proper adventure stories that happen to be true.

Tintagel Castle is one of the best of Cornish historical sites. It’s supposedly King Arthur’s birthplace, and whether you believe in the legends or not, the place is genuinely magical. The new bridges they’ve built provide spectacular views, and yes, Merlin’s Cave is real and accessible (though mind the tides).

However, this isn’t pram territory. The steps are steep and numerous. I’ve previously watched a determined family attempt it with a pushchair and, well, let’s just say they ended up carrying more than just the baby. But for kids old enough to manage the climb, it’s absolutely worth it.

St Michael’s Mount gives Tintagel a run for its money on the wow factor. The causeway walk at low tide is an adventure in itself – my kids spent ages timing the waves and trying not to get their shoes wet. At high tide, you take a boat, which the kids always prefer (obviously).

The castle itself is impressive, but if I’m honest, it’s the the journey that’s the star attraction here. You could visit once at low tide and once at high tide on the same day, just for the contrast.

St Michael’s Mount.

Minack Theatre is one of those places that sounds mad until you see it. Someone actually carved a theatre into a cliff face, and it’s spectacular. Even if you don’t catch a show, the views alone are worth the trip. Just bring cushions – those stone seats were clearly designed by someone who’d never had to sit through a three-hour performance.

The Lanhydrock estate is perfect for families who want a full day out. It’s National Trust, so if you’re members, you’re sorted. The gardens are gorgeous, there’s a brilliant playground, and they’ve got cycle trails that are actually suitable for kids. They do these family quizzes too, which keep the little ones engaged whilst you admire the architecture.

Quick money-saving tip: if you’re planning to visit multiple heritage sites, that English Heritage or National Trust membership will pay for itself pretty quickly. Plus, members often get to skip queues, which is priceless when you’re dealing with impatient children.

Adventure Parks and Rainy-Day Fun

Many of us know that Cornwall’s weather can be, well, Cornish. The difference between Cornwall in the sunshine and Cornwall in whipping rain, is vast. If the forecast isn’t looking too good for your time there, proper backup plans become essential.

Camel Creek Adventure Park near Padstow is my go-to when the kids need to burn off serious energy. Forty-plus rides ranging from gentle toddler stuff to proper stomach-dropping thrills for the teenagers. The indoor soft play is enormous, which means when the weather turns, you’re not stuck cramming into some tiny play area with fifty other families.

Last summer, we spent an entire rainy afternoon there and the kids didn’t stop moving. Staff are brilliant too – really patient with nervous first-timers and safety-conscious without being overzealous about it.

The Eden Project deserves all the hype it gets. Those massive biomes are like nothing else – walking from a Cornish drizzle into a tropical rainforest never gets old. The educational stuff doesn’t feel preachy, and there’s loads of hands-on activities. Plus, they’ve got that zipwire now, which draws queues of teenagers like moths to a flame. And it doesn’t really matter what the weather’s doing when you’re here.

If you’re thinking of going more than once, the annual pass makes financial sense. We bought one on a whim during our first visit and ended up going back three times that same year.

The Eden Protect. Credit: Instagram, @edencommunities

Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay isn’t huge, but it’s perfectly formed. The interactive rock pool section lets kids actually touch sea creatures, and the whole place is pushchair-friendly. Just be aware that wheelchair access is a bit limited in some areas – worth checking ahead if that’s important for your family.

Jubilee Pool in Penzance is one of those uniquely Cornish experiences. An Art Deco seawater lido that’s been restored to its former glory. The kiddie area is safely separated from the main pool, and there’s something brilliantly old-fashioned about swimming in heated seawater whilst looking out at Mount’s Bay.

Money-saving tip: most of these places offer online discounts if you book ahead. Nothing massive, but every tenner saved is another ice cream fund contribution.

Hidden Gems and Free Activities

Sometimes the best family experiences come without a price tag attached. Cornwall’s full of these budget-friendly days out that offer just as much fun as the paid attractions.

Devichoys and Pendarves Woods are brilliant for toddler adventures. These woods have proper paths suitable for little legs, plus they’re free to explore. I’ve spent many a morning here with a tired toddler, a bag of snacks, and absolutely no agenda. Sometimes that’s exactly what families need.

The Portreath Track (also called the Bissoe Bike Trail) is cycling paradise for families. It’s a flat, traffic-free route with stunning views, linking old mining areas with gorgeous countryside. The whole family can cycle together without worrying about cars or steep hills. We’ve done this trail countless times, often ending up in one of the cafes along the route for well-earned cake.

St Ives boat trips offer brilliant value if you time them right. The seal-watching trips are popular for good reason – seeing wild seals in their natural habitat is far more exciting than any zoo experience. Kids love spotting dolphins too, though that’s more of a bonus than a guarantee.

Cornwall Wildlife Trust reserves dot the county and offer free access to some genuinely special places. They often run events too – pond dipping, bug hunts, that sort of thing. Last month we joined a rockpool ramble at one of their coastal reserves. The kids learned more about marine life in two hours than in weeks of wildlife documentaries.

Here’s an all-time classic: many of Cornwall’s beaches have those brilliant 2p arcades that kids absolutely love. It’s old-school entertainment that costs pennies. Teenagers who usually roll their eyes at anything retro can spent an entire evening trying to win that little gadget on the tip, or the biggest soft toy from the grabber machines.

The key to enjoying these free activities is managing expectations. You’re not going to get wifi, gift shops, or fancy facilities. But you will get proper Cornish experiences without the crowds or the cost.

Practical Tips for Families

After years of trial and error (mostly error, if I’m honest), here’s what I’ve learned about visiting Cornwall with kids:

Accessibility matters more than you think. Places like the Eden Project have excellent disability access and pushchair facilities. Beaches like Tolcarne, however, can be challenging. Always check ahead if you need specific accessibility features.

Budget smart. Cornwall can be pricey, but it doesn’t have to bankrupt you. Pack picnics – most attractions have lovely picnic areas anyway. Take advantage of memberships if you’re visiting multiple National Trust or English Heritage sites. And those free donkey sanctuaries and wildlife reserves are often better than paid attractions.

Weather preparation saves the day. Pack layers, always. Waterproofs, sunscreen, and spare clothes should be standard regardless of the forecast. Having indoor backup plans isn’t being pessimistic – it’s being Cornish.

Rockpooling in Cornwall. Credit: Instagram, @cornwallguide

Driving tips from someone who’s navigated those lanes with screaming kids: the back roads are often quicker but they’re narrow. Really narrow. Cornwall drivers are generally patient, but don’t test their limits. Pull into passing places whenever you can.

