We all know Soho is one cool place to be. It might be pocket-sized, but it’s London’s dynamite for diverse cuisines, entertainment, shopping, and culture. When it comes to finding the best restaurants Soho can offer, there’s a lot to choose from.

As a real fan of food and all things dining, I love going out in Soho. You know you’re there with the sounds and scents of all this wonderful food enjoyed by the buzz of people all having a good time. And there’s SO much on offer.

But that’s kind of the problem – where do you choose to go? So many options, and only one digestive system, one budget, and one occasion to get it right.

Here are my favourite places to eat in Soho. There’s a little bit of everything here, so everyone’s happy.

Fine Dining for Special Occasions

Quo Vadis

Menu: Refined British classics with seasonal ingredients (set lunch £35, dinner around £65 per person)

Where: Historic townhouse on Dean Street – you can’t miss the iconic neon sign

Venue: Elegant but unstuffy, with lovely stained glass windows and proper white tablecloths

Serving times: Lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday

Dietary requirements: They’ll happily accommodate with advance notice

Managed to snag a table here to celebrate my friend’s engagement and it was such a treat. The smoked eel sandwich is their signature dish for good reason – sounds a bit weird, I wasn’t sure at first. But it was absolutely divine. Small but perfectly formed, rich and smoky with a hint of horseradish that just cuts through beautifully.

Service was spot on – attentive without hovering, and they made the occasion feel special without any cringe-worthy attention. The wine list is excellent but not intimidating, and the sommelier suggested a gorgeous English white that paired perfectly with my roast chicken.

Of course, fine dining never comes cheap – our bill came to about £150 for two with wine – but for a special occasion, it delivers. The set lunch is much more affordable if you’re watching the pennies but still want the experience.

Dietary requirements: They can cater for some allergies but it’s quite a set menu

If you’ve never had omakase before, it’s essentially where you put yourself in the chef’s hands – they serve whatever’s freshest that day, piece by piece, right in front of you.

The nigiri was some of the best I’ve had in London – each perfect little mouthful dressed with just the right amount of soy or a dab of freshly grated wasabi. And the chef explains each piece as he serves it, which I found really interesting. There was this one scallop nigiri that was so sweet and delicate I actually closed my eyes when I ate it!

The dining experience here is pretty unique. Firstly, it only has about 10 seats. It’s very intimate, where you’ll find yourself chatting with the chefs and even other diners. It’s not really the place to go if you want a private dining space. Instead it feels like you’re at a dinner party hosted by extremely talented friends.

Independent & Unusual Cuisines

These smaller, independent places might look unassuming from the outside, but they’re serving some of the most exciting food in Soho.

Serving times: Lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday

Dietary requirements: Loads of veggie options, clear allergen info

Popped in here on a whim one Thursday night and managed to grab the last two seats at the counter. The menu is inspired by the Barbary Coast of North Africa, and it’s all about bold, punchy flavours that make your taste buds do a little happy dance.

We ordered way too much (as usual) but hey, I’m glad we did really. The charred octopus was out of this world – perfectly tender with this smoky harissa that had just the right amount of heat. The labneh with za’atar was phenomenal too. Their flatbread comes straight from the clay oven in front of you, all puffy and warm, and it’s the perfect scoop for all those lovely sauces.

It’s not a place for a quiet, intimate dinner – you’re sitting right up at the counter with everyone else, and it gets pretty lively. But that’s half the fun! The chefs clearly love what they do, and their energy is infectious.

I’ve been absolutely obsessed with this place since it opened. If you’ve never had a hopper before, it’s this amazing bowl-shaped pancake made from fermented rice batter. You crack an egg in the middle and use it to scoop up all sorts of incredible curries and sambols.

I managed to get back there last month with my sister and we shared the bone marrow varuval (sounds intimidating but it’s really, really good) and the black pork kari which had this depth of flavour that’s hard to describe. The egg hopper itself is a work of art – crispy round the edges and soft in the middle where the egg sits.

One tip – don’t wear your favourite white top. The curries are rich and vibrant, and I always seem to end up with at least a small splash on me (worth it, though!).

Love this place. The restaurant has an amazing story behind it – Imad is a Syrian refugee who started with supper clubs before opening this proper restaurant. And you can really feel the love and passion that goes into the food.

We went for the mezze feast and it was a proper spread – the fattoush salad was so fresh and zingy, and the muhammara (a red pepper and walnut dip) was addictive. But the absolute star was the shish taouk – these incredibly tender chicken skewers that had clearly been marinating for ages.

This place is so special for how warm and welcoming it feels. Imad himself often comes out to chat to diners, and there’s a real sense that you’re being welcomed into someone’s home rather than just another restaurant. It’s a novelty to be made to feel like a guest rather than a customer.

Serving times: Lunch and dinner daily

Dietary requirements: Veggie options, vegan cheese available, gluten-free bases

This is my go-to spot when I’m craving comfort food but don’t want to spend a fortune. The pizzas are the real deal – proper Neapolitan style with that lovely puffy, charred crust and minimal but quality toppings.

I’m a bit boring and usually go for the margherita (you can really tell a good pizza place by how they do the basics), but their double pepperoni with spicy honey (shown above) is a real flavour bomb if you’re feeling more adventurous. Oh, and definitely try the nutella pizza ring for dessert – it’s obscenely good.

The Dean Street branch is quite small and always busy, so be prepared to wait at peak times or try their Kingly Court spot which is a bit bigger. But even when there is a queue, it moves pretty quickly, and the staff are super efficient.

I’m not a vegetarian and I absolutely loved it here! It’s run by the Hare Krishna temple, and while it’s super no-frills (you queue up, canteen-style), the food is absolutely delicious and ridiculously good value.

For about £8 you can get a massive thali plate with dahl, rice, subji (veg curry), salad, and a sweet. I had lunch there and their chilli paneer was a ten out of ten – spicy, tangy, and somehow both crispy and tender.

Don’t expect fancy service or ambiance – it’s bright, basic and sometimes a bit chaotic. But the food is made with love and the portions are really generous. It’s mostly takeaway, but there are a few tables if you want to eat in.

Kingly Court is my saviour when I’m meeting friends who can never agree on what to eat (a common connundrum). It’s this really rather pretty three-story courtyard with restaurants around the edges and seating in the middle.

I’m a bit obsessed with Le Bab on the top floor – they do these amazing posh kebabs that are a million miles from your 3am doner. Their chicken shish with garlic toum and pickled cucumber is my absolute favourite. And for dessert, the Crumble Rumble place on the ground floor does these gorgeous hot crumbles with custard that are perfect when it’s chilly outside.

The vibe changes depending on when you go – lunchtimes are busy with shoppers and local workers, while evenings (especially weekends) have more of a buzzy, pre-night-out feel. In summer, they open up all the doors and it feels very continental sitting outside with a glass of wine.

Overview

As you can see there’s so many exciting options to choose from. These few only touch the surface of what’s available in Soho – I’ve tried so many. And I have no doubt there’ll be more popping up in time.

But for now, these are my favourite, and I hope you love them too! Just remember that the really popular spots like Hoppers and The Barbary don’t take bookings for dinner and can have epic queues, so either get there early (like, really early) or be prepared to leave your number and have a drink nearby while you wait.

Looking for somewhere amazing to eat around London Bridge? Honestly, this little pocket of London has turned into a real foodie heaven over the last few years. Here are what I consider to be the best restaurants around the London Bridge area – from easy pasta joints to high-class places for those special occasions.

What I love about eating out in London Bridge is how it gives you absolutely everything – those incredible Borough Market stalls on one end, Bermondsey Street’s independent gems on the other, and then all those twinkly Thames-side restaurants with knockout views.

London holds a special place in my heart for a number of reasons, and I’ve spent countless times at London Bridge – so I’ve had plenty of chances to eat my way through most of the restaurants around here. Some are perfect for date nights, others are brilliant for catching up with friends, and I’ve thrown in a couple of budget-friendly spots too.

Old and new; convenient to Michelin starred; and every cuisine you can think of.

And as a bonus, London Bridge is dead easy to get to – right next to London Bridge station. That’s partly why I end up meeting friends here so often – it’s just convenient for everyone.

My good friend had her 30th birthday dinner here last month and it was just incredible. The whole experience is built around the idea of storytelling through food, and chef Tom Sellers really knows how to create a memorable meal.

The famous beef-dripping candle was hands down my favourite part – they bring it to your table looking like an actual candle, but it’s beef fat that melts into this gorgeous dipping sauce for fresh sourdough bread. So simple but absolute genius!

The staff were brilliant too – they explain every dish in a very friendly and knowledgable manner, and they made the birthday girl feel really special with some lovely extra touches.

Yes, it’s expensive (our bill came to about £350 for two with drinks), but it’s Michelin-starred and lives up to expectation. It’s exceptional for a really special celebration. Just make sure you book well in advance – I had to book nearly three months ahead for a Saturday night table!

Popped into Amora for a quick lunch last week and ended up staying for nearly three hours! The food is basically Greek small plates designed for sharing, and everything we ordered was soo good.

The grilled octopus was perfectly tender (not that rubbery welly texture you sometimes get), and their taramasalata is unbelievably good – very silky and smoky rather than that bright pink stuff from supermarkets.

If you’re after something a bit more special, their sister restaurant OMA is well worth the splurge. I took my parents there when they visited and the blue lobster tail with lemon verbena was one of the best things I’d had in a long time.

Agora’s much more affordable (about £30-40 per person) while OMA is definitely special occasion territory (more like £80-100 per head). The nice thing is you can get a taste of the same incredible flavours at either place.

The queues at Padella have become almost as famous as their pasta, but trust me – their pici cacio e pepe is worth the wait! I’ve probably eaten here more than any other restaurant in London, and it never disappoints.

There’s something so satisfying about watching the chefs rolling out fresh pasta while you’re waiting for your food. Everything’s made fresh daily, and you can really taste the difference. The menu’s quite small but that’s because they focus on doing a few things really well.

My usual order is the pici cacio e pepe (thick hand-rolled spaghetti with cheese and black pepper – sounds simple but it’s incredible) followed by the tagliatelle with beef ragù. And always get the burrata to start if it’s on the menu.

Top tip: download the Dojo app before you go, as you can join a virtual queue rather than standing around. Or do what I do and go for a late lunch around 2:30pm when you can usually walk straight in!

Went here last summer and it was perfect – busy enough to have atmosphere but quiet enough that me and my husband could actually hear each other talk! Flour and Grape is kind of like Padella’s more sophisticated older sister – still focused on amazing pasta but with a better wine list and slightly more polished vibe.

The conchiglie (shell pasta) with wild mushrooms, garlic and herb oil is my absolute go-to – deep, earthy flavours but still feels light somehow. Their homemade limoncello is dangerously good too, especially after a couple of glasses of wine!

It’s slightly pricier than Padella (around £30-40 per person with a glass of wine) but still amazing value for the quality. This place doesn’t take bookings, but the queue moves quickly and they’ll text you when your table’s ready so you can pop to a nearby pub while you wait.

Dietary requirements: Good for pescatarians, some veggie options but very meat-focused

If you go here at the weekend your mouth will still tingling from the chillies a few days later! Kolae specialises in Southern Thai food, which is way spicier and more intense than the Thai food you might be used to.

The grilled pork skewers with this sweet-spicy dipping sauce were absolutely insane – we ended up ordering a second round because they were so good. And their green curry is so authentic – really aromatic with Thai aubergines and that perfect balance of spicy, sweet and salty.