Here’s the most important thing I’ve learned: let Cornwall be itself. Don’t try to cram everything into one trip. Sometimes the best family memories come from simply enjoying an ice cream on the beach or playing in the sand for hours. As one family put it perfectly: “Let the place be the experience – ice creams, 2p machines, seaside vibes.” That’s Cornwall in a nutshell.

Ready to Create Magical Cornwall Memories?

Cornwall has given me and my family some of the best memories we’ll always remember.

From those first tentative steps into the surf at Fistral Beach to the inevitable tears when you have to leave Tintagel Castle, this county has a way of creating moments that stick with you long after the sand’s been washed out of your shoes. Whether your kids remember meeting their first seal, building epic sandcastles, or simply enjoying the freedom to roam in wide-open spaces, Cornwall gives families something genuinely special.

The beauty of Cornwall lies in its diversity. Beach days, castle adventures, wildlife encounters, rainy-day fun – it’s all here waiting for you. And with proper planning (checking those tide times, booking tickets online, visiting in shoulder seasons), you can make the most of every moment without the stress.

So go on, start planning that Cornwall adventure. Your family’s about to discover why over 4.5 million families choose Cornwall each year – and why they keep coming back.

What’s your first stop going to be? The surf beaches of Newquay? The mysterious castle at Tintagel? Or maybe just a simple day building sandcastles on one of those perfect Cornish beaches? Whatever you choose, you’re in for something special.

Got questions about specific attractions or need advice for your particular family setup? Drop them in the comments below – there’s always another Cornwall story to share or insider tip to pass along. After all, the best travel advice comes from families who’ve been there, done that, and got the (slightly wet and sandy) t-shirt to prove it.

St Ives

St Ives is the perfect, picturesque seaside town boasting seven beaches with golden sand and gorgeous views. It is the place on the tip of everyone’s tongue due to its cute, cobbled streets with various bars, cafes and restaurants not to mention its abundance of small independent galleries where the many local artists display their work. If its true beauty and charm you are looking for then St Ives definitely wins every time!

Penzance

Penzance has had a bit of a makeover in the last few years with a brand new promenade, the reopening of the Jubilee Pool (an art deco salt water geothermal pool) and lots of new boutique shops, galleries and restaurants popping up. It isn’t such a seaside holiday resort as St Ives but still has a lot to offer. Its location makes it the perfect base for exploring this part of Cornwall and the accommodation is considerably cheaper than St Ives something you definitely need to take into consideration.

Beaches

If beaches on your doorstep is what you want then St Ives is the place for you. It has a total of seven beaches which face in different directions giving them their own characteristics. Porthmeor is the biggest beach and faces the Atlantic, so is the best for surfing and bodyboarding, this beach is half a mile wide so plenty of room even at high tide. Porthgwidden and Bamaluz Beach, are sometimes good for surfing depending on the weather conditions and Harbour Beach, Breakwater, Lambeth and Porthminster are much calmer as they face into St Ives Bay so better for swimming.

With such an array of different beaches in St Ives, Penzance finds it hard to compete but it does have pebble beach within easy walking distance of the town centre. You can also walk along the coastal path to Longrock Beach a lovely golden sandy beach which has views of St Michael’s Mount. We found that this beach was often the best place to be when there was a northerly wind as it is protected by the sea wall. From Penzance you are also very close to some of Cornwall’s best secret beaches such as Nanjizal and Pedn Vounder. Read our Guide to Hidden Beaches to find out more.

Food

Food is where I think Penzance gains the edge, it has lots of restaurants in the centre of town offering up anything from fine dinning to simple yet delicious fish and chips. Then there is also Newlyn, the heart of the Cornish fishing industry, which for a small town has a plethora of excellent restaurants serving up wonderfully fresh food. Our personal favourite for casual dining is Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar in a tiny little building next to the river which offers up an array of fresh fish tapas. For more formal dining there is the Tolcarne Inn, again offering excellent seafood, in a cosy and friendly 18th century pub. It features in the Michelin guide which describes it as serving “Appealing, flavoursome dishes centred around fresh fish and shellfish, most of which is landed at the adjacent harbour”.

St Ives also has many restaurants, cafes and bars particularly around the harbour. One of our favourites is Balcony Bar and Kitchen, which due to its second floor location has great views across the harbour and serves delicious comfort food and an excellent breakfast. The other place that comes highly recommended is Porthmeor Beach Cafe. It serves lovely fresh food with an amazing view out over Porthmeor Beach, ideal for breakfast, lunch, tapas right through to evening meals and is the best place to watch the sunset.

Things to do

If surfing and water sports are your thing, then St Ives is definitely the place to be as it offers great options for everyone from surfing on Porthmeor Beach to paddle boarding in the calmer waters in St Ives Bay. It also has a buzzing art scene, so if you are creative or simply enjoy admiring original artist and designer’s work then you’ll find lots of options here. St Ives is home to the Tate and the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture garden which are a must see if you are an art lover like me.

Penzance also has a growing number of galleries including Penlee House Gallery, Newlyn Art Gallery and the nearby Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens. Lots of the shops in Penzance that are opening up have a vintage vibe and you will also find lots of small independent shops scatter amongst some of the pedestrian area.

Penzance boasts the Jubilee Pool which is the largest salt water lido in the UK. It was built in the 1930s and more recently renovated in 2014 when it had started to fall into disrepair. It has a smaller geothermal pool which is a real treat to relax in after a refreshing dip in the larger sea water pool next to it. We spent a lovely afternoon here enjoying the pools and then visiting the onsite cafe for refreshments afterwards. In the summer they have an inflatable obstacle course at different times which was great fun for everyone.

Practicalities

Penzance is on the main train line but St Ives can also be accessed by train as it has its own branch.

Parking in St Ives is not easy due to the small winding cobbled roads and many places do not come with parking nearby so you have to park at the car park at the top of the hill and walk down into St Ives. Penzance has on road parking for many places and a huge car park by the harbour which is reasonably priced.

St Ives is extremely busy in high season so be prepared to go shoulder to shoulder when wandering around the smaller streets near the harbour and book well in advance if there is a particular restaurant you want to visit. Penzance is a lot quieter and also a bigger town so if you don’t like battling through crowds, it is probably the better option for you. We visited St Ives while staying near Penzance and thoroughly enjoyed our day but were happy to get back to the relative peace and tranquility of the south coast.

Quick Verdict: Penzance or St Ives

St Ives

St Ives is a beautiful, quaint English seaside town boasting seven beaches so something for everyone.

It has a great art scene and so many galleries you’d struggle to visit them all.

Very lively atmosphere, particularly in the summer season and lots of good food options in walking distance.