Just a warning though – when they say something’s spicy, they really mean it! I consider myself pretty good with heat but their jungle curry had me reaching for water every few seconds.

It’s a nice mid-range option – we paid about £35 each including a couple of drinks. It can get busy though, so it’s worth booking ahead if you can especially for evenings and weekends.

This little place doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it does some of the best Malaysian food I’ve had outside of Kuala Lumpur. Discovered it totally by accident one rainy evening, and it’s become a regular spot for me.

Their laksa is the real deal (as shown) – this massive bowl of spicy coconut broth with prawns, chicken, tofu and noodles. It’s so, so good. Perfect comfort food on a miserable London day! And don’t even get me started on their roti canai – so flaky and buttery with an amazing curry dipping sauce.

It’s family-run and you can really tell – the service is always so warm and they remember regulars’ orders. Really reasonable prices too – most mains are around £12-15.

Overview

For fancy places like Restaurant Story and Oma, definitely book well ahead – we’re talking weeks or even months for weekend slots. The casual spots like Padella and Flour and Grape don’t take bookings, but if you hit them at off-peak times (late afternoon or later in the evening) you’ll have a better chance of avoiding the queues.

Price-wise, you’ve got everything from budget-friendly (Padella and Sentosa will set you back about £20-30 per person) to proper splash-out territory (Restaurant Story is more like £150+ per head).

For more of a buzzy atmosphere, both Padella and Kolae have great energy, while Sentosa is perfect for a quieter, more intimate meal.

Most places are pretty good with dietary requirements these days, but Padella and Agora are particularly great for vegetarians, and Sentosa has lots of fish options if you don’t eat meat.

London is one the best cities – if not the best city – in the world. If you’re in London Bridge, any of the above will serve you (literally) very well indeed.

Covent Garden is easily one of my favourite places in London. The best restaurants in Covent Garden are all part of its allure, weaving in between shops, markets, history and landmarks.

I’ve been here for so many occasions, in all seasons – as a pitstop with friends before a show in the West End, some Christmas shopping around Covent Garden’s famous Christmas tree with the kids, or a summer’s day mooching around and sipping the odd cocktail.

But sometimes it can be overwhelming and choosing where to eat in Covent Garden can be tricky. Where will complement the day or evening just perfectly? I’ve tried most of the Covent Garden restaurants and cafes and here are my best restaurants you simply have to try.

1: Blacklock Covent Garden

Blacklock Covent Garden has been on my foodie hit list for a while now. I’m always in search of a good Sunday Dinner, and Blacklock goes big with their all-in roast. You get a mound of beef ribs, pork, and lamb, and all the trimmings.

All the meat – in fact, everything – tasted absolutely delicious, even the gravy. And this isn’t just on a Sunday. Even on a Monday this place has got the best atmosphere. It oozes classic British charm, and the staff make you feel at home. They clearly have a very good team who get on well and work efficiently.

Blacklock fills up fast, especially in the evenings and on weekends, so booking ahead is a good idea. Walk-ins are possible, but if you’re with friends or want to relax, a reservation is the way to go.

This place does offer vegetarian options, though it’s very much a chop house and an absolute winner for great cuts of meat. Even their steak sandwich looked amazing. I’d definitely love to come here again.

2: Ave Mario

Ave Mario has the most eclectic interiors. Bold and bright, with a dazzling display of so many spirits around their bar. The place bursts with colour and energy, and it’s just fun – great for a meal with friends or family.

I went for pizza, which had a thin, crisp crust and fresh toppings. Pasta dishes looked tempting too – my friend opted for a pasta dish and said it’s easily one of the best pasta meals she’s had, with rich sauces and decent sized portions.

The dessert menu is impossible to ignore, too.

Ave Mario is part of the Big Mumma’s chain of restaurants. It’s aimed at a younger demographic, generally speaking – the music is on the louder side, which is perfect for the atmosphere, but something to consider if you prefer things a little quieter and relaxed.

I personally really enjoyed being here, the food was great, and the staff were excellent. I wouldn’t bring my nan here. Friends and family though, it’s brilliant, and very popular – so make that reservation first.

3: Flat Iron Covent Garden

Flat Iron Covent Garden is your go-to if you love your steak. It’s a gorgeous restaurant, and drew me in right away with its original 1892 tiled frontage. Inside, the restored mosaic floor and English oak tables make it feel comfortable but also add history and craftsmanship.

It was really busy when we arrived (though not manic), so I was glad I’d reserved. I did overhear a couple who didn’t have a reservation – they were made to feel very welcome, but had a half-hour wait at the bar.

There’s a bar on each floor, and downstairs you’ll find a quirky underground garden – definitely something different. The restaurant is easy to find too, just off the Piazza.

The in-house butchery is what makes this place special. Scott, the master butcher, preps the steaks right there, which adds freshness and a bit of theatre to the meal. You choose your cut and how you like it, plus some sides, and mine really was cooked exactly to my liking, it was full of flavour.

The staff are relaxed yet super efficient and very helpful when it comes to choosing what you’d like. (Oh, and we were also treated to a rather splendid ice cream before we left!)

Location: 17-18 Henrietta St, London WC2E 8QH, United Kingdom

4: Crust Bros

Nestled on the edge of Covent Garden, the aptly named Crust Bros serves up epic crusts on hand stretched, freshly made pizzas. Despite visiting on a wet and windy Thursday evening, the place was busy and bustling, even at 6pm. Perfect for a pre or post theatre meal, located just a stone’s throw from the West End, it is a fairly large restaurant, but made to feel cosier with zones partially sectioned off to create distinct areas. A checkered black and white tiled floor and art deco style chandelier hung low over the middle of the room, gave it a stylish yet modern feel.

We had heard that the Bombas were worth a try, and they didn’t disappoint! We tried the blue cheese version of the brioche style donut, which was filled with gorgonzola and topped with hot honey, but there are also n’duja and lasagne options. Despite not liking blue cheese, both my children loved the Bomba, which is a testament to their tastiness!

We followed this with create your own pizzas, allowing you to build your own perfect option with a variety of sauces, cheeses, meats and veggies! With pizzas starting from just £15 and £7.45 for a kids meal, it certainly didn’t feel like central London prices.

A chronic sweet tooth, it was impossible to leave without sampling the pudding options. You could try a sweet version of the Bombas, which looked very tempting, but anytime I see tiramisu on a menu, I have to try it and this one was definitely worth the calories! Creamy, but light and full of flavour, it was a tiramisu like your Nonna used to make – if you had one!

With the restaurant filled with a real mix of people, from families to couples and groups of friends, Crust Bros appeal is clearly universal.

Location: 29 Bedford St, London WC2E 8JF

5: Dishoom Covent Garden

Dishoom is a popular branch of restaurants (in fact I’ve visited a few, and it’s one of the best restaurants in Birmingham, too). The one in Covent Garden has 1940s Bombay vintage décor and soft lighting, which creates a lovely space to scooch up in and enjoy some really good food.

The menu covers Indian street food and classic Bombay comfort dishes. My typical favourites are the blackened prawns, chillied chicken and grilled greens, though I love sampling other dishes here – they’re all authentic tastes and they’re served quickly and piping hot.

I’ve heard the staff can be a little ‘off’ here, but I couldn’t disagree more. It’s an incredibly busy restaurant yet our waiter was fast, efficient, didn’t rush us, and was very helpful and patient throughout.

Their signature items like the Bun Maska and Chai are a good shout if you’ve never been here before. The location makes it easy to stop by after a show or while exploring central London.

Word of warning though – definitely book. There was a long line of people waiting to be seated, and I was very relieved to have a reservation.

6: Balthazar

Balthazar is a really very special place to dine in Covent Garden. Right from the entrance, everything is grand and luxurious, and has a Parisian brasserie feel. It’s elegant but surprisingly not stuffy.

The restaurant sits in Covent Garden’s historic Flower Cellars, which gives it even more charm. I visited at Christmas time, and wow – I’d definitely recommend. They’d decorated inside and outside beautifully, it really got me in the mood.

The menu focuses on classic French food, and the breads and pastries are baked in-house daily. There’s a weekday prix fixe menu that’s ideal for lunch or a pre-theatre meal. The wine list is very impressive, and whatever time of day you visit it’ll have a wonderful atmosphere.

The dishes here were delicious, and the staff were wonderful. Kids are very welcome here, so don’t shy away from Balthazar if you’re in company of little ones – I saw a couple of families who were clearly having a great time, and their waitress was interacting with them a lot.

7: Frog by Adam Handling Restaurant Covent Garden

Frog by Adam Handling is all about bringing modern British cuisine to life, and I could actually watch the chefs at work from my table. The experience felt interactive, with staff happy to chat about each dish.

The tasting menu highlights seasonal British ingredients, with dishes that change based on what’s fresh. The menu often changes, so you never quite know what you’ll get, but it’s always focused on letting the produce shine.

This place has a well-earned Michelin star, and my goodness do they work for it – every dish looked like a work of art. Incredible levels of imagination have gone into everything here, even the cutlery and chinaware. I struggled to have a conversation without having to stop to marvel at each serving.

The interior feels slick and neat and very clean, with lots of quirky touches to the décor. I felt at ease, and the service struck a nice balance between friendly and highly professional.

There’s a private dining room called The Library for up to twelve people, if you’re celebrating. And if you want a creative cocktail, the Eve Bar below is definitely worth checking out.

Gaucho Covent Garden sits just steps from the Royal Opera House, and goes for a blend of Argentinian flair with a modern London twist. It’s always buzzing here, right from lunchtime through to late at night.

I went for the Argentinian steaks – they’re definitely a menu highlight. They also serve vegan options, so everyone can find something.

The wine list is carefully chosen to match the steaks, with bottles from Argentina and beyond. On Sundays they offer a big roast with unlimited Yorkshire puddings and gravy.

The bar is open late on weekends, and there are even secret tango performances on Friday and Saturday nights. The set menus for lunch and pre- or post-theatre are well-priced, so it’s easy to fit in a meal before a show.

Staff know the menu inside and out, and they’re quick to help with dietary needs.

9: Mildreds Covent Garden

I’ve mentioned a number of rather meaty-mad restaurants so far. Well, Mildreds Covent Garden is vegan heaven.

It’s just a short walk from Covent Garden and Leicester Square stations, so getting there was simple. The venue is like a romantic little place you’d see in a film. That being said, you’ll often find a queue outside, these days; it’s increasingly popular – so definitely make a reservation if you don’t want to wait in line.

The menu is entirely vegan and vegetarian, with options for every meal of the day – even a pre-theatre menu. They offer classics and more creative dishes, all focused on fresh ingredients. Staff were quick to help with gluten-free and soy-free options, which made things easy for my friend with allergies.

Outdoor seating is available, and I loved being able to bring my dog along thanks to their dog-friendly policy. They also have private dining rooms, and they had a small celebration going on when I was there.

If you’re a vegan or vegetarian, go here. If you’ve never tried vegan food, go here – it may just change your mind. Food is absolutely fantastic, and a solid pick for anyone in Covent Garden.

Location: 79 St Martin’s Ln, London WC2N 4AA, United Kingdom
Contact: +44 20 8066 8393

10: SUSHISAMBA

Sushisamba is a global collection of restaurants that you’ll find in Dubai, Vegas, LA, Singapore, and more, including our very own Covent Garden. You may be drawn here for the rooftop views alone. Its glass roof, designed by Eric Parry, lets in loads of natural light, overlooking the Piazza.