Penzance

Penzance is a lot quieter with no need to book months in advance to get a table.

There is a great food scene and excellent fresh fish in Newlyn, the heart of the Cornish fishing industry.

It makes a good base to explore the coastal path, hidden beaches and St Michael’s Mount.

Accommodation is considerably cheaper than St Ives.

Nanjizal Beach

Nanjizal, also known as Mill Bay, is a truly enchanting beach set amongst rugged cliffs in the parish of St Levan. It doesn’t only boast a beautiful cove of golden sand, scattered with huge boulders, but is also home to the Song of the Sea Cave. The Song of the Sea Cave is a tall narrow cave which looks magical as the sun’s rays shine through the slit in the rocks reflecting in the tidal pools.

Nanjizal is hidden between the popular tourist attraction, Land’s End and the white sands of Porthcurno Beach and can only be accessed by foot via the South West Coastal Path. See our Guide to Nanjizal Beach to find out the best ways to get there.

Due its location it is never crowded, even in the peak season. There have only ever been a handful of families enjoying this little piece of paradise when we have visited.

We’ve been lucky to stay within walking distance of Nanjizal, so have visited at all times of day and in different weather conditions. Each time we have loved it, as it has such a magical feeling whether you are swimming in the tidal pools, climbing over rocks or enjoying an evening picnic sipping a glass of something refreshing while watch the sunset.

Nanjizal has stolen a little piece of my heart and I am always planning when I can next return.

Pedn Vounder

When we first discovered Pedn Vounder beach we didn’t know its name, so our girls named it the secret beach. It was during our first visit to Porthcurno beach and as the tide went out we noticed that you could access a smaller, completely empty beach a few hundred meters to the east of Porthcurno. We waded through the shallow water and found ourselves on the beautiful white sands of what we now know is called Pedn Vounder.

The girls loved being the first people to set foot on the beach, making footprints in the sand and exploring all the caves in the stunning rugged cliffs of Treryn Dinas. The beach looks out onto beautiful turquoise waters and is watched over by Logan’s Rock to the east.

This beach can also be access from the coastal path via an extremely steep and difficult to navigate path that involves scrambling down the cliffs. We have never tried to go this way with the children and have always just waited to walk round from Porthcurno, as it can be dangerous. If you walk round at low tide you have to be aware of tide times, as even the best swimmers could get into trouble with rip tides being common here.

There is a car park at Porthcurno beach, which does get very busy in the summer so make sure you arrive early, or a grass car park at Treen which is a 10 minute walk to the steep path that leads down to Pedn Vounder.

Porthchapel Beach

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="500" height="750" src="https://biglittletravels.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Porthchapel.jpg" alt="Porthchapel

Porthchapel is again found between Porthcurno and Land’s End (our favourite bit of coastline) and is accessed down a steep path from the main coastal path. It is more easily accessed than Pedn Vounder, but it is still wise to wear trainers or walking sandals as at times you need to scramble down the rocks.

We found this little beach while on a walk and fell in love with the dramatic cliffs that surround it and on the day we visited the waves were particularly spectacular. As we ate our picnic we enjoyed watching the waves crash against the huge boulders scattered across the golden sand, sending spray shooting into the air in a very impressive display.

This beach is quiet in comparison to the nearby Porthcurno but still has amazing views over the azure sea framed by rugged cliffs on either side. Not as difficult to access as Pedn Vounder or Nanjizal, as there is a nearby car park at St Levan Church which is a 5 to 10 minute walk through a wooded valley.

Pentire Steps

credit @kilden_mor

Pentire Steps is one cove away from the famous sandy beach of Bedruthan Steps. Situated on the North Cornwall coast between the popular resorts of Padstow and Newquay, Pentire Steps is the complete opposite of its neighbour. At Bedruthan you will find a busy car park with a cafe and a beach peppered with people, whereas at Pentire Steps you will find a quiet golden cove backed by tall cliffs.

The view from above is spectacular and if you make the tricky descent down to the beach itself you will be rewarded as very few people venture down. Enjoy the peace and quiet listening to the turquoise waters lap against the shore in your own little bit of Cornish heaven.

Beware that swimming is not advised at anytime due to strong rip currents. The beach is also almost completely covered at high tide so it is advisable to check tide times before visiting.

Leggan Cove

credit @car0lus

Leggan Cove is a beautiful, pretty much undiscovered beach which is also practical to visit with children. You do not need to take your life in your own hands by scrambling down cliff faces. However, it is quite a walk from the nearest parking at Rosenithon, a small village nearby, so it remains quiet even during peak season.

It is situated on the sheltered eastern side of the Lizard Peninsular and is backed by gently slopping cliffs. The sea is often a lot calmer here and therefore safer for swimming and great for snorkelling. For those that want to stay mainly on dry land, rock pools are revealed at low tide which always entertain my girls for hours.

                  Pin it for later!

Small but perfect, this little cove has a cobbled slipway and a small sandy beach at low tide.

Porthgwarra beach is southerly facing, with steep cliffs on either side, sheltering it from strong coastal winds. The slipway is still used by a handful of fishing boats but it has now become famous for being the backdrop to many scenes from the popular series Poldark.

How To Get There

Porthgwarra sits on the rugged south coast of Cornwall between Land’s End and Porthcurno. It can be easily accessed from the coastal path whichever direction you are coming from. Land’s End is 2.7 miles to the west of Porthgwarra and Porthcurno is about a mile to the east, so you can easily stop off at this little cove on a coastal walk.

If you are travelling by car from Penzance leave the B3315 just after passing through the small village of Trethewey. You will pass a playing field on your right and you then take a left turn, signed to Porthgwarra, when the road bends sharply to the right.

If you are coming from the west then you pass a small duck pond on your left and when the road bends sharply to the left you take a smaller road to the right signed towards Porthgwarra beach.

Follow this winding single track road, which at times is very narrow, until you reach the tiny village of Porthgwarra. The car park is situated behind the little cafe and is free from November to March. However, during the summer months parking fees do apply.

History

Porthgwarra was a small fishing base in the Elizabethan era but was not recorded as a village until the 19th century.

The small slipway was built in 1880 and around this time they also carved tunnels in the cliffs to provide access to the beach. Ullies (shellfish storage tanks made from granite) were also created to store shellfish on the beach which you can see being used in the pilchard catching scene from Poldark.

The last fishermen working from this cove retired in the 1960s and now the slipway and beach are privately owned but open to the public to enjoy.

High Tide At Porthgwarra

At high tide, you may not see any sand at all – and to call it Porhgwarra beach might sound like a stretch.

The first time we visited we were walking the coastal path and stumbled upon this little gem. We sat on the cobbled slipway enjoying the the magical view with a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit.

It’s a beautiful little spot to while away an hour or two. I sat sketching the tunnel and rugged, weathered cliffs while the rest of the family clambered over the rocks and explored hidden caves. The highlight was catching sight of a seal basking in the shallow waters of the cove.

While we were at Porthgwarra Cove other people were more prepared and had snorkelling equipment. The cove is the perfect place for snorkelling with its crystal clear waters and a variety of sea creatures can be spotted.

We also saw people paddle boarding, taking advantage of the calm water and safety of the cove (a great place for beginners). Be careful not to stray out of the cove as there can be strong currents and there is no lifeguard patrol.

Low Tide At Porthgwarra

At low tide a small area of soft golden sand is revealed with just enough room to build a sandcastle or lay out a towel and relax with a book. It might not last long though so enjoy it while you can.

Also, many rock pools appear which can give you hours of fun, especially with small children. If you like beaches with large expanses of sand so you can play beach games and plenty of room to set up camp for the day then Porthgwarra isn’t for you! However, if you are looking for a peaceful spot to while away an hour or so with breathtaking views then give it a try.

Porthgwarra Cafe

The cafe at Porthgwarra serves a range of savoury options such as pasties, sandwiches and baked potatoes, hot and cold drinks and ice creams. It also offers traditional cream teas and homemade cakes served in a lovely little garden in this amazing location.

Beware it only has outdoor seating so is not the place to visit on a rainy day! After all, no-one likes a soggy pasty.

Poldark

Probably the most well known scene from Poldark that was filmed at Porthgwarra, is when Ross Poldark goes skinny dipping in the sea while Demelza (his maid) watches from the cliff top. This marks the beginning of their epic romance.

Among many others, it was also used as the location for the Pilchard Catch scene when there were traditional 18th century sailing boats specifically brought to the cove.

Accommodation

The accommodation here is limited as it is such a small hamlet but there are a few rental cottages in the cove and the surrounding area which offer amazing views in remote locations.

Why We Love Porthgwarra

Even though Porthgwarra beach, a once sleepy fishing cove, has now risen to fame after featuring in the Poldark series it still isn’t overcrowded – even in the height of the summer season. Each time we visited, there were only a handful of other families enjoying this little cove so it has kept its charm unlike other places in Cornwall.

Porthgwarra Cove is like stepping back in time, offering you a glimpse of what Cornwall would have been like in the 18th Century, as it hasn’t changed much since then.

It is the ideal spot to take a break as you walk along the coastal path but is also worth making a special trip to especially if you are a Poldark fan. The cute little cafe with delicious food is just the icing on the cake.

Fistral Beach – it’s one of the most famous and iconic beaches in the UK. It features in countless ‘Top 10’ lists of beaches, hosts the largest surf and skateboarding festival in Europe and is generally regarded as one of the world’s top surfing destinations.

To put it simply, Fistral Beach is a big deal.

Of the nearly six million people that visit Newquay every year, most will make their way up to Fistral Beach at some point during their stay. It’s one of those things that you just have to do when you visit the town.

Once you’ve had a Cornish Pasty – obviously!

Overlooked by the Headland Hotel, which is iconic in its own right, Fistral Beach is the perfect place for the entire family, with golden sand, rocks to explore, first rate facilities, and, of course, those incredible surfing conditions.

If ever you are in the area, and you haven’t already been, I would urge you to make time for a trip to Fistral Beach. It’s reputation is more than deserved, and you will find that there is plenty more to it than just the surfing for which it is so well known.

Let me tell you exactly why me and my family adore Fistral Beach, with all the information you’ll need to have the perfect day there.

How To Get To Fistral Beach

One of the many incredible things about Fistral Beach is that it is just outside Newquay Town Centre. The location dictates that there always feels like a crowd of people are making their way up to the beach – particularly in the summer months.

As you would expect for such a popular destination, the beach is incredibly well signposted throughout the town. The easiest way to walk there is to walk through the town centre and then walk up Fore Street. Once you get to a roundabout, with the Red Lion pub, you have a choice: you can head straight over, before taking the next left onto Headland Road, which will lead you all the way to the north end of the beach; or you can take the first left onto Tower Road, quickly followed by a right onto Toby Way. This will take you to a path which cuts through the golf course, taking you to the centre of the beach.

To be honest, parking at Fistral Beach isn’t great at all. There is a small, very expensive, car park right next to the beach, and a number of small car parks along Tower Road – however, these fill up incredibly quickly, especially if the weather is nice. You will need to get there very early to secure a spot, or consider one of the car parks in the town and walk the rest of the way. There is some street parking towards the south of the beach, but again, this fills up very quickly.

I very naively took my family for an afternoon at Fistral beach in our car last summer – it ended up with us abandoning our plans and having to find a different beach to visit as we couldn’t find anywhere close enough to park. Don’t make the same mistake I did!

Most people access the beach from the north end. There is level access to get onto the beach, and there are several sets of steps dotted along the top of the beach to access the sand from other points down to the south end.

Fistral Beach Facilities

It won’t surprise you that we are going to start listing the facilities on Fistral Beach with surfing. The two headlands at each end of the beach work as a funnel for the waves, which results in fantastic surfing conditions – it’s a great place to learn, and Fistral has got you covered here.

The Fistral Beach Surf School is based right there on the beach, and there are a whole host of other companies that can provide you with surf lessons in the area. You’ll see plenty of groups taking their first steps into the world of surfing all along the beach , so don’t worry if you are a novice – you certainly won’t be alone.

Right next to the surf school, at the north entrance, is the main complex – the International Surfing Centre. This is the main hub of, not just the beach, but of British Surfing. Here you’ll find everything you might need for a full day at the beach.

You really are spoilt for choice when it comes to food and drink – fancy a quick pasty from Pasty Shack, or pizza and cider from The Stable? Maybe you fancy a beautiful sit-down meal at The Fish House or Rick Steins? Maybe a chilled out drink and snack at the Fistral Beach Bar?

All of that is available to you, with stunning views out to sea. The level of choice and quality of the food must be unrivalled on any other beach in the UK.

Forgotten your bucket and spade?

Don’t worry, there is a traditional Seashore Beach Shop there, selling everything you’ll need from towels to sunglasses. But that is far from it when it comes to retail at Fistral.

There is a Fat Face shop and an Ann’s Cottage shop, both selling trendy surf and skate wear – including equipment. There is even a lifestyle shop, Bon Bon, which specialises in really cool jewellery and clothes.

Finally, there is the surf and beach hire shop, at which you can get everything you could possibly need to maximise your enjoyment at Fistral – from wetsuits to sunloungers. Like I said – they’ve got you covered.