The menu’s a wild mix of Japanese, Brazilian, and Peruvian dishes, and I couldn’t wait to try it out. You can see the chefs at the open sushi bar at work, and I tried some grilled meats from the robata grill.

Each dish came out with bold, unusual flavours and was clearly meant for sharing. That worked perfectly for my group – lots of passing plates and trying bites of everything, which is a great way of testing your palate.

There are several spaces in this venue, including a bar under a living canopy ceiling. I loved being on the terrace with a cocktail, overlooking the market below.

It’s lively and all rather glamorous. If you want somewhere exciting to go with incredible food, views and service, head over here.

11: Hawksmoor Seven Dials

I finally made it to Hawksmoor Seven Dials after hearing so much about this place. It’s tucked inside an old brewery, and the atmosphere is warm and bustling – it’s another one in a great location here, whether you’ve been to the theatre or shopping.

The menu leans on classic British, and I couldn’t pass up the rump steak with beef-fat fries, which was full of flavour

They’ve got an express menu, which is a great option if you just want a quick bite before a show. I noticed it’s busiest in the late afternoon.

Sunday lunch is a big deal here, with a proper roast served until 5pm. On my last visit, the cauliflower cheese side totally stole the show, it was so good. Be warned, they do charge quite a bit for extra slices of meat on the Sunday roast.

Staff were great here on both occasions I visited, and standards were high in all aspects each time.

Summary

Covent Garden is such a wonderful place to spend time in if you can handle the tourist crowds. I’ve spent many times wandering in and out of all the shops, nooks and crannies of this boutique part of London, and there’s nothing better than stopping for a good bit of food.

Having said that, with these best restaurants, an advance booking is the way forward. It’s not always essential – I don’t mind standing in a small queue sometimes or waiting with a drink at the bar, for the sake of spontaneity. But if you can plan in advance, do so – it means you can make the most of your day in Covent Garden, and shimmer straight to your table for a very decent lunch or evening meal.

One thing’s for sure: dining in Covent Garden is never boring. There’s historic charm, a lively crowd, and so many different foods to try.

If you’re staying in The Big Smoke, you need a hotel that’s calming and comfortable as well as in the middle of all the action. Here, we look at the best hotels in London to keep you central to the action.

Many would agree that London really is the best city in the world. In fact, it once again took No.1 position in the 2025 World’s 100 Best Cities.

No matter your reason for visiting – sightseeing, history, shopping, architecture, nightlife, connectivity, business – London has it all. Here’s a list of the best hotels in London that would tick all the boxes for your next stay.

I spent a few nights at The Royal Horseguards Hotel, which is one of London’s finest when it comes to London’s history. This building used to be the headquarters for Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, it hosted the National Liberal Club, and Sir Winston Churchill was a guest here (followed by many other famous faces since).

My room was modern with some high-quality facilities including a Hypnos bed and fast Wi-Fi, but it still had a Victorian charm to it, too.

This hotel is overlooking the Thames and Whitehall, and you can walk to Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, and the Houses of Parliament in just a few minutes. Charing Cross and Embankment stations are super close if you need to get to other areas of the City.

Dinner at their One Twenty One Two restaurant was definitely worth reserving in advance, and I recommend you try a cocktail in the Equus Bar afterwards.

The hotel hosts meetings, weddings, and conferences, but even if you’re just here for the night you have first-class service from staff, who are friendly and organised. You get a 24-hour concierge and luggage storage, which was a massive help during my visit.

2: The Ritz London

The Ritz is classic elegance from top to bottom, right from the entrance, with staff on hand to help you wherever you go. I did have high expectations of The Ritz, and it lived up to them – the rooms were just as classy. Some, including mine, have views over Piccadilly, so you feel right in the middle of all the City action.

Afternoon Tea here is something everyone should try at least once. I’ve had the pleasure of an Afternoon Tea here before, with beautifully presented sandwiches and pastries – but it was more enjoyable as a hotel guest, leaving your room with no bags etc.

Dining at one of their restaurants was of course amazing, with refined dishes in a gorgeous setting. The Ritz is in Mayfair, so you’re right near many of central London’s landmarks.

3: The Waldorf Hilton

The Waldorf Hilton is another beautiful London building, almost a landmark in its own right, built in 1908. Everything about it is grand, especially the lobby, and it has classic décor throughout.

My room was high-end and comfortable, and even peaceful considering its central location.

I enjoyed a quiet drink at one of the bars which was served professionally, and the restaurant was perfect for a relaxed dinner.

You’re right near Covent Garden here and the West End, so The Waldorf is a great location if you’re going to see a show, or want to be able to walk to lots of quirky shops and dining experiences (or the famous Covent Garden Christmas Tree).

4: The Savoy

The Savoy has been one of the best hotels in London for quite some time – it’s over 135 years old, so it’s full of history and known for its luxury. It sits right on the Strand, so you get easy access to the West End and some incredible views of the Thames.

Rooms are spacious and comfy, and suitable for families too. We stayed with out children who were made very welcome, and they even left them some child-sized slippers and robes! The pool also has special hours just for kids.

Dining scores highly here. It has a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, and the Gallery has classic dishes on the menu, but with fancy twists to them. They have freshly baked Scoff scones at lunchtime, although they go quite quickly (taste one and you’ll see why).

The spa is exceptional here and worth visiting.

5: Rosewood London

Rosewood London has a more modern, subtle design about it compared to other hotels, especially in the rooms – though it still includes some British heritage in its décor. The entrance has grand iron gates, and some of the rooms are rich and dark – I loved the contrast.

My room felt more like a private flat than a hotel. It was quiet, spacious, comfy and smart. And very clean. I barely noticed the city noise outside.

Rosewood is another one close to Covent Garden – a little further out, it takes about 10 minutes to walk there.

The Holborn Dining Room is worth a reservation. Expect classic British dishes in a classy yet relaxed brasserie setting.