On top of all this, they also host incredible events at Fistral. The highlight being Boardmasters – the biggest surf festival in Europe which takes place every August. Fistral is just one of the venues, but it’s the main hub of the surfing action, as well as art installations, some live music and workshops.

Fistral is always rammed during Boardmasters, but it is an incredible experience if you can cope with the crowds.

Why We Love Fistral Beach

We love Fistral Beach for much the same reason that everyone else seems to love Fistral Beach – it’s simply one of the best beaches in the UK. It has everything.

Fistral isn’t just a beach that you might head to for a couple of hours to keep the kids happy – this is a beach that you can spend an entire week at without getting bored. You could have a different meal every day if you wanted to, and by the end of the week you would be a competent surfer!

It’s a busy beach, there’s no getting around that, and that might put some people off – but our family loves it.

There is such a pleasant atmosphere there, it’s so lovely to see families and children of all ages having such a great time – whether they’re heading into the sea with their boards or just burying their dad in a massive hole… The satisfying buzz of conversation and laughter all adds to the experience.

It’s no surprise to us that Fistral Beach has such a fantastic reputation – it is one that has been earned over the years, and they keep adding new additions to the hub to keep ahead of the game.

Take a trip to Fistral beach. You won’t regret it.

Away from the hustle, bustle and stag dos of Newquay Town Centre, there is Watergate Bay Beach – something that once may have been described as an uncovered gem, but is now one of the most popular beaches in the area. And you can see why.

The thing about Watergate is that it is so vast, that even when it is at its busiest during the summer, it doesn’t feel busy. There is plenty of room for you to have a quiet bit of sand, all to yourselves.

This huge stretch of coast also provides some excellent surfing conditions, which is what its popularity has built from. You can partake in all kinds of water sports here, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking that this is all Watergate Bay beach has to offer – there is plenty more than that as we will see.

My family and I cannot get enough of this beach. Whenever we are in the area, we make sure we spend time here, as it has something for all of us. In this article we are going to provide you with all the information that you’ll need to fall in love with it too as well as helping you to plan the perfect day at Watergate Bay.

How To Get To Watergate Bay Beach

Watergate Bay beach is located around 3 miles north of Newquay – it would take you about an hour to walk from the town centre, or 10 minutes to drive. It’s close to Newquay’s small airport – if you decide you want to fly down!

To be honest, access to the area isn’t great. There is one road in and out, the B3276, which winds through the Cornish countryside before almost out of nowhere, the little bay appears before you with hotels and surf hire shops. It is a lovely little place.

Crucially, for beach-goers, there is a huge car park. Most people that visit the beach do so by car, simply because it is in the middle of nowhere. The remaining visitors will be staying in the hotels and apartments that overlook the beach.

Whatever the time of day, you will find space in one of the car parks. There is a lot of land nearby, and the fields surrounding the area are all used as car parks or overflow car parks, so you don’t need to worry about getting a space. Jus be aware that the later you get there, the further you may have to walk to get to the beach.

All the car parks seem to have independent coffee vans though, so you can pick up a drink before you head down.

The main car park, which is opposite the entrance to the beach, is the one we prefer. There are some public toilets located there (always helpful when you’re travelling with young children), but it is right on a nasty bend which can mean that it is difficult to get out of if there is a buildup of traffic – which can be the case at the end of the day.

You might be better using one of the car parks a little further away if you want a quicker exit.

To get on to the beach, there is a ramp that goes all the way down to the sand from the main road, which makes it easily accessible for people. You’ll see a lot of little trollies and wagons with families packing up all of their shelters, toys and snacks!

If you are walking, there are a number of coastal paths that lead to the beach, and you can head down to the sand further up the beach if you take one of these routes.

Watergate Bay Beach Facilities

As I indicated above, Watergate Bay is best known for its excellent surfing conditions. All year round, you’ll find enthusiastic surfers racing into the sea, hoping to catch the perfect wave.

Due to the position of the beach, facing to the West, Watergate catches some great Atlantic swells, which is why it is so popular with surfers.

If you are a novice, but are keen to get involved, there are three main surf instructor companies that are based down there by the beach – O’Neill Surf Academy, The Extreme Academy and Westcountry Surf School. You can just hire equipment if you don’t want to take part in the lessons, but if you are starting from scratch, a lesson will speed up the learning process.

It’s not just surfing that these guys can help you with – Watergate Bay is also popular with kite surfers, paddle boarders, wave skiers, bodyboarders and hand planers (don’t worry if you have to look up what some of those are – I certainly did).

You can get all the equipment you need to take part in any of these water sports, and have lessons with experts as well. It’s always advisable to book in advance, especially in the summer, as it can get very busy down there.

There is much more to Watergate than water sports, though. The main attraction is the sheer size of the beach – stretching two miles along the coast, with beautiful golden sand.

It’s the kind of beach that never feels busy, even when there are hundreds of people there. You can always find a little quiet spot for you and your family by just walking for a few minutes away from the main hubbub.

That area is where you’ll find all the main facilities, though. The Beach Hut is right there on the beach, a restaurant that serves relaxed, but excellent quality food and drink – it’s like a high-end cafe, offering everything from cooked breakfasts to salads and ‘fish of the day’ dishes.

It isn’t that cheap (you’re looking at between £15-£20 for a main meal), but it is of excellent quality, and the views of the beach are wonderful.

There are other options, though. At the top of the ramp that leads onto the beach, you’ll find a pizza bar. There are few benches there if you want to sit down, but they are all served ‘to go’, so you can take a pizza down to the beach, or pick one up after a long day to take home with you. They also serve some great beers and other drinks there.

Add to that the various coffee and ice-cream vans – there is everything you will need for a lovely day there at Watergate Bay Beach.

Why We Love Watergate Bay Beach

The main reason that I love taking my family to Watergate Bay beach is that it has something for everyone.

My wife and I have had surf lessons there, which were as fun as they were rewarding. The first time I stood up on a surfboard, albeit for about 2.3 seconds, was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life! In that moment I understood why people spend hours floating in the sea, waiting for the perfect wave.

My boys are too young to take up surfing, but they love this beach just as much as we do. Their favourite bit is a stream that runs down from the top of the beach into the sea. We take our spades to construct dams and pools off this stream, we race boats and balls down it and we paddle in it.

Then we grab an ice cream for the kids, and a beer for the adults. We sit on the beach, in a nice little quiet spot, and look out at the surfers, the kites, the swimmers, and the hundreds of people having a great time. Last time we were there we got chatting to families from Scotland and families from New York – without exception, everyone loved this beach.

Watergate Bay beach is a bit out of the way, which is why it works perfectly. It never feels as busy as the beaches closer to the town centre, and they have everything you need right there for you.

Have a day out at Watergate Bay – you won’t regret it.

Maybe you want some decent surf, or rock pools and caves to explore? Or perhaps a restaurant and bar, so that you can take in your surroundings with a drink and some food?

Well, whatever you want from a beach, I’m pretty sure Lusty Glaze beach has it.

It’s Newquay’s worst kept secret.

About Lusty Glaze

The winner of Britain’s Best Beach according to the Sunday Times, plus it was named Cornwall’s Most Instagrammable Wedding Venue, which may be a pretty obscure sounding award, but it goes some way to illustrate what Lusty Glaze has to offer – it’s a truly stunning beach.

The ever-growing reputation means that this is often a busy beach, particularly during the peak summer period.

But that shouldn’t put you off, in fact, the number of people on a busy day just seems to add to the wonderful atmosphere – the laughter of children and the satisfying hum of chatter from holiday makers.

A quintessentially British experience, but on a beach packed full of modern amenities – what’s not to like?

I was lucky enough to have family living around the corner from Lusty when I was growing up, so this is a beach with many happy memories attached to it – and it is one that I love taking my children to now.

Allow me to guide you through everything that you need to know for a perfect day at Lusty Glaze beach and walk you through exactly why it is such a special place.

How To Get To Lusty Glaze

The beach is located under a mile outside of Newquay Town Centre, around a 15 minute walk from the train station, just the other side of the Barrowfields.

It is tucked away behind residential roads, which I think adds to the charm of the place – it’s not difficult to find, but you need to know that it is there in the first place.

There is a large main car park on Lusty Glaze Road, which can get busy in high season, but you should find space there whatever time of day you arrive. You can expect to pay around £12 for a full day’s parking, which is pretty standard for a beach car park. The good news is that you don’t need cash to pay – you can use your phone.

There is plenty of street parking nearby, but just be aware that many of the roads will require residential permits to park on – so make sure you have a look around before you abandon your car! For this reason, it’s probably less hassle and stress to use the main car park which is very close to the entrance to the beach.

That’s the main appeal of that car park – its proximity to the beach. You see, the main challenge you’ll face is not finding your way to Lusty Glaze Beach, but finding your way onto Lusty Glaze Beach.

There are 133 steps that you’ll need to negotiate to find yourself down on the sand, and the stairway is pretty narrow along the way, so you often find yourself having to step to one side to let people pass. As a kid, this was all part of the adventure, but it is important to be aware of when you plan what to take down there – pack light, and be aware that small children and the elderly might struggle.

Trust me, though, it is more than worth the effort, even if you need to take a few minutes to catch your breath when you get down there (and when you come up again!)

Lusty Glaze Beach Facilities

Lusty Glaze is a privately owned beach, and has been for centuries. It was actually originally an iron ore mine – which made it an attractive proposition for investors and ownership was transferred from the Crown to its first owner for the princely sum of £100.

This decision, way back in the 19th century, has given Lusty Glaze a fairly unique history, turning to focus on tourism in 1921 as a ‘bathing resort’ – and this classic British seaside feel is still felt today with the purpose-built wooden huts that line the top of the beach.

By 1999, the beach had become run-down, but it was purchased by its current owner – Tracy Griffiths – who has transformed the beach into the integral part of the local community and tourism industry that it is today.

Hospitality has become the main focus for the beach. The café is open daily from 9.30am-4.30pm, and it offers incredible waffles, pizza and drinks. There is a wood-burner in there, so it is a really cosy place to go in the winter months – just sit in the warm and watch the waves crash into the rocks. It’s mesmerising.

The café is just the start, though – they host The Pickled Chef. This is a pop-up dining experience with incredible seafood and inventive dishes. It’s more than you probably expect from a beach-side restaurant, but it really works. It’s a proper ‘foodie’ experience, and one I would urge you to give a go.

There is a bar there as well, which is the perfect setting for a beer in the sun, or a glass of wine before you head back up into the real world! They manage to get the vibe just right – it’s a nice, stylish place, but with a chilled-out beach atmosphere. The sort of place you could sit and enjoy for hours.

If you don’t want to tear yourself away from the beach at the end of the day, they do have a couple of accommodation options – The Cottage and The Chalet. These are both situated right there on the beach – you wake up in the morning and you’re greeted by nothing but sea and sand (maybe sun too if you are lucky).

These aren’t cheap options, but they are really special little hideaways – you don’t get many chances to stay on a beach like this in the UK.

These accommodation options are ideal to compliment the wedding packages that they offer. Getting married on Lusty Glaze Beach has become incredibly popular in recent years, and you can see why. It’s a beautiful setting, with fantastic facilities. Unfortunately, it was out of our budget when I married my wife!

Why We Love Lusty Glaze

I went back to Lusty Glaze for the first time in a long time a few years ago. I had such fond memories of going there when I was young, that I was bracing myself for some disappointment – things rarely live up to your childhood recollections of them.

Well, the opposite happened this time around. Lusty has transformed itself into so much more than I remembered. The bar, the café, the restaurant – it is more than I expected, and the key thing is that they do it so well – everything is pitched just right.

I have two boys, both under 6, and the entire family always has a great time at Lusty Glaze. There is so much to do, that we never seem to have the same day twice – whether we’re exploring rock pools, or playing football, or eating pizza, or paddling in the sea, or playing hide and seek in the caves, or watching the surfers, or staying down there for dinner – you get the picture!

And all of those steps on the way back up seem to make bedtime go a lot quicker than usual!

There are few places in Cornwall to see a better sunset than at Sennen Beach. The beach that faces due west directly in to the full force of the Atlantic ocean is well equipped for catching those instagrammable sunset vibes most of the year round – but there’s so much more to this large Cornish beach than just its picturesque scenery.

Indeed, Sennen beach (that sits in Sennen Cove) is one of the most popular spots in South West Cornwall for surfers and dare devil body boarders. Indeed, the geography and elements combine for a perfect storm here and so the beach (and more so the ocean) is filled with adrenaline seekers all year round – and it gets pretty busy during peak summer.

It’s an ideal spot for families with young and older children alike – and at low tide the beach is vast – so even in the height of summer you can usually find a space to set up your mini camp.

Our girls simply love it here. And, we’ve got to say that we do too – it’s a great contrast to the smaller beaches and coves that litter the southerly facing shoreline.

Let’s take a look at all the key information you need for a successful visit to Sennen beach, before I give you a little more of an idea as to why we love it so much.