Scarfes Bar is a good choice for the evenings as it’s lively and has a fantastic cocktail menu. The Mirror Room’s Art Afternoon Tea is definitely worth checking out if you can – most of it was almost too pretty to eat.

I didn’t get to use their Sense Spa, but the treatments looked very good – I’ll come back and update when I try it out on my next visit.

6: The Kensington Hotel

The Kensington feels, and looks, like a classic London townhouse, but with all the modern comforts I love during a hotel stay. The rooms feel like home, are beautifully airy and fresh, but with a classic taste to all the details. One of my favourite rooms to stay in, in fact.

The same style runs throughout the hotel, and the lobby and lounge areas are great places to relax for a bit. Staff were also particularly professional and friendly here.

Breakfast in their bright restaurant was very good. I squeezed in a spa treatment too, which was worth the time and money.

The location’s a winner if you want to walk to museums and local restaurants. It took me just under 15 minutes to walk to Hyde Park, and the area is very classy.

Location: 109-113 Queen’s Gate, South Kensington, London SW7 5LP, United Kingdom
Contact: +44 20 7589 6300

7: The Langham, London

The Langham opened in 1865, so again there’s a real old-world grandeur feeling about it here. They’ve done a good job of keeping those classic aspects, while adding in some modern additions I think we expect in any luxury hotel.

I had a fantastic French dinner in the restaurant – service was spot-on, and the food tasted fresh and carefully prepared. The hotel pub and bars were lovely, and had a Gatsby feel to them.

My room was quiet, which was surprising considering its location – it only takes about five minutes to walk to a very busy Oxford Street (so if you’re in London for the shopping, this one’s a great choice).

The spa here is very good, and I really loved the indoor pool. It was one of the cleanest I’ve seen.

8: Kimpton Fitzroy London

Kimpton Fitzroy probably stands out the most for its grand architecture. Its classic 19th-century design really stands out from the outside and as you enter the lobby, but it’s also surprisingly modern and comfortable throughout.

My room was spacious and quiet, and much brighter and airier than I thought it would be. The bedding was exceptionally comfortable, and the soundproofing really made a difference.

I especially loved their seafood restaurant, though all their food and drinks were presented with perfection. Their cocktail bar was very creative and I spent longer in here than I’d intended.

In all areas, staff were very helpful and professional, and the hotel and rooms were spotless.

Russell Square is a little further from everything you’d typically want to reach in the City, but a quick 6-minute drive or taxi will get you to the London Eye, the Embankment, and Big Ben.

9: Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London

I’d describe Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park as high-luxury and elegant. Everything seems neat and crisp in here, but with a warmth and lots of modern, bold items like the onyx chandeliers.

I loved my room here – it looked out over Hyde Park, which is one of my favourite spots in London, with a pretty view of the trees. The bathroom had marble flooring which made it feel like a mini spa, and I loved the walk-in shower.

Dining at the hotel was definitely a highlight, with both British and Japanese cuisine available.

The cocktail bar is also brilliant, with lots of new, unusual cocktails even I couldn’t help putting on my socials.

The location is awesome. Staying in Knightsbridge means not only do you have Hyde Park right on your doorstep, you’re also walking distance to Marble Arch, Buckingham Palace, and other shops and landmarks.

The hotel’s indoor pool and spa are also worth a visit, although I personally didn’t get time to check them out.

10: Hilton London Hyde Park

Hilton London Hyde Park opened in 1907, and his one of the most popular hotels in London. It’s close to Hyde Park, and room rates are a lot more affordable than, say, the Mandarin.

The rooms felt modern and comfortable, with quality bedding and solid soundproofing.

Dinner at the hotel’s dining room was very good and fresh, especially the breakfast service. The space felt cosy in the evening.

All staff were polite and efficient. The best thing about this hotel is its location, next to Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, and walking distance to The Albert Hall.

If you’re a fan of Hard Rock Cafe, there’s one just down the road, and you’re close to Bayswater and Queensway tube if you want to see more of the City.

Conclusion

The City of London is an exciting place to be. But where you stay can make all the difference. Where will you need to get to? Do you need to be close to shopping? Or landmarks? Or green space? Or do you want to escape a little further out?

Many of London’s best hotels have been longstanding. The most luxurious offer all the rich history we love London for, plus the comforts and delights of modern décor, dining, and facilities. All these hotels made me proud to call London our Capital. Check them out, and see how London looks to you when you stay.

London is amazing but is also in the Top 10 most expensive cities to live in in the world. Finding things to do that are free helps to keep costs down while exploring this beautiful city. Luckily, there are plenty of free things to do in London from futuristic art installations to amazing rooftop gardens.

Immerse Yourself At Outernet

This immersive experience brings together art, culture and music for the whole family. It is made up of a series of spaces with wrap around screens displaying digital art in many different forms. When we visited there were a range of different art works on display, taking you under the sea, into space or into a field of butterflies. You can enjoy the show from seats that are dotted around or you can lie on the floor, completely forget that you are in central London, and immerse yourself in the world that is being presented on the screens.

We loved taking some time out from walking around sight seeing to relax and let your mind be filled with images from amazing artists.

View London From The Sky Garden

The Sky Garden is London’s highest public garden offering 360 degree views of the city’s skyline amidst the lush greenery of a tropical garden. There are cafes and restaurants, an outdoor terrace and plenty of spots to sit and admire the view.

From the Sky Garden you have views across the Thames towards Tower Bridge (including HMS Belfast), the Shard and in the opposite direction St Paul’s Cathedral. Except for the outdoor terrace, the garden is undercover which means you can visit whatever the weather (very useful in England!)

The Sky Garden is completely free but you do need to book tickets in advance, they are released every Monday 3 weeks in advance, so set that reminder as they go quickly!