How To Get To Sennen Beach

Sennen beach is one of the easier beaches to navigate to whether you are arriving by car, foot or public transport. It sits just off the A30 and is well signposted. It’s just before or after Lands End (depending on which way you are heading) and you can’t really miss the turn off from the main road.

If you are heading there in the summer season then the Coaster also drops off and picks up at Sennen every hour.

For those arriving by car, there are two car parks at sea level and then an overspill carpark that sits at the top of the hill (on the right just after you turn off the A30) – this is perfect for those arriving later in the day and those with camper vans or larger vehicles. The good news is that there is always somewhere to park if you are heading to Sennen.

Our preferred carpark is the one further along the seafront near the harbour – as there is often a space here as it’s a little more hidden away and most people try to park next to the beach bar right next to the beach entrance. The beach bar car park (first turn on the right as you come to the bottom of the hill) gets very busy in summer though and can be tricky to navigate with so much traffic. We avoid it.

Every time we have arrived (even in peak summer) pre-11am we have managed to park on that second car park. You can pay via card or app too which is handy.

For those walking you can take the coastal path, with Lands End to Sennen being a popular route (or vice versa).

Sennen Beach Facilities

As mentioned, Sennen Beach is very popular with surfers and body boarders. So you will find everything surf related pretty well catered for – including a surf school and surf hire facilities (including wet suit hire). They run beginner to advanced classes and booking is advised.

Sennen Beach Bar (open from Easter to October usually) gets mixed reviews – but there is no denying the vibe and the views from here – they are some of the best in Cornwall. It’s not cheap, but it’s not crazily overpriced either and we had the pizzas which were actually pretty good. We’ve always found the staff to be super nice too.

They serve fast food and drinks from the lower hatch to keep the hoards of beach goers fed and watered.

The beach is lifeguarded during the day during the tourist season with 4 or 5 lifeguards usually on duty at any one time. They are very vigilant and due to the fast moving tide they are constantly moving the flags and assessing safety for everyone.

Along the harbour front you will find a pub with a front facing beer garden, a wonderful ice cream shop, a little cafe, a fish and chip shop and an RNLI shop too. There are toilets at both car parks and they are pretty well maintained considering how many people are using them.

There are few beaches that are so well equipped to deal with the masses of tourists as Sennen beach is.

Why We Love Sennen Beach

If you are anywhere local to Sennen Beach (and by that I mean within a 30 minute drive – we were a 5 minute drive) then it’s well worth a visit. During a two week holiday we will come to Sennen around 5-6 times during the day, and a few times at least during the evening.

Tip – If you pay for a 24 hour ticket you can leave and come back with your car if you wish, which is handy for beach by day, sunset by night – with a break in the middle).

The reason we visit so often is that our girls (aged 11 and 7 during our last visit) absolutely love it here. They have plenty of wide open space to play beach games and make sandcastles (when the tide is out), but above all else, they just can’t get enough of the waves.

Even when the waves are 9 feet tall, they generally break a few times and our youngest daughter is content to board on the last bit of surf as it breaks again practically on land. Our eldest daughter is a little more adventurous.

Ideal conditions are around 3-4 feet waves for body boarders and you’ll often get conditions like this. It is very very rare for there to be no surf at Sennen.

We tend to take it in turns to board with the girls – usually for an hour to 90 minutes at a time. So whilst one of the parents is in the water with them, the other can sleep or chill in peace – not a bad deal.

The added benefit is that the kids are exhausted come the evening so they hit the sack without a complaint.

Before bed though, finishing the day with a drive back down to the beach (with a usually half empty car park) and catching the sunset and sipping on a beer or cocktail in the beach bar, or even just taking a flask down to sit on a rock on the beach and watch the hardcore surfers, is the perfect end to a perfect Sennen day.

There really is something for everyone at Sennen – and if you’re lucky you might even spot a seal or a dolphin.

We set out on an overcast day to explore more of the south west corner of Cornwall. Our aim was to find Porthchapel beach and after trekking through fields and climbing down a cliff face we found a lovely, quiet little spot on this most dramatic and exquisitely beautiful of south Cornwall beaches.

This sheltered southerly facing cove is surrounded by rugged, weathered granite cliffs and has golden sand scattered with large granite boulders that are ideal to perch on as you take in the stunning scenery.

It’s certainly not for the faint hearted with powerful waves crashing around when conditions suit, and just the clamber down the steps and rocks means it’s not a suitable destination for those with mobility issues.

How to get to Porthchapel Beach

Porthchapel Beach is a small yet dramatic cove located between Porthcurno Beach and Porthgwarra Cove.

When we first visited, we felt adventurous and took a small footpath from where we were staying, in the little village of Trethewey, to join the coast path, which at times reminded us of a scene in a horror movie, as we battled our way through fields of corn taller than all of us to reach our destination.

However, it is also easily reached from the coastal path travelling west from Porthcurno or east from Land’s End.

If you don’t want to walk too far, you can park in a small carpark next to St Levan Church and follow the path, for about 5 to 10 minutes, which winds through a wooded valley until you reach the coastal path. For anyone not staying local this is probably the best way to access Porthchapel beach and is a glorious walk in itself.

From here, it is a very steep scramble down the rocks to get to the beach so it is wise to wear sturdy footwear and not be carrying too much baggage, as you need both hands to help you climb down safely.

Once you’ve managed to negotiate the huge boulders that you clamber down on to, you’ll usually be rewarded by a practically empty beach. The fact that it is hard to access, like Nanjizal beach, means that you often only have to share it with a few people that have also made the effort to descend the steep cliffs.

High Tide

At high tide, the soft white sand can almost be completely covered by the sea so it’s worth checking tide timetables before setting off.

The first time we visited the tide was coming in, which when combined with a southerly wind, produced some very dramatic waves. We sat for ages just watching the waves crash on to the beach and ricochet off the massive boulders.

Our daughters enjoyed the thrill of jumping the waves and at times running away from them, but you need to keep a close eye on little ones as there is no life guard and the waves can be extremely powerful. One little girl on the beach was swept away by a particularly strong wave and was dragged into the rocks. Luckily, she only cut her knee.

Also be careful to leave the beach before the path back to the coastal path is submerged which often happens at high tide. It can sometimes feel a bit like playing a game of chicken with the sea, moving back on the rocks while watching the tide come in. The person who is brave enough to stay on the beach the longest wins!

Low Tide

At low tide, more of the gorgeous, golden sand is revealed and if the water is calm it’s a beautiful place to swim. It shelves gently off so is shallow enough for children to paddle safely at the waters’s edge. If you time it right you will have plenty of time to enjoy a picnic on the soft sand before you need to retreat to the rocks.

Water Sports

We have witnessed some very brave people bodyboarding at Porthchapel beach on a particularly windy day when the waves were absolutely huge.

However, you would need to be a really strong swimmer and know exactly what you were doing as there are no life guards and many rocks protruding which could be lethal. An extreme sport that I don’t want to take part in but which was entertaining and at times hair raising to watch!

When you are finally ready to leave, or are forced off the beach by the encroaching tide, be careful to take the ascent slowly as it can be very slippy. If you’ve had enough beach time then return back down the path to the car park after having a quick peek at St Levan’s Well.

The Well of St Levan

St Levan’s well sits on the cliff top just above Porthchapel beach and the water from the well is still used for baptisms at the St Levan church today.

The well is named after the Celtic Saint Selevan who was born in St Buryan in the 6th century. According to legend, drinking the water from this well can cure toothache and eye disease. If you sleep in the well it would be very uncomfortable but would also greatly improve your chances of being cured!!

This little well is worth a quick visit on your way back up to the coastal path and while you pause to catch your breath there is a great view of the cove and out to sea.

If want to visit more places near by, then you might want to take the walk east to the Minack Theatre where you get some amazing views of Porthcurno Beach and Pedn Vounder as well as the iconic theatre itself.

In the other direction, the next cove you come to is Porthgwarra – a small inlet with a cobbled slipway.

Its claim to fame is that it was the location for filming the scene where Ross Poldark goes skinny dipping, in the television series Poldark! But the main attraction for me is the beautiful views and cute, little cafe that serves hot and cold drinks and a selection of snacks.

Whether you visit Porthchapel as part of your journey along the coastal path or make it the main attraction, its a beautiful hidden gem in the rugged scenery of the south Cornish coastline. It is definitely worth the effort to climb down to the beach and fully enjoy its true beauty.

Porthcurno Beach is one of the reasons we have returned to Cornwall so many times.

The first time we visited we were totally amazed. You could easily mistake it for a Caribbean beach with its golden sands and beautiful turquoise waters set against a backdrop of striking cliffs. The fact that it sits at the South West tip of the UK is pretty mind blowing given its unique breathtaking beauty.

In fact, when I first shared pictures on Instagram people actually thought we were abroad.

Arriving By Car

Porthcurno is accessed from the A30 whether travelling from Land’s End or Penzance.

Once leaving the A30 the roads do become quite narrow and windy at times but it is definitely worth the sometimes hair raising journey. When you arrive, there is quite a large car park which you pay for on departure.

(Editor note: DO NOT PAY ON ARRIVAL – this will cause you to be charged twice as you will need to pay on exit) – this is a new system installed in August 2022.

Just next to the car park is a small cafe, ice cream kiosk and some toilets so its perfect for a family day out as you have all the facilities you might need.

The car park can fill up in peak season so if you want to guarantee a spot you may want to arrive before 10.30am. That being said, the turnover of cars is pretty high so if you are prepared to wait you can usually find a spot.

Getting the Open Top Bus

If you don’t fancy risking driving to Porthcurno then the Coaster (an open top bus that goes along the coast from Penzance to St Ives and vice versa) stops right next to the car park for Porthcurno Beach.

As well as taking away the stress of driving on Cornish roads, you also get the chance to fully appreciate the breathtaking views of the rugged coastline.

The Walk to Porthcurno Beach

The beach is accessed from the car park by a sandy path (about 250m) with relatively steep steps down to the beach. From the car park the beach is hidden from sight so when you follow the path and get your first view of this stunning beach it always takes your breath away.

The easiest way down to the beach is taking the path to the left of the lifeguard hut which takes you down steep steps. If you don’t fancy the steps there is a path to the right which is a slope with a rope handrail to hold onto but in the soft sand its still quite tricky.

Beautiful Porthcurno Cove

Porthcurno beach itself has beautiful golden sand made up of tiny fragments of shells which have been pounded by the sea over millions of years.

It is protected from the wind by the towering cliffs on either side of the cove making it easy to find a sheltered spot on even the most blustery of days. However, the crystal clear water is what really struck me the first time we visited – with it stretching out as far as you can see and glistening in the sunlight.

There is always plenty of room on Porthcurno beach even in the height of summer as it is quite remote and the parking options are limited. There is usually plenty of space to set up camp for the day.

There is also enough room to play the beach games my children love which isn’t always possible on some of Cornwall’s most popular beaches.

Porthcurno at High Tide

At high tide there is still plenty of soft golden sand to relax on but the waves can be quite strong and there are dangerous currents so its important to always follow the instructions of the lifeguards who are there May to September from 10am until 6pm daily.

My daughters love the excitement of dancing in and out of the huge waves that crash on the shore, but you need to keep an eye on even older children as the beach steeply shelves off at the high tide mark. Also there can be strong rip currents which can drag you out to sea so do keep an eye on children paddling.

At Low Tide

At low tide, you sometimes get access (depending on tide height) to what we call ‘the secret beach’ – otherwise known as Pedn Vounder.

The lifeguards put up signs advising when it is safe to walk or wade to this little beach to the left of Porthcurno (as you look out to sea). It’s quite magical when you pass the rocks and a pretty much deserted stretch of sand is revealed – quite a contrast to the buzzing atmosphere of Porthcurno Beach.

There are a few little caves to explore and we really enjoyed the peace and quiet that it offers as you stroll along the water’s edge, through the little pools left behind, enjoying a bit of beach combing.

Be careful to return by the time the signs advise, unless you are a very strong swimmer, as the water can get very rough particularly as the tide is going out. When you are on Pedn Vounder you get the best view of the other totally unique aspect of this beach, the Minack Theatre.

World Renowned Minack Theatre

The Minack Theatre is actually carved into the cliffs that sit above Porthcurno beach and was dreamt up and created by Rowena Cade. She transformed the cliff face mostly with her own hands and hard work into the most spectacular theatre I have ever visited.

The backdrop is the Atlantic Ocean and visiting is a truly magical experience. It can be accessed from the road and there is a car park next to the theatre at the top of the cliff. Also there are steep steps cut into the cliff that allow you to walk up from Porthcurno Beach to get to the theatre which perches at the top of the cliff. Anyone can walk through the grounds (and it’s part of the coastal path) but you will need to book in advance to access the theatre itself and only ticket holders can park there.

Why We Love Porthcurno

Porthcurno is one of our favourite places to go to with a picnic and enjoy a family beach day. The children are happy playing in the water or on the beautiful sand.

We absolutely love the scenery and there are all the facilities you might need. It never fails to impress me every time we return and I hope to go back many times in the future.

Porthcurno is an idyllic beach at the tip of Cornwall’s rugged South Coast that is definitely worth visiting!