The Garden at 120

The Garden at 120 is located at the top of 120 Fenchurch Street above retail outlets, restaurants and some of London’s best hotels. The garden is beautifully designed and offers great views out towards the iconic Gherkin building and the Walkie Talkie building (which is home to The Sky Garden). Unlike the Sky Garden there is no need to book, so great if you haven’t managed to get tickets in advance. You can use their footfall monitor, click here to find out how busy it is right now.

Learn And Be Amazed At The Natural History Museum

The Grade I listed building alone is pretty impressive, not to mention the 80 million specimens which it houses. It takes you through 4.6 billion years of the planet’s history and encourages you to think about its future too.

You will find so many fascinating exhibits from the huge blue whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling to ancient dinosaur bones and other creatures that are now extinct. All of this is absolutely free and there is no need to book, however if you do book you get to skip the queue. Click here to book you tickets in advance.

Appreciate Art At The Tate Modern

The Tate Modern is the largest and most famous modern art gallery in London. It is free to wander round and admire art work from Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, Nan Goldin and Tracey Emin, just to mention a few. It is found on the South Bank, in a striking building that used to house Battersea Power Station and is close to other iconic buildings such as The Globe Theatre.

Lounge In London’s Parks

London has 3000 parks scattered throughout the city. Pack and enjoy a bit of peace away from the busy city. They are also a great place to find free outdoor theatre shows, live music, movie screenings, sports tournaments, festivals and more. Click here to find out what is going on in the Royal Parks of London.

Be Entertained At Covent Garden

Covent Garden is known as a place to go to shop high end brands, eat in one of the upscale restaurants and browse the covered market but if your budget doesn’t stretch to this then it is still worth visiting. You can simply grab yourself a drink and watch the circus like street artists perform death defying acts or chuckle at one of the more light hearted displays.

Watch The Sunset

There are plenty of places that you can watch the sunset in London from trendy rooftop bars and restaurants to rooftop gardens like the Sky Garden. If you want to enjoy watching golden hour in a more relaxed setting, grab a blanket and head to Primrose Hill, Hampstead Heath, Richmond Park or my personal favourite Greenwich Observatory.

Greenwich Observatory sits on top of the hill in Greenwich Park not far from the National Maritime Museum which is also free and has some fascinating exhibitions and lots of interactive activities for children. Book your free visit here.

Take A Walk Down Leake Street

Leake Street tunnel is made up of 8 former railway arches below Waterloo Station and has become the unofficial centre of South London’s graffiti culture. Every inch of space is completely covered with a forever-evolving collection of street art and anybody is free to come and leave their mark on the walls.

A community of independent restaurants and bars have developed in this area so once you are finished watching the masters of graffiti at work you can stop for refreshment nearby.

Wander Around The V & A Museum

The V & A Museum is one of the world’s leading museums of art, design and performance. It is housed in a truly beautiful building with a gorgeous cafe (which is a work of art in itself) and spills out into a lovely courtyard garden. Bliss on a summers day.

The permanent collections at the V & A include architecture, painting, sculpture, fashion, textiles, ceramics and jewellery from around the world. They often host very popular temporary exhibitions such as Christian Dior or Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, so check out their website to find out what the latest exhibitions are.

London’s skyline is a sight to behold, and what better way to take it in than from a rooftop restaurant? I’ve explored the city’s high-altitude dining scene and found some truly spectacular spots. These eateries offer more than just great views – they serve up delicious food and unforgettable experiences.

My list of the 8 best rooftop restaurants in London will help you find the perfect spot for a memorable meal with a view. Whether you’re after a romantic dinner, a lively night out with friends, or a special occasion venue, there’s something for everyone.
1: Garden Rooftop

I recently visited Garden Rooftop, and I must say it’s a hidden gem in the heart of London. Perched atop the Assembly Hotel, this rooftop bar offers stunning views of the city skyline that took my breath away.

The Mediterranean-inspired menu is a treat for the taste buds. I savoured their delicious Italian dishes while sipping on expertly crafted cocktails. The combination of great food and panoramic vistas made for an unforgettable dining experience.

What struck me most was the lively atmosphere. On weekends, they host a ’90s-themed bottomless brunch that’s become quite popular. It’s the perfect spot for a fun outing with friends or a romantic date night.

The staff were attentive and friendly, adding to the overall pleasant ambience. Whether you’re after a casual drink or a full meal, Garden Rooftop caters to all. It’s definitely earned its place as one of London’s top rooftop destinations.

2: 14 Hills

I was blown away by the stunning panoramic views of London’s skyline at 14 Hills, affording views over some of the most iconic London hotels and landmarks. Located on the 14th floor of 120 Fenchurch Street, this rooftop restaurant offers a truly breathtaking dining experience.

The food at 14 Hills is top-notch. I enjoyed every bite of my sea bream with fennel and orange. The flavours were fresh and balanced, perfectly complementing the restaurant’s airy ambiance. The cocktail menu is also worth exploring, with creative concoctions that showcase the bartenders’ skills.

The interior is just as impressive as the views. Lush greenery and elegant décor create a garden-like atmosphere that feels like an oasis above the city. I loved how the plants and trees seamlessly blended with the sleek, modern design.

Service was attentive and knowledgeable, adding to the overall premium feel of the restaurant. While it’s on the pricier side, I think the combination of excellent food, drinks, and unbeatable views make 14 Hills a must-visit spot for a special night out in London.

There is also the added bonus of The Garden at 120 being on the next floor up. This is free to access but you do have to queue unless you have booked at 14 Hills Restaurant. We took advantage of this and wandered upstairs for sunset and it was truly stunning!

3: The Rooftop

I recently visited The Rooftop at the Trafalgar St. James hotel, and I was blown away by the views of London’s skyline. Situated on the 7th floor, this stylish venue offers a breathtaking panorama of iconic landmarks like Nelson’s Column and the London Eye.

The atmosphere is chic and sophisticated, with a mix of indoor and outdoor seating. I loved the plush sofas and cosy fire pits that keep guests warm on cooler evenings. The cocktail menu is impressive, featuring creative drinks that perfectly complement the luxurious setting.

For dinner, I tried their small plates menu, which showcases a variety of flavours. The grilled octopus was tender and perfectly seasoned, while the truffle arancini were delightfully crispy. The attentive staff were knowledgeable about the menu and happy to offer recommendations.

I’d recommend booking in advance, especially for sunset, as it’s a popular spot. Whether you’re after a romantic evening or a night out with friends, The Rooftop is a must-visit destination in London’s vibrant dining scene.

4: Aviary

Found at the top of the Royal London House, Aviary offers a stunning rooftop experience that’s hard to beat. I was immediately struck by the panoramic views of London’s skyline, which provide a breathtaking backdrop for any meal or drink.

The seasonal menu at Aviary is a treat for the taste buds. Their perfectly cooked dishes showcase the best of British cuisine with a modern twist. The cocktails are equally impressive, crafted with precision and flair by skilled mixologists.

One standout feature is the igloo seating area. These cosy, transparent domes offer a unique dining experience, especially magical during the cooler months. It’s a perfect spot for a romantic dinner or a special celebration with friends.

5: Sky Garden

I was blown away by Sky Garden, London’s highest public garden. Located at the top of a skyscraper, it offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the city skyline. The lush greenery and tropical plants create a stunning contrast against the urban landscape.

The space is incredibly versatile. During the day, it’s perfect for a relaxing stroll or a casual coffee. As night falls, it transforms into a vibrant spot for drinks and dinner. I loved sipping cocktails at the bar while watching the sunset over London’s iconic landmarks.

The menu at Madison is a delightful mix of American-inspired dishes. I tucked into a perfectly grilled steak that rivalled some of the best I’ve had in New York and the cocktail list is equally impressive.

The atmosphere here is electric, especially during their Sundown Sessions. Live DJs and musicians keep the energy high, making it a top spot for after-work drinks or a night out with friends. I particularly enjoyed their Aperol Spritz menu, a refreshing choice for summer evenings.

7: SUSHISAMBA London

I’ve been to many rooftop restaurants, but SUSHISAMBA London truly stands out. Found at the top of the Heron Tower on the 38th and 39th floors, it offers unrivalled views of the city skyline.

As I stepped out of the panoramic glass lift, I was immediately struck by the 360-degree vistas. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the main dining room bring the London skyline right to your table.

The menu is a unique fusion of Japanese, Brazilian, and Peruvian cuisines. I enjoyed their signature sushi rolls and robata-grilled meats, all while watching the sunset over St. Paul’s Cathedral.

8: London Bridge Rooftop Bar

I’ve found a hidden gem in the heart of London. The London Bridge Rooftop Bar offers a unique outdoor experience with stunning views of the city skyline. It’s just a stone’s throw from The Shard, making it an ideal spot for a night out.

As I stepped onto the rooftop, I was greeted by a lively atmosphere. The fully covered venue means you can enjoy it rain or shine. You will appreciate the heaters, which keep you cosy even on a chilly evening.

Dining Options

London’s rooftop restaurants offer an impressive array of culinary delights. From innovative fusion dishes to classic British fare, these sky-high eateries cater to diverse palates and preferences.

Cuisine Variety

The rooftop dining scene in London boasts a rich tapestry of flavours. I’ve sampled everything from modern British cuisine to exotic Asian fusion.

Many venues feature seasonal menus that showcase locally-sourced ingredients. For instance, some restaurants offer farm-to-table concepts. They partner with nearby producers to ensure freshness.

International cuisines are well-represented too. I’ve enjoyed authentic Italian pasta dishes, spicy Indian curries, and delicate Japanese sushi, all while taking in panoramic views of the city.

Some spots even blend culinary traditions, creating unique fusion dishes that reflect London’s multicultural essence.

Vegetarian and vegan options are increasingly common. I’ve noticed several rooftop restaurants now offer dedicated plant-based menus, catering to the growing demand for meat-free dining experiences.

Signature Dishes

Each rooftop restaurant in London prides itself on its unique culinary offerings. I’ve tasted some truly memorable dishes that have become synonymous with their respective venues.

One place serves a mouthwatering truffle-infused risotto that perfectly balances earthy and creamy flavours. Another is famous for its deconstructed Eton mess, a playful take on the classic British dessert.

Seafood lovers are in for a treat at several spots. I’ve savoured expertly prepared oysters, lobster thermidor, and grilled octopus, all complemented by stunning city views.

For meat enthusiasts, I’ve encountered perfectly cooked steaks and innovative game dishes that showcase British culinary traditions.

Cocktail pairings are often a highlight, with mixologists crafting bespoke drinks to complement the food. I’ve sipped on gin-based concoctions infused with locally foraged botanicals, adding an extra layer of flavour to the dining experience.

Tips For Visiting

I’ve picked up some handy tips for making the most of your rooftop dining experience in London. Here’s what you need to know about timing and dress codes to ensure a brilliant evening out.

Best Times To Visit

For the best rooftop dining experience in London, I recommend visiting between May and September. The weather is typically warmer and drier, perfect for outdoor seating.

Weekdays tend to be less crowded, especially if you fancy an early dinner around 6 pm.

Sunset hours are magical on London’s rooftops. In summer, that’s usually between 8 pm and 9:30 pm. It’s worth checking sunset times in advance and booking accordingly.

Bank holidays can be tricky. Restaurants are often packed, so book well ahead if you’re planning a visit on these days.

Dress Code

Most rooftop restaurants in London have a smart-casual dress code.

Some high-end spots might require more formal attire. You should check the restaurant’s website or give them a ring if you’re unsure.

Remember to bring a light jacket or wrap, even in summer. London evenings can get chilly, especially when you’re dining al fresco.
